Nowadays there still are immigrant mothers who take care of strangers's kids, while their own kids are growing up without the presence of their mother.

Why Viola Davis is so amazing. She starts to say, "It feel...." and then stops talking. But we can hear her loud and clear.

How Viola Davis didn't win the Best Actress Oscar in 2011 is a mystery to me. She leads this film strong, and gives a real voice to those who were voiceless in that time. I think people misconstrue this film so much because they only see the role, they don't see the context of the role that makes it challenging. Viola Davis' character and Octavia Spencer's character are able to say what no actresses of color playing maids in films could say of the society they were in, and told the story honestly where the romance was stripped away for hard truth. This was the best performance by a lead actress in 2011, not that cheap SNL impersonation of Margaret Thatcher Meryl Streep did in Iron Lady.

“It feels...” “Nobody ever asked what it feels like to be me”

I try to tell people when I can if I like their shirt or if I like some kind of piece of clothing they are wearing. I think to myself they spent so much time trying to pick something out in the morning. The least I can do is appreciate it. It makes them smile from ear to ear and they feel that they matter. Abileen looked great.

Viola Davis is just......wow......her portrayal just wrecked my heart

Its so amazing to watch how these women bond over their own demons and struggles that the other does not possess. Different races, different upbringing, different reasons. Still they share common ground and help one another cope. Much like Minnie and Celia.

I read the book and I have seen the movie. Both are really good, but the book really goes into detail about how racist and dangerous it was in Jackson, MS at the time for people like Skeeter to help black people like Minnie and Aibileen. The author of the book was actually born and raised in Jackson so you know that you are getting actual facts about what things were like back then instead of getting opinions from unreliable sources. Like other commenters have mentioned, I can watch this movie over and over again and never get tired of it. Very powerful message and life lessons

I was kept by a black young woman when I was age 3-5. Then we moved to a farm and my brother was adopted and we were kept by a black woman. Her name was Alice. I liked both of them. My mother was physically and verbally abusive so it made me appreciate their kindness. Having the experience of being fed and kept by them ended up with me not growing up with the prejudice and racism around me in the south.

Such an amazing film and book. Viola Davis is outstanding.

Not even up-to-date staff are allowed to use owner's bathrooms.... and immigrant mothers look after their children while their own are left with friends or sisters.... Little has changed

I love this movie so much. I'm confused about one thing though. Aibileen makes $182 a month and Skeeter makes $32 a month at the Jackson journal. How is that possible? Can anyone explain please.

Im Native American, and i always tear up watching this movie. I can feel the pain, the pain of not having white skin. The way they stare, the way they judge. The way they think of us. I never did no wrong before in my life. Yet im still a disgusting dirty native to some :( this movie hits hard when you can relate.

That’s a big house for a maid

It's a reflection of all those working away to work in another country and leave families behind. Taking care of other children whilst leaving their own behind to earn a living. It is heart breaking when these children grow up not knowing the parent well and sometimes treat their parent with indifference when coming home, not recognizing the sacrifice... It is sad but that's one of the truths that happens.

I for one really enjoyed this movie, i actually felt nothing but guilt for people in those days that were black, and being made to work,. Even the scene when Aibileen was asked if she dreams of being something else, just the thought of no black person having a choice of what they want to do and unfortunately we still live in a society where people from different races don't feel valued, like there lifes dont matter by the way they get treated is disgraceful. People need to be more accepting and open minded of others especially with what is going on in America we are all the same to Quote Annalise Keating from(HTGAWM) 'rascim is built into the DNA of America'

No she should have won..many Americans felt this way. But the standards are still there for certain actors I feel. This movie had a powerful voice and made certain states in this country still acting this way towards ack people. I had family members in in my family who were domestic help in the Northern States who were white and treated nasty. Economic status has a huge problem everywhere with certain characteristics in upperty people who act this way.But the south even after the civil war didn’t change much around thinking “All men were created equal, “and so were women…🇺🇸‼️

This doesn't only happen to African housekeepers. Even elite working mothers are sailing in the same boat as the African housekeepers shown in this movie regardless of their race especially teachers, doctors and nurses. Most of the time their kids are in day care centre but at workplace, they take care of other people's kids. So, there is nothing to feel bad about it.

It’s hard for anyone who grows up with racist bigoted parents because the expectation is to be just like them. Defying a racist parent is just as bad today believe me. Racism is taught. No one is born with it. I love this movie because it show cases the truth that African Americans and people of color have gone through and continue to go through. It’s sad but true. Unfortunately.

Today, every working mother has her child looked after by someone else. Does that make them a tragic figure? Because, the feminists keep telling us that she is doing what a woman should be doing.
