This is such a common problem with westerners reviewing KBeauty products. Chosung22 is considered "indie high-end", like Jeffrees' own brand, different from brands like Iope and Laneige. The shades are set for Asian skin, which is also why most are yellow based and limited to 2 - 4 shades. With KBeauty brands if a foundation has a pink undertone it's a "brightening" foundation. And "light" usually means light weight, sheer is what is used to denote light coverage; like "whitening" actually means "brightening". The tackiness of the product helps with wear time, setting sprays didn't start to become common in Korean brands till the 2nd half of last year, so the tackier a base the better it adhered to the skin and the better other products would adhere to it. Which did make them trickier to use if you weren't used to them. The aim for these types of bases is glowing skin, if you want a matte-er finish there are no sebum setting powders that are designed to remove shine or you can use a bottled foundation; that is where you'll normally find the more mattifying ones.

Thank you for posting this and I'm glad people are seeing this. I posted something kind of similar but I don't think people are seeing it. The definitions of coverage and finish and everything are sooo different between western and eastern products. So many people are complaining about the lack of shade range too, but not taking a second to look at it from a different point of view and realize that Korea is a very homogenous country and most products have 2 shades. I think the most I've seen is Laneige, which has been selling in the US for years now so that's why they have expanded their range, and I think they have 6 or 7? Which is a lot for a Korean brand. It takes a long time to test colors and find the perfect undertones and be ready to sell... Especially when they just started to sell in the US. I don't get why people get sooo personally upset about it, when they can just buy a foundation from a brand that has more color ranges. Because chances are these wouldn't even have the right undertone for them anyways.

하나 I'm glad it is being seen also, and that people are finding it informative. I have tried to explain this before, on other westerners' videos, but this is the first time people seem to be interested in hearing it. The lack of a wider shade range and the word "whitening" have always been a bone of contention for most. Laneige has upped their shade range, yeah, Pony Effect has also recently increased her shade range. Etude Houses' Double Lasting comes in 8 shades I think. I think that the cushion foundations are most likely cost prohibitive when it comes to a sudden shade expansion, especially if they are unsure whether their product would even sell in the countries where a wider shade range would be necessary. Bottled foundation is more cost effective as it has less complicated packaging, so it costs less to produce a wider shade range.

Yeah, I have as well, but you explained it a lot better than I was able to lol. I find it hard to put things into words. But yeah, a lot of things get lost in translation when it comes to skin care and cosmetics. It kind of sucks that people get worked up over it because it takes just a few minutes to look into it to realize that it's not "whitening," to understand their meaning of coverage, and different finishes etc. There's tons of information online about Kbeauty, and especially since it's starting to get so popular, I hope people are looking into all of it before getting so personally uspet about things they don't understand. I just want people to take a second and look at things from a different perspective and realize that the country this is from is on the other side of the world and that the US(and some of Europe) is really unique in how diverse we are.

And a lot of people are upset over the amount of product in cushions... but don't understand that it is because you're able to use less product for a similar effect, and that it is used in a different way.. I'm currently in love with Missha tension pacts right now, and I don't know if I will ever be able to go back to "regular" foundation. These things last forever, way longer than a bottle of foundation for the amount of money, and they work way better and are way more convenient on top of it.

It's a Korean brand, so first of all, not too much diversity in terms of skin tone over there in Korea. Secondly, Korean people strive for a pale, porcelain look. The fact that they have four shades are much better than most brands in Korea.

Sofia Sotrihina I feel like tons of people are used to wearing foundation that is way too dark for them. Not that Laura necessarily does..I actually think most of her foundations are good matches especially compared to a lot of other YTers. But maybe she is used to going for just a slightly darker shade. If that's what they like that's fine and their business, but it doesn't mean that it is literally too light. I'm about NW15-20 and I usually always get matched several shades too dark to the point where I look...er...offensive.. I am fair skinned but I think I have a little olive(GREEN;not dark or medium) overtones and that throws people way off. Like my skin isn't highly pigmented, but no one wants to believe I match NW15 perfectly or foundations like KVD 46 or Nars Mont Blanc. I had a hard time obtaining Mont Blanc because no one wanted to give it to me. I'm not porcelain (neither are those shades whatsoever) but that doesn't mean I should be wearing NC35-45 like so many people attempt to match me as lmao that's just crazy to me, I can't get over it. I've only been matched properly a few times at Sephora and Mac. I was matched at the right shade depth but the wrong undertone at Ulta. Generally people just see that I'm "kind of white" but have darker features and I'm not super fair and they run straight to NC40. lol

This is a Korean brand. You have to remember that it is a very homogenous country and some Korean brands can carry as few as two shades(21 & 23), so this is a lot for a Korean brand. This specific product is also a new idea stemming from the cushions that are becoming more popular over here, that have been around forever in Korea. ....And about "too much" product coming out... In the instructions it even said to use the edges of the puff to blend it out, not the middle.... If you keep using the middle of the puff, of course more product is going to keep coming out, and it's going to not look as intended and show imperfections. The reason there is less amount of product and not 1oz like most foundations or bb creams, is because you end up using less amount of product with these types of foundations(when used as intended..). It's meant to be a product that evens out skin tone and creates a dewy finish that everyone loves over there, and that's exactly what it does. It's not really what the majority of westerners are looking for, so it can be difficult to understand without knowing beforehand.

And the reason you guys think it isn't "light" coverage, is because it's a little bit of a different definition in Korea.... and also because you guys squeezed a shit ton of product out before you started applying the puff.. the instructions said to only squeeze a little out.. not to squeeze it a couple times for a few seconds lol. That's why it is "tacky".. You should try to lightly puff it on without squeezing it out first. That's how these are meant to be applied.

The reason there isnt many shades is because its a korean product and koreans absolutely adore white/pale skin, they have tonnes of whitening makeup and skin products so that explains why there isnt many shades :)

Hey Laura! Great review, I love when you collab with Jeffree :) as far as this foundation, having 4 shades (in a Korean brand) is actually quite a lot! The average brand has 2-4 shades to choose from, as in Korea, they really put a lot of emphasis on having fair skin. Of course, in America it's pretty difficult to get by with just 4 shades, because 1) America is pretty diverse and 2) the beauty standards/expectations in America are much different than in South Korea! Having 0.34 ounces also isn't that unusual for a cushion foundation, which is what this essentially is. Very inconvenient in terms of the lasting value, but they're decided to be quick and easy, and most likely they wouldn't want to put too much product in (I'm only guessing) to prevent the product from drying out. However, as a consumer like you I can agree that that's frustrating! Also, the product is meant to stay "tacky"because like I was saying about the difference in beauty expectations between the cultures, matte skin absolutely isn't a trend. Dewy skin is the look, even for those with oily skin; a lot of times, the BB creams/foundations have a really impressive built in formula that works at oil control so powder isn't especially necessary all over. I really enjoyed watching this! I just thought I'd add a little in put for anyone who might still be curious about the product :)

IT's read as "Cho Sung Ah 22". Cho Sung-Ah (or Sung-Ah Cho) is a well-known Korean makeup artist and is known as one of the 1st generation of Korean Makeup artists. CSA22 is also well-known for their strobe creams and jelly pressed powders too. hope that helped!:)

It kills me when people try out Korean foundation and complain about the color range! It's a very monotone country where people whiten their skin! I'm glad they ended up liking it. It looks very pretty on them from here!

Tammy Uptown I wouldn't say they whiten it like bleach or anything but Korean people do "brighten" the skin to clear complexion and discoloration. They also use a lottt of sun block and stay away from the sun because they do love fair skin :))

Since the it's a Korean beauty product im not surprised it's light coverage. Korean beauty standards are more natural looking and their way of make up is to look like you're not wearing it at all. Korean beauty standards and Western beauty standards are so different. Koreans think we were cakey make up and for them it's too "costumey"

When they don't realise why it's so different because Korean brands mainly target East Asians. These products aren't exactly weird to us. It's just a new take on a cushion foundation lol. The cultural difference is why it's a different case, sheen (Asians prefer a dewy instead of matte) and shading is because of its targeted to the Asians look, not western, keeping in mind most brands have 2-3 shades max.

Scarlette Strawberry I feel like most people dont understand that when trying out a foreign brand, it will always cater the the popular looks from that country. Jeffree and Laura both forgot it was a Korean brand so it would most definitely have been very different from the western brands they're used to

I agree and I completely understand k beauty. However, they got this at Sephora. Meaning they are NOW also catering to the western beauty community which is much more diverse. If this brand was solely in Korea then I'd understand the lack of shades but it's now trying to appeal to the western world, they should've released more shades before cooperating with American Sephora

Mackenzie Christine the thing is, the biggest audience for Korean brands are still Asians. Right now it's not Asian brands trying to appeal to western audiences. If they were, they would carry more shades. Right now it's SEPHORA trying to appeal to its Asian demographic because normally, these things are sold online.

Kurochie right now, Sephora is the one jumping on the K beauty bandwagon. It's not the Asian brand waning western customers though that is a bonus but it's SEPHORA trying to attract an ASIAN audience for convenience. Even now, Korean brands are STILL used nearly wholey by Asians. The only difference now, is that we can go into stores instead of shopping online. Brands such as L'Oréal and covergirl are already trying to do the same by adapting "cushion" foundations but with their formula.

I think six months is short for a person that has a lot of makeup or doesn't where foundation all the time, but for the average working woman like my mom that wears foundation everyday except weekends it's perfect. I got her born this way foundation for Christmas and shes already got that finished up.

Ok, but this is a korean make up brand, and korean people is pretty pale so there is no need to them to have darkest shades, also, is tacky because in Korea the "matte" face is not a thing, actually, they love the shiny and almost oily skin look :)

exactly what i was thinking, what "we" think is good in north america is very different compared to what koreans think is good but i do admit that that brand is sooo pricy compared to the formula and amount of their products (lol if you want k makeup just buy off road shops like etude house or innisfree, you get more for ur buck)
