Man I never comment on anything but this deserves to be talked about, to be praised. This video was informative, entertaining, emotional. It honestly blows my mind how much thought you've put into this and how much empathy and understanding you have for the world as a whole. Thank you for this touching message!

It still missed the entire point. The argument the commentor was making was an "anti natalist" one not an environmentalist one. They were saying it was immoral to have kids because the child will have to suffer greatly during their lifetime, not that them existing will contribute to climate change.

On the reply to this first: regarding the comment guy's anti-natalism views, from reading his writing and reddit history I can say with confidence that he is a vocal and staunch anti-natalist. He's also all the other things I mentioned at the end. On the comment itself: thank you so so much - this is lovely. It was a hard video to make, so this really hits home.

@@struthlessI understand that, most anti-natalist have a bleak view of the world. That being said, since you're a new father, I'd really like to see your take on that concept because I'm kind of on the fence with anti natalism. Thank you for the response

This was a really good and informative look into these comminties, and its getting worse. These and doom communities on utube is REALLY bad. There's one I've been paying Attention to, minutesofhorror, that posts daily paranoid Schizophrenic rants, and has a HUGE following. All cus of these scared, God fearing people, looking for answers. I swear the way he interacts with his commentors, that it's like a borderline cult. They're afraid of everything from 5g, to testing the emergency system and it's ALL connected. And u can't try and talk logic with them. Fr.

Though I do wish he hadn't misunderstood the guys point. The guy was still wrong, but he didn't believe having kids was causing these disasters. He believed that kids wouldn't want to be born into a world with these disasters in them. Thats a subtle but important difference. I'm glad he called himself out at the end there, but even then he didn't quite realise that he'd strawmanned the poor guy.
@struthless
@struthless 7 месяцев назад
@@ASpaceOstrichyo, just want to add some context here. The guy is a vocal anti natalist who has a history of this type of comment. Originally i went into that but I cut it out in the edit coz it felt too much, but now I see i should have added more context. Sorry about that, my bad. My logic: I realised the extra comments made him easy to google, so you know... I figured it was a better move to keep it civil. Fwiw your interpretation is also correct! But I just figured I'd give some more details. In any case, I appreciate what you're writing coz you're trying to find the truth here, and potentially reveal a nicer picture. On the strawman note, I did consider using the term strawman instead of one-dimensionalising, but it wasn't accurate with the truth of his anti-natalist/anti population beliefs, however it does make sense with what I've presented. That is all to say, totally get ya and ty

@@struthlessI still think that guy didn't see your kid as the bad guy, but you, for supposedly making another person "experience the climate apocalypse", and for adding fuel to the fire. I think that kinda thinking is really unhelpful though, because - as some other commenter mentioned - if people can't have kids, who are we saving the planet for? That type of thinking takes away a lot of motivation to tackle climate change. And if he did mean that we shouldn't create more sufferers, that also takes away motivation. If none of us have kids because "the world's ending anyway" then that's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy, as opposed to actually having a kid (or at least being okay with others having them) and working towards a better future for those upcoming generations. Anyways, really amazing and extraordinarily valuable video, thanks!

Heard a great saying that came from someone who’d had enough of the doom media during covid and just stopped going online for news: “if something is so important, someone will tell me”. The sentiment was that we can’t concern ourselves with every single crisis across the globe. We have to do our thing, in a way that’s responsible and considerate, and that’s enough.

This is actually the same way, I describe my media consumbtion. As someone who wants to help everyone, who actually swang into the oppsite side once (the nihilism), I heavly started to reduse my media consumbtion and the amount of things I get to know, day to day. Funny thing is, since I started doing that, it seems way more important things happend. Covid, Wars, etc, but the more I think about it, its probably just the thing, that I don't have much that "overrides" these things. I don't have the small news, that immeadly override the large news. That helps me, in particuar.

Very true! Though I think something that should also be considered is not just not letting doom-scrolling take over your life, but also consider having relationships with people that help bring more positivity in your life (and/or, if you're an empath, learning to not take on other people's pain/issues/struggles as a form of IRL doom-scrolling). It's good to sometimes be someone friends can turn to for comfort and support, but setting boundaries are also extremely important and can help with dealing with friends that have a lot of drama/issues in their lives, they're doomers, and/or place too much emotional responsibility on you that shouldn't be yours to carry. Speaking as someone that was a big empath as a kid/teen and sometimes still has struggles not taking on other people's issues as an adult.

This is what I've resorted too. I've stopped doomscrolling (though I admit I probably spend a bit too much time on YT) but I don't go on reddit or instagram. I used to go there for news, not anymore. If something is important enough I will hear it from a person.

Once when I rented a home, I discovered some newspapers in the attic from the late 50s. When I read them, I saw they had posted achievements of the locals, a list of the straight A students at the high school, and an assortment of other uplifting news. I can get sucked into doom scrolling, but see it and hop back off the merry-go-round

I bought a property with piles and piles of newspapers from the 1940s till the 2010s. Unfortunately, he took out the important ones such as the moon landing, etc... However, what got me was how similar the stories were today. Outrage at immigrants... Italians and Germans back then. Nauru, where Australia sent refugees to imprison them, was actually in a 1950s paper. Teenagers were out of control, all horrible, disrespectful and destined to destroy the country. It was kind of funny to see how little we have progressed.

I know this is late but I wanted to let you know I relate to that helpless feeling. Whenever I get sad about that I try to follow Stoicism. It’s basically this mentality where you acknowledge what you can’t control vs. what you can. In this case you can’t control the outside world but you can control your reaction. So with that try to accept things out of your hand and focus on things that are and maybe that can help.

The point of " show the way to save the world not just say it's fated to doom " plus the " people are not causing doom, greed of the economic system it's causing doom " kinda saved the video.

Why are people like Norman Borlaug who literally saved millions of people from starving not so much more known? It annoys me how the media focus so much on the negatives and not on the many inspiring people who everyday everywhere make the world better. Probably because it doesn't cause as much fear and doesn't sell as well, also, it depends on what you seek, news tend to me mostly negative because it's things happening in the world, depending on where you are there isn't a lot of positive happening, I'm Brazilian, I live in Rio, my government is in an almost war with the militia and the cartels, people die every day because of it, it's relevant, but people can watch other things, people can ignore, most people do.

Haven’t you heard the “I don’t want to bring a child into this world” argument before? It’s not so much that your baby is in any way responsible for climate catastrophe (because overpopulation is a deadset myth), but that you have tasked her with inevitably witnessing it, and experiencing a lower quality of life as a result. That idea is not something I’m willing to go to bat for, but I’m bringing it up because I feel like you misinterpreted the comment in a way that seemed to underpin a lot of the other points you made.

Beautifully said, great timing and so relatable. I literally wrote on my dry erase board yesterday “Does this come from a place of love or fear?’ Because as someone diagnosed with CPTSD and anxiety, fear tends to cloud my perception at times, so I like to remind myself through meditation to focus first on love and what I can do to impact those, in my immediate environment out of a place of love. That perception and shift in behavior is more life enriching than doom scrolling.

I am 23 and not gonna have a kid any time soon, but I do want kids at some point and people (including my own mother) constantly keep telling me it would be cruel of me to put a child into this world. I started to believe the same, because even I have often thought I would have prefered to not have been born. I only think that on my bad days though, because I know the planet and humans are beautiful and it is a privilege to experience it all. Most of my friends are so negative about the future that I often find myself crying about the planet as if it's already gone, and I really have to actively remind myself that honestly... all is well. Sure, some shit's fucked. But I am alive and I am okay. I am looking forward to the future, looking forward to being a mother and a grandmother and one day being very old, laughing at my younger self for being so silly and negative. I did this a while ago, but RU-vid and RU-vid comments became the norm (RU-vid is just as bad as instagram and the others due to comments and shorts) and as you may or may not have noticed you’ll subconsciously read and comment on videos such as this. No diss just something I’ve personally noticed in myself and I honestly hope this isn’t the case for you. RU-vid is the last frontier for me, and from that point I’m done with it for good. I’m actually scared because i feel disconnected but I know that’s the addiction talking. Best of luck with your journey and I hope a tonne of positivity follows.

Thank you so much for making this video. It was deeply personal and relatable. Hurt people, hurt people- it's a cliche but it's true. There is an overwhelming amount of misinformation and doom and we owe to each other to be more intentional, discerning, and curious w what we take in and share/comment on. I'm really happy I clicked on this video bc now it's one of my favorites. I've been really lost lately and this video reminded me that there are efforts always being made to preserve what's good and worth fighting for in the world. Your video truly made me tear up. My friends really started telling me I was a doomer when I became extra invested in the recent AI news cycles because I was buying into the hype. I found the best method to helping me degrade my doom, was seeking out the opposing opinion’s and takes. Most definitely, in this world where “news seeks you out” instead of “you seeking the news” you find it hard to be recommended something that will stop you from buying in as a bigger believer. So additionally, if there’s a specific sub-topic of news you find hard to get away from, maybe try to “find the grey”. I know when I start thinking in black and white my attention becomes captive.

If you want a positive data point on AI: I'm going back to university this year to do data science after failing out of a science bachelor about 10 years ago because of ADHD (among other things). I have taught myself to code using AI and have built a "tutor bot" to help me bridge the gap between my potential and my learning disability. There are tools that exist today that didn't exist ten years ago for people like me. Traditional learning is built for those who learn in a certain way and I had given up on ever making it in traditional education. I am so happy that this technology developed because it has literally changed the course of my life. My plan is to become a statistics specialist and uncover fraudulent science before it can be disseminated. If we could go back in time and catch that "vaccines cause autism" scientist before his fraud got so far it would have a huge impact on todays world. I hope I can prevent that kind of bad science making it out into the world in the future.

There's a fantastic nonfiction book called How To Be Miserable by Randy J. Paterson that has a chapter on almost exactly this topic. In it, he discusses the lack of relevancy most news stories have to our daily lives; how often "breaking news" stories are actually just repetition of one negative event, over and over again; the bias towards doom and the unwillingness to show a complete picture the 24-hour news cycle has; and--ha!--the similarity between many news programs and reality TV. The whole book is well worth a read if you're interested in psychology with a touch of humor. The conceit is that it's an instruction manual on--as the title says--how to be miserable, with the understanding that you should do the opposite to what he says. Entertaining, informative, and possibly life changing!

This video was massively insightful. My partner has ADHD, so doomscrolling is something she's very much aware of, she feels she needs that constant income of dopamine, and feels that constantly scrolling on social media is how she can achieve it... She also knows this isn't the healthiest way about it. More recently though, in the midst of the conflict between Israel and Gaza, she's *constantly* scrolling for updates (and, in turn, bad news). First thing in the morning, all throughout the day, even as I'm trying to get to sleep. She'll then constantly feed me each and every tidbit of information she's finding on it, how many casualties there are, what large cap companies are doing in reaction, what the governments are doing about it, what this means for our country, what this means for the world, what this means for us as individuals, the list goes on. And whilst I can see the importance of educating oneself and how dangerous and easy it is to bury our heads in the sand and pretend it isn't happening (I'm much more the modest approach of offline news I seek myself and slow-journalism intake), but I've realised just how hard and fast the sense of depression has begun sinking in, courtesy of my partner constantly shoving this news down my throat, and if/when I communicate that I'd rather not talk about it, or get into a full-blown discussion of it, she'll respond with, "I'm sorry THIS is an inconvenience on your day when there are people out there dying!" or she'll respond in a way that my stone-walling or deflection is me telling her she's wrong. She isn't wrong, but her approach to expecting me to absorb ALL of this news at the pace she is, that's wrong. Whilst I feel I could do more to educate myself on the world's current events, I'm glad doom-scrolling isn't nearly as prevalent in my life as it is in hers. I genuinely feel as though it massively feeds anxiety and depression, and that opting not to sink into that side of social media or any media in general is healthy. Everything in moderation, basically!

Something that might help with that as well is that the comment wasn't quite as bad as it sounded. He wasn't blaming Struthless having kids for these disasters. He was saying that kids wouldn't want to be born into a world with these disasters in them. Essentially taking the "I didn't ask to be born" attitude that a lot of struggling people have and projecting it onto newborn kids. Don't get me wrong, its still a wrong worldview, but its nowhere near as bad as "you having kids is dooming the world".

that last part got to me. it's so easy to crystallize a person's entire being through a negative comment on the internet. or hell, if someone makes a bad take (tm) and gets raked over the coals for it--likely that's the only thing we remember about that person. tbh this is a byproduct of doomscrolling--we're more likely to remember the bad things a person does online, even if it was just an isolated incident all that isn't to excuse people who deliberately, repeatedly, and willfully inflict misery upon people. but moreso it's an observation that doomscrolling removes nuances from people

Thank you very much for this video. It is a great reminder how being "chronically online" and consuming news to ease my sense of lack of control makes it worse. I often paint a bleak forecast about the future because the information I have is skewed to the negative side of things, and sometimes ruin it for people when I feel it is my duty to "let people know". We should continue to encourage ourselves and the people around us to solve problems instead of preparing for a helpless and hopeless future. Perhaps when people consciously seek good news instead of bad news, news companies will be incentivized to flip the valence of the kinds of news they publish, ending this negative spiral. Thank you also for walking the talk with what you did at the end of the video and inspiring every viewer here. Cheers mate

I admit I’ve been a ‘doomscroller’ in the past, and it led to a dark place. I’m also an addict..6 yrs on suboxone, some call that being sober, some don’t. I say I’m sober because I’m not engaging in the behaviours I once was. But anyway…doomscrolling is addictive, and it can get dark fast. It's super easy to get sucked into the doom and gloom of the internet's constant doomposting, and it's super easy to use a negative comment and use that as a target, even if you blur out the name for it. But the fact that you went out of your way to even admit fault on doing that and being, in a way, just like the guy posting, and getting to know more about him and his situation, and getting to understand him as a person as opposed to a comment, that takes guts and a level of empathy, maturity, and reflection that not a lot of people have or would be willing to admit. Key points Doom Scrolling and Media Impact: The video highlights how doom scrolling, the habit of constantly consuming negative and sensational news, has become prevalent in today's media landscape. It emphasizes how media often prioritizes negative content to capture attention and generate revenue. Balanced Reporting: The video underscores the importance of balanced and solution-oriented reporting. It suggests that media should not just focus on problems but also provide solutions and progress to inspire and inform the audience. Media Literacy: Media literacy is crucial to combat doom scrolling. People can be more selective in their media consumption, seek slow journalism, and look for news that offers solutions to better understand the world. Positive Perspective: The video encourages individuals to seek a more accurate and balanced view of the world. The idea is to fill gaps in understanding with positive and informative content, focusing on progress and solutions rather than pessimism. Recognizing Humanity: The video concludes by emphasizing the importance of recognizing the humanity behind negative comments and the need to see people as individuals rather than scapegoats for doom. It encourages a more empathetic approach to online interactions.

It’s always amazed me how deep people get into doom scrolling. I tend to take my mums stance on news and such. “If it’s something that’s important enough for me to know/ to affect my life, I’ll find out when I need to.” The most social media platform she has is RU-vid and she uses it for exercising and hair tutorials. Focus is on friends, family and trying to live as good a life as possible. I stick with this because my brain always creates enough negative energy on its own for a multitude of reasons. I know the news will make it worse and put me in a bad place. So instead of focusing on that or trying to solve the huge problems, I try to spread joy and care. In my neighborhood I’ve started giving baked goods and sharing what I grow in my garden. It’s led to some amazing memories already. I feel like these little things done enough will make big change. I’ve also learned that too many ppl are surprised when someone does something nice with zero motivation and expect nothing in return.

I quit watching the news in 2019 when I was preparing for a big test and a big career advancement. I also stopped social media. After I passed the test, I discovered that I had developed an allergy to the news and to social media. Even the thought of it made me feel ill. I’ve never looked back and I preach, to anyone who’ll still listen, the virtues of an extended media fast. I liked your video. But I think the doom scrolling thing is worse than just the doom part. It’s the infinite scroll. My family and my wife’s brothers family went on a trip to Michigan a couple years ago with our 4.5 kids. As folks would slowly rise in the morning, I’d go out on the patio and pull up RU-vid. I found myself watching shorts, which is something that I NEVER do. Next thing I know, 45 mins had passed. This happens a couple of times on the trip. At one point, I looked at my history. It absolutely blew my mind. I had watched a couple hundred shorts in that week. The content was really inconsequential. Some tool tips, some fool trips. Some cruel quips…(sorry) Nothing controversial. Nothing doomy. But when I looked at that list, I felt so small. I felt like I had given part of myself to the algorithm. I had wasted valuable time with my family. I felt terrible. I believe we create the world that we want to live in. What I mean is: We SEE what we expect to see. What we WANT to see. And we feed our desires with the things that we want to fill our world. If we don’t do this deliberately, then it gets done for us. And if it’s being done for us, it’s being done by someone(a system) that has a financial or social interest. So I decided, as much as I could help it, that I would be the one filling in my world. It’s amazing how the world appears when you stop letting social media create it for you. You see others through a lens of love and empathy. You see people in your neighborhood as neighbors, not strangers. “Global events” are replaced by the important things happening in your home. The time frame for thought or response goes from immediate to eternal. Thanks for starting a dialogue and for helping some people stop the scroll. You know what would be cool? Find the commenter and interview him or do some kind of collab.

I'm really glad you didn't end the video where you had originally intended to. That introspection is something I rarely see in videos & it completely slapped me in the face. Love the effort you put into this man

I'm an anti-natalist myself but I would never comment that to a new parent. WTF. Thanks for spreading the positivity dude- you're doing good for this world.
@Amarox3000
@Amarox3000 5 месяцев назад
Same here. I believe anti-natalism is generally a personal philosophy that people tend to come to on their own. I wish all prospective parents would really consider their choice in the context of their child's potential suffering, rather than just their own desires about 'wanting a mini me' etc. But proposing it as actual legislation will always have dire consequences and, like you say, to scream at someone for having kids AFTER the fact is completely pointless.
@adriadelafuente3648
@adriadelafuente3648 5 месяцев назад
You can just not want kids, and that's fine. But anti natalism is a self defeating ideology, as if it propagates to its conclusion, there will be nobody to continue the idea. An idea that cannot continue into the future is a dead idea.

@@joriankell1983 I don't think they are gonna punch the babies, don't worry I don't share the same ideologies at all, but I don't think it just means that they hate children and want them gone, maybe it's more about thinking twice before having children? Idk, but I don't think they are a threat to kids overall

I deal with CPTSD and Object Permanence issues so it's quite often that it feels difficult to get back into a positive headspace and not keep on the lookout for negative patterns unless I'm almost being constantly reminded. Your videos like this have always been a breath of fresh air and I always come out feeling lighter from them, they're like their own form of meditation. I knew I had a problem getting caught up in negative news and stories so I've had to unsubscribe from things like "AITA" because it would just make me see more awful stories about people. I used to tell myself it was like some kind of research, like I was looking out for signs so they wouldn't happen to me. But now I'm in a truly healthy relationship, not just one I thought was healthy because I was lying to myself. Things are good for me and I don't need to continue to poison my mind with doom and gloom. I used to think couples posting romantic things or pages filled with only the wholesome were cringe and they made me uncomfortable. But letting all of that into my life now only makes my existing love grow stronger. Not only for my partner but for myself and others, it brings me far more hope and happiness than trying to "look out for the bad" ever had.

I dont think that comment was trying to say that your daughter was going to cause climate change or the water wars, but that she'll have to live through them

exactly, he's interpreted the comment completely incorrectly. Still a childish thing to say to someone who's just had a kid. They're probably not wrong but there's no point in saying that to someone with a kid.
@SnoFitzroy

@@ladamita_exe the point is that adopting would mean you still get a kid but don't cause a new one to have to live through climate change, just making the time until that more comfortable for one who exists.

There was this one time I left a sour comment. On later reflection, I went back and acknowledged I'd been a total sour-puss. The tuber was so chuffed that I'd pivoted my attitude.I think we both came out better from it.- It's okay to change our minds and there's no shame in acknowledging another person's perspective is okay, fine, or even better.

Second video of yours and I'm duly impressed. Especially with that final bit of commentary. The dehumanization of each other is one of the many reasons why we doomscroll. It's painful to be dehumanized, so we look for scapegoats. Actually REhumanization each other is much more effective at solving the worlds problems than any of the technology that we think will save us. Re-sacralizing life in all its complexity, beauty and contradictions is how we expand our consciousness and create a better future.

Amazing video! I noticed the media making negative reports on the state of NYC, like it was going down in flames. However, I watch Terry B’s channel and he just makes cool videos following fixed gear cyclists through NYC. When I watch the news, the city is falling apart. When I watch a Terry B video from a day or two ago, it looks like life is going on as usual. It was very eye-opening to make this realization. I am becoming more and more aware of the content I am consuming. It is good to be skeptical, and it is also good to be optimistic. Doom scrolling is not good food for the psyche.
