Welcome back for another Game of Thrones and ASOIAF Theory video. This was actually confirmed in the show, but many people still believe otherwise when it comes to the books. I am of course talking about Jon Snow's true identity. He is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, which makes Jon Snow the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. The clues that support this in the books are very easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking for. Now that I've read them again, I was able to find some pretty good ones in my opinion. This video contains over 20 quotes that I believe point to Jon Snow being the King of the Seven Kingdoms. Keep in mind, they are very subjective clues. Let me know how you feel about them. Do you agree that these quotes link Jon to Rhaegar and Lyanna? Leave me some comments and questions down below. Thank you for watching!

I now get the impression that Ned was talking about Jon Snow when he said that "you can't get your hands on this one". He knew that Robert could get to Dany if he tried long enough, but he would never get Jon because it was a secret he would take to the grave.

Ned says it with a lot of meaning like he would fight till the death to protect him. Ned must of loved Jon very much as as much as a parent loves and protects his child.

Simplest explanation is usually correct. Based on the context of the conversation, he was talking about Dany.

“.. An Aegon not an egg. Kill the boy and let the man be born” one of my fav quotes. Good work dawg .. oh an another one.. when Ned is talking to Cersei in AGOT she asks him if he loves his kids... he thinks about Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon.. not Jon. Omitting Jon was crucial. At least for me.

The below always struck me as interesting, and it’s also very ironic, because of course Jon looks more like his mother than his father “The boy absorbed all that in silence. He had the Stark face if not the name: long, solemn, guarded, a face that gave nothing away. Whoever his mother had been, she had left little of herself in her son." -Tyrion, A Game of Thrones

Completely off topic, but I consider Ned Stark to be a true hero of Westeros. He fought a war knowing his brother and father had been murdered, he kept his silence about the death of Arthur Dayne, to protect his sister and her child. Everything we learnt after his death only, in my opinion heightens his status. We know the war was Roberts rage and Targaryen madness. We know that Baelish was the chief conspirator behind the wolves and lions fighting. Yet he still kept his knowledge quiet regarding his sisters child. He betrayed his friend, who would have killed the child. He betrayed his wife whom resented his bastard. He betrayed his family bringing in a bastard. Took the shame in kingslanding. He was stoic in the face of his death sentence, stoic in the face of betrayal in the capital. With what we now know, Ned Starks act of selflessness is a true testimony to the endurance of House Stark.

Some of these I noticed too. The more you read the books the more clues you find. Martin is a genius! Would be a tragedy if Jon never finds out who he is. It's my greatest fear. I know he won't want the throne, that's not him, but he needs to know who he is and to appriciate what Ned did to protect him. I always feel sad when I think of Jon. He, more than anyone, needs a happy ending.

+Helena Kylyvnyk It is the duty of the Kingsguard to guard the royal family. With the most beloved Targaryen heading into battle, the heir to the throne, their place should have been with Rhaegar. The Kingsguard wouldn't have given their lives for their prince's paramour while he went off to an actual battle just because he asked them to. The Kingsguard's presence at the Tower of Joy is another clue though.
@Richard_Nickerson

Also, Jon was not king the day he was born. His grandfather was king, and his father was the heir apparent
@alyssaw750
@alyssaw750 6 лет назад
Actually I think at the time of Jon's birth, both his Targaryen grandfather and father had been killed so yes he was born a king!
@Richard_Nickerson
@Richard_Nickerson 6 лет назад
@@alyssaw750 I just went back and read that bit for confirmation. In the books, Ned does not arrive until after Rhaegar and Aerys have been killed, in that order. In the show, it's not made clear the order of things. They cut all the dialogue between Ned and the Kingsguard except for the last two lines between Ned and Ser Arthur. It seems canon in the show that Ned was not present for either the Trident or King's Landing, so where this falls on the timeline is left quite vague. In the books, Jon was born after the deaths of Aerys and Rhaegar, but Viserys would technically have been king as the next living male in the line at the moments of death for Rhaegar, Aerys, and Aegon. If Ned arrived after the birth but before Lyanna died, then Jon was still in utero when the other Targaryens died, so Viserys should have been king. As Rhaegar's son, Jon has the better claim, but he wouldn't have been considered alive and eligible for the crown yet until he was physically born.

I would like to point out that Jon is actually just as much Stark as he is Targaryen---50%, so those are just as much his ancestors as they are Bran's, or any of the other Stark children (who are 50% Tully) and has as much right to be in the crypt as any of them.

I haven't read the books but found this video fascinating. One of my favorites (and what sealed it for me) in the show was the end of S5/beginning of S6 when Jon was on his back in the snow after being stabbed. The blood pools into the shape of a wolf and then transforms into a dragon before it stops completely. It was subtle but once you see it, it's obvious. Thanks for the great video!

Great video! I think the show did one about Rhaegar and Jon similarities when in season 7 episode 3 I believe, Daenerys was talking to Jon about letting him have the dragon glass and he said Tyrion loves to talk and she said people like to do what their good at and Jon said that he doesn't referencing killing people and in Season 4 Barriston Selmy told her Rhaegar was an excellent swordsman but didn't like killing too. Yes, the books and the show have plenty of foreshadowing showing Jon is the true heir and son of Rhaegar and Lyanna

TT - sometime take a look at Joseph Campbell’s work called “The hero’s journey” ...just like King Arthur, Jon Snow is raised as a low-born, he is unaware of his greatness, he fights for those who cannot fight for themselves, he is betrayed by a friend, and goes on a great journey and discovers who he truly is. This is the age-old story, told many times and through many tales. Campbell states, “We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” Jon’s rebirth

These are all very good, but you missed my favorite..... Early in Game of Thrones, they are still @ Winterfell, Robb, Joffrey, Bran, & Tomen are in the yard and we’re sparring . Jon isn’t and when Arya sits with him asks why he’s not he a half smile and says “bastards are not allowed to damage young princes”. Joffrey is the true bastard and Jon obviously isn’t. This in Arya’s 1st chapter.
@prof.cecilycogsworth3204
@prof.cecilycogsworth3204 6 лет назад
Dunno. Later Joffrey abuses and damages Sansa, a princess. We know Sansa is a princess because later Arya is called a princess by a Frey. " Elmar could be friendly when he needed help, but afterward he would always remember that he was a squire and she was only a serving girl. He liked to boast how he was the son of the Lord of the Crossing, not a nephew or a bastard or a grandson but a trueborn son, and on account of that he was going to marry a princess." Although she doesn't know it, Arya is betrothed to Elmar, through the negociations of her mother with Lord Frey to get KIng Robb the river crossing he needed.

??
@foxb6756
@foxb6756 6 лет назад
That is because she is Robb's sister, who had been named King of the North at the time her Mother made those negotiations. Not because she was born a princess. The Starks aren't royalty (though some of their ancestors were). Sansa & Arya are not actually princesses, they were only considered such in the North during the time that Robb had been elected King. After his death, such a status designation would be worthless and mean nothing.

Jon already is heir to a thrown, per Rob's letter. But Aemon definitely doesn't know about Jon, considering how he nearly cried not being able to be there for Dany and mourning a Targaryen alone in the world.
@brucemercer7753
@brucemercer7753 5 лет назад
But Aemon is Maester of Ravens at Castle Black and En communicato with the 3 Eyed Raven who IS a Targaryen and has the ability to see ALL like he was teaching Bran to do. The 3 Eyed Raven would know and he would communicate to Aemon through the Ravens if not be other means. As 3 of the few SECRET Targaryens left in the World. When Aemon is mourning Targaryens alone in the world he mourns HIMSELF and Dany and he mourns how soon Jon will be alone because Aemon knows Jon is Targaryen and Aemon knows that HE is soon to die. If the 3 Eyed Raven was to share ANY secrets he knew with the outside world it would be Aemon who would know them. The next most likely to know the secrets of the 3 Eyed Raven perhaps Varys... why is his head shaved? Maybe to hide WHITE HAIR? Yeah. I know he says he is a from Esos. But anyone driven from Westoros to Esos could technically clam he has COME FROM Esos once he is back in Westoros.

The mastermind GRRM puts out the work early and through either genius or one lucky gambler, he sits back for years to put the last dot on paper. During those years that he is "not writing", he is monitoring works such as this, after all why should he habe to do all the work while you and your peers speculations do the real writing for him, all he has to do now is put together a compilation and convert it all into written form! What a m-fing Littlefinger like move and absolutely brilliant!

Another thing that always baffled me was Lyanna's statue in the crypts, in a place were all Starks were buried but statues were only for "Lords and Kings" (obviously no previous female had ever had a statue). We are told that Ned loved his siblings so much that he had statues scarved for them too. So, none of the previous Starks in millenia loved their mothers, sisters, daughters?? That is utter nonsense. Ned made a statue for Lyanna because he wanted to honor her in some way, in the only way he could, given the secret he had to keep, it has to be a hidden, buried, out of sight honor... that statue in a place where only "Lords and Kings" had statues, is saying that Lyanna died a Queen Mother, after giving birth to the king. And obviously, when Ned found her in the Tower of Joy, the Kingsguards were there doing their duty, that is, guarding the king.
@Richard_Nickerson
@Richard_Nickerson 6 лет назад
But Brandon wasn't a king or a lord. I don't know whether Lord Rickard or Brandon died first, but Brandon wasn't considered a lord. And certainly not a king. Tradition like that most certainly takes precedence over personal feelings. And all the Kings of Winter have statues, but none of their Queens do. You're trying too hard. Ned was just completely torn by King Aerys and Robert's Rebellion. His whole life changed a whole lot when King Aerys decided to murder his father and brother. He's seen as reflecting on the past and being haunted by it. He helped start a huge civil war because he loved his family, why can't his love for them be enough reason to bury them differently than tradition dictates?

Jon was king at the wall, king at Winterfell and he will (and should) be king of the seven Kingdoms (as Davos said, not because of his birthright) because he will also be chosen by people who believe in him.

I can definitely see the symbolism in that line in Jon's first chapter. Rhaegar is obviously represented in the harpist and the beautiful ballad probably represents the love between lyanna and rhaegar. Jon is too far away to hear the words, symbolizing that he is too far away from the truth of his parentage, even though he is close enough to hear something (as Ned's bastard). It is a very symbolic sentence. Good catch.

In a Dance With Dragons we get another reference to Jon Snow being the King. He finds himself in bed with Mormont's raven pecking at his chest. It calls him Snow. As Jon dresses, the raven keeps some distance from him and mutters from the other side of the room. He recognizes some familiar words: Corn, King, Snow. Then the raven twice calls him by full name: Jon Snow. Jon finds this peculiar as he cannot remember any previous instance of the raven using his full name.

But in the tv show when Ned is writing down Robert's last will, Ned changes the heir to the throne from Geoffrey to the next legitimate heir. I think that was Ned's way of trying to make Jon king. I might be wrong, but I have never seen anyone include that in any video.

I've recently finished the first book and I can agree with this theory because the black cat actually belonged to rhaegar's daughter, Rhaenys, who was killed by the mountain and she named it balerion (page 613 Eddard chapter)

I do think Aemon knew about Jon. He was in touch with Rhaegar. I think Rhaegar and Lyanna knew what would happen. Rhaegar's songs were about the visions from the woods witch. And these songs made lyanna cry for a reason. She knows what will happen thats why she wanted to be buried in the crypts with the other sleepers. I think they knew.

Nice! GRRM is such a poetic writer & uses the same symbolism over & over to create narrative symmetry so it's very difficult to know if certain things are actual word clues & done deliberately or a happy side effect of his natural writing process. But, in this case, I think you are definitely correct. There's too many incidents for it to not be intentional on the author's part. Whether it's a misdirection or not is another story & I guess we will all find out in the upcoming books. Great video,I didn't even catch those references in book 1. I've seen some other people use these examples you've shown here about Jon being King as evidence against him being the Prince Who Was Promised. The logic being Jon was born a king, not a prince, since Rhaegar was dead at the time of his birth. I'm not convinced that The Last Hero, Azor Ahai & The Prince/Princess Who Was Promised are all the same person, or necessarily reside within one single individual.

The subtle clues to Jons true purpose are similar to those in the Lord of the Rings.GRRM is influenced by Tolken and many times in his story he quotes things that describe a King all of which are possessed by Aragorn the true king! For example the hands of a king are the hands of a healer and the use of "kings foil" do cure the Nazgul poison

I havnt read the books,. I am getting to know a bit from listening to others. It seems that the hints and foreshadowing is a huge part of GRRM's story telling style. You found his hints. I think they are obvious once you explain. I would need that explanation but book fans should see it right away once you point the out. Very nice. I really enjoyed this one.

Wonderful. There a plenty more clues to find in the books. To name a few, all from the first book: Bran is foreshadowing Jon's death in one of his dreams: "Finally he looked north. He saw the wall shining like blue crystal, and his bastard brother Jon sleeping alone in a cold bed, his skin growing pale and hard as the memory of all warmth fled from him." And there's this creepy one, from Jon to Arya: "When the spring thaw comes, they will find your body with a needle still locked tight between your frozen fingers." I am afraid this might foreshadow Arya dying in the battle against the Night King. What do you think? My favorite clues concern the possibility of Tyrion being a Targaryen, which wouldn't be far fetched, since Aerys at some point either raped or seduced his mother Joanna Lannister. Moreover the dragons allowed for him to unchain them. Apart from his 'morbid fascination' with dragons, the first chapters of the first book hold these clues: Jon's first chapter ends like this this, with Tyrion saying: ""Remember this, boy. All dwarfs may be bastards, yet not all bastards need be dwarfs." And with that he turned and sauntered back into the feast, whistling a tune. When he openen the door, the light form within threw his shadow clear across the yard, and for just a moment Tyrion Lannister stood tall as a king." Later, when Tyrion meets Maester Aemon at the wall, Aemon says this: ""Oh, I think that Lord Tyrion is quite a large man," Maester Aemon said from the far end of the table. ... "I think he is a giant come among us, here at the end of the world." There are many more.

I’ve also always thought Tyrion was a Targaryen. Several times Tywin remarks “you’re no son of mine” or “I could never prove it” about Tyrion not being his son, then Tyrion being able to walk right up to the dragons and set them free with being roasted alive. Just made me wonder.

Actually the story does say she was the only child,so did Baels child then become Lord of Winterfell? the parallel there is astoundingly obvious (though Jon is destined to become much more then just Lord of Winterfell as his father was more then just "Lord") yet so well hidden in a seemingly casual bit of dialogue that felt more like history building then prophecy

Who was it that lead the Wildlings under the wall? Didn't Ygritt tell Jon that story as well ? I still think Jon is going to lead his people through the Crypts to escape the dead ,I think the Crypts are warded much like under the Greenseers heart tree i.e. Where Jon takes them , the dead CAN'T follow .At one point I thoght Jon would lead them to the Night Fort through the crypts ,then I thought maybe to the Brotherhoods cave as it's near the Godseye ,now I'm not so sure though I do think they'll escape through the crypts ,at least I have time to read the books again before we find out lol

I think George has a way of flipping good to bad and vice-versa. My prediction is the Knight King is a “good” reincarnation of a Stark, or maybe he is Rhaegar after his death aquiring Stark Worg power from Lyanna, or even a future version of Jon himself. This Good Force is sent to squash the “Mad” obsessed Daenerys who has gone crazy via R'hllor who possesses her.

Only thing I keep thinking about is when Daenerys says, "fire cannot kill a dragon," and she is unharmed by fire or even too hot of a bath. But when Jon grabbed the flame out of the lamp and threw it at the white that attacked the Lord Commander, it burned his hand which had to be bandaged by Maester Aemon while it healed. So, obviously, Jon is not impervious to fire, like Dany. Or like any, "dragon," would be.
