Stuart and Skeeter were doomed from the start. They meet, they hate each other, then they turn around and start dating, then he calls her selfish and leaves once she publishes The Help, which practically means he has the same views as Hilly or he's just scared of what'll happen to his reputation if he stays with her after that. Either way, they were doomed from the start.

hmm I think initially they were kinda okay for each other. I mean, he seems like one of those guys who actually like girls like her. She matches him in wit. The problem with him would be that he lacks spine, or rather, he's a man of his time. and skeeter was a woman of another.

He wasn't supportive of her writing the book, "The Help". I relate to Emma Stone's character because she likes to write & she treats everyone as equals. No one is beneath or subordinate to her. She treats people with compassion, patience, & she truly cares to listen to them & their experiences. My sis & I loved this film!

Did that guy call Skeeter a gold digger? "Professional husband hunting" ?
@lexi7749
@lexi7749 3 года назад
In the 60s women pretty much needed a husband as it was rare (and looked down upon) to be single and financially independent. So husband hunting was what women needed to do to have a stable life. So rather than a gold digger, I think he was just pointing out she might be desperate for a husband in general
@CandyPinkcake
@CandyPinkcake 3 года назад
It was basically their job back then so it wasn’t like gold digging. They had to look for a husband to survive
@JJ-yn4cj
@JJ-yn4cj 2 года назад
Most women chose to stay home - they have actually always had a choice. There were female doctors before women had the right to vote, parity in college education was achieved the first time between men and women in the 20's (although only among the wealthy), and even middle class women could be homemakers for hire for rich families. The only thing was while men were expected to use their money for their own financial independence and to support their wife/ex-wife/kids/and any and all unmarried female relatives, women who choose to work got to keep everything they made to spend on whatever they wanted. In the 60s, with the end of a major war, middle class men finally got the opportunity to go to college as well as a few middle class women due to the GI bill - primarily awarded to men because of the draft. Feminists complained about 'male privilege' and got middle class women not previously enlisted in the war to attend as well. Sure, the guy was an ass - but in the context of actual history: men were expected to financially provide for everyone while women weren't expected to financially provide for anyone so it kinda made sense when guys acted this way back then. Now, of course, women are actually expected to pay for themselves as a grown adult so it is going to be seen as offensive nowadays.
@Jocelyn_Jade
@Jocelyn_Jade 2 года назад
@@JJ-yn4cj Nope. You’re undervaluing the work women had put into the household. The man provided finances while the woman worked day and night to care for the house, him, and his kids. “Sure, he was an ass, but-“ Yeah, he was an ass. Period. It did not make sense for a man to “act this way,” as a woman was providing just as much as he was, if not more. Your tone is as though she was able to freeload off his work and do whatever she wanted. 😂 You obviously do not appreciate homemaking, nor a woman’s work. It was technically a trade off, an agreement, a give-and-take. The man’s finances for the woman’s labor. But the patriarchal society taught that men were dominant and superior thanks to the marketing strategies of the 1950s. Yes, all of the nuclear family, men being dominant and woman self objectifying, was all thanks to marketing and not some pseudo sociological natural order. In the Victorian times it was about extended family. Social structures and times constantly change. Women did not have as much of a choice as you’re saying. A woman could be a teacher, wife, nurse, or secretary. Let’s be real here. Not all men let the woman spend their money. Women were not even allowed to own bank accounts until the 1970s. And if she was able to spend “his” money? I’d say she earned it since she had to put him out the door and get him ready for work every day, work all day, and continue working when he got home and he gets to relax. Remember that. 💋✨
@XenaWarrior-m8f
@XenaWarrior-m8f 8 дней назад
@@Jocelyn_JadeI agree, although our times are much more different, I think others fail to realize that. I like to think we have it easy. Because imagine working from 5:30 in the morning to make breakfast, dress the husband, then get kids ready for school drop them off only to come back home to a mess made from the morning . After that you socialize with the wives of the corporate the husband is working at to keep a good reputation for him( which honestly can be draining emotionally and mentally.) Making sure the house was clean by the time the husband came home which would be around 6:30pm to sometimes 8. And even then you had to make sure your family were fed. (People don’t realize that cooking also takes a lot of work.) And if your husband got home late it was expected of you stay up until your husband got home just so you can heat up his plate and then cleanup after him. Only to go to bed after him just to see him reading a book or some document from work relaxing. FYI men today are more aware but back then they chose to be ignorant because of their surroundings. Men today have much more awareness.

A man just randomly so disrespectful in the beginning with anyone is just no good. There is no justification for communicating like that - bad mood, alcohol. I have not seen a decent man doing those things. Of course they were doomed and in real life anyone else would be doomed as well being in a relationship with a manipulating narcissist, who does not really care about your feelings will not lead you to happiness but only into a toxic, vile connection.

@@Sarah-yy6hv omg touch grass and relax. It’s the wittiness that’s funny, the way he delivered the joke in a clever manner. Insults, when told as a joke, are sometimes hilarious when they’re meant in good spirit. Take life with a better attitude and take jokes on your person every once in a while because it’s healthy to laugh at yourself. Clearly in this situation, they’re throwing insults at each other and is mutual. His intention is not to offend her, since he really likes her. No one’s hurt in this scene, no one’s dying, and no one is traumatised. It’s a joke. Just laugh. And anyway, the joke being demeaning, offensive, or hurtful doesn’t take away from the fact that the joke is funny. That’s why dark humour exists in this world, and it doesn’t work for everyone and that’s fine. You don’t have to laugh at anything you don’t want to, but I’d appreciate it if you didn’t throw insinuations at me cause I think a line from a movie is funny and you don’t.

That's how men where those days - obnoxiously sexist and patronizing. Ugh! Skeeter had so much more than that limiting role which Hilly filled. I'm so glad she dished it out to her date that night. A good verbal punch. At last, someone with integrity and dignity!

As a curly haired woman, who was born and raised in Australia from Italian parents, this cultural bias which considers curly hair as unattractive and inappropriate had me denying and straightening my hair for at least 20 years. When I went to live in Italy, and had some lady friends over my house, they accidentally noticed my curly hair after I had washed it. They were deeply surprised. One of them asked me 'is that your natural hair'? I nodded, somewhat embarrassed. After which, game changingly, she added 'but it's beautiful'! From then on, I never straightened my hair again, leaving it plush, curly and long. Skeeter looked much prettier with her natural curly hair. Prettier, fresher, more authentic.

Simple point; I doubt, seriously, they had upscale 'knockoff' Huaraches, those "Mexican" shoes, back in the '60s. I know because I not only have upscale 'knockoff' Huaraches in the closet, arguably my favorite casual dress show in the closet, but I wore Huaraches when I was a kid, tire sole and all, we purchased in Mexico back in the '60s and outside those that traveled to NW Mexico, my Father maintained a residence outside a small town called 'Cebollas,' yes, Onions, just 30 miles South of Ensenada, or lived near a border town no one knew what they were. CONTINUITY... That's the person you see in the credits responsible for these trivia, minutiae or details. If it such an important plot point as to need a 'single shot,' and such a clumsy edit, then GET IT RIGHT.
