If you put fat grips around the barbell around the edges where it touched the rack, that’d probably be enough to keep it from scratching and you wouldn’t have to setup the J cups each time.

Could you use Fat Gripz (or something similar) on your barbell instead of purchasing an extra tall set of j-cups to protect your uprights and bar? This seems a lot more cost effective. I don't know how much the bar tends to shift from side to side in relation to the rack but even if you had to buy 2 pairs of Fat Grips (and of course you could get different diameters for versatility elsewhere), it would still be more cost effective than a new set of j-cups, especially that tall.
@TheKurtlocker
@TheKurtlocker 2 года назад
The fat grips would work well. To be clear, this isn’t an extra set of cups. This is my one pair. I just move them. The bar can move side to side if you don’t control the movement and that is part of what makes them better for overall strength than lever arms IMO.

Great video Kurt! Appreciate all the reviews you do in helping me build my home gym. A great diy budget friendly alternative that I've been using are the BearButt Kodiak straps (meant for hammocks)... the loops fit olympic barbells and have 1000lb weight capacity... best part only $20 on amazon. Only thing you need to add is carabiners and attachment points (I used hitch pins). Then if I'm using as a suspension trainer, I attach D handles

In place of the J-cups to protect the face of your rack, you can use a 3"x8" piece of UHMW, or similar material screwed to the endface of a 1" wood dowel inserted into the uprights and held in place with a hitch pin inserted into a cross drilled hole in the dowel. Inexpensive and easy to locate with the 8", or longer length. Alternatively, you can use a piece 1/2" or 3/4" rubber mat in place of the UHMW to absorb and dampen the noise and vibration of the bar hitting the rack.

Now, you know this product better than me so correct me if I’m wrong but it seems like you should insert the pins 90 degrees from the way you did in the video. So instead of both ends of the peg pointing toward the rear of the rack, they are pointing to either side of you, That way the actual peg is experiencing most of the shear forces when moving horizontally instead of the cotter pin. Either way great video. Definitely gonna grab me one of these.
@TheKurtlocker
@TheKurtlocker 6 месяцев назад
I’ve played with setting it up both ways. The way that is recommended is the way I have it in the video. I fear putting it 90 degrees to the side puts a lot of shear force on the weld between the eyelet for the carabiner and the shaft.

Thanks for the review. Saw you doing hack squats with this on your IG and that made me instantly intrigued about this attachment. I'm doing a hypertrophy program with tons of volume, and leg days really kill me as it is hard to hit legs in a basic home gym without using some very fatiguing axially loaded exercises ... deadlifts, barbell squats, etc. Most home gyms do not have access to leg press and hack squat machines. I really like the idea of using this for hack squats and leg presses to help take the load off the spine, as there is only so much squat and deadlift volume I can take.

I think a bar smashing into a power rack potentially damaging the rack or the bar is more than just an esthetic thing, that would be a functional thing. Good video overall.
@TheKurtlocker
@TheKurtlocker 11 месяцев назад
It normally doesn’t crash into the rack. Ideally the athlete controls the load. I rarely see it crash
@harryc8651
@harryc8651 2 года назад
This looks great! If it is long enough I can see myself doing seated rows by setting it up inside the rack for clearance and pulling on the barbell lengthwise. Since it has levers on both ends it would stay parallel to the ground, and you could use the base to support your feet. Kinda janky but could work for someone like me who doesn’t have a low pulley setup. Not a lot different from what you showed but it would stop the bar from hitting the posts and eliminates tilting that could occur from any asymmetrical loading or not having the handle placed exactly in the middle

How does the leg press feel on this compared to a real leg press machine. Is it easier because of the arc the henny makes when legs are fully extended.
@TheKurtlocker
@TheKurtlocker 7 месяцев назад
The ability to load a heavy leg press is very difficult because it is essentially a horizontal push. Compared to a traditional leg press I’d say that the Henny is not capable of loading to a load significant enough to produce a similar stimulus.
