Im crying right now. Im the game designer for this game and reading your comments has made my day and my weekend completely, 16 years after!! It was my first videogame published and cannot believe some people remember it so long after we released! What a shame I’ve only watched this video now!
Wow! Just looked you up to make sure this wasn't a troll or something - that is amazing! There's so much I want to say to you or ask, as you can imagine, but probably too much to dump here - so I guess I'll just say thank you! This is probably the single most treasured game of my childhood for me, the only one that maybe comes close is Raiden X on flash (the first video game I ever played). 😅 If you're ever up to do some sort of Q&A, or just general conversation, I'd love to ask about the game a bit more - especially since I've been trying to discover as many of the unused runes still left in the game's files as possible.
By the way… in my comment I didn’t mention this was truly a TEAM effort, by an amazing team with no fear of doing something new and lucky to be funded.
And yes. Tiffany was supposed to be sooooo annoying. I would also like to add something to your video, we wanted to have the option of casting versus shielding. Since it is a stylus, you can only do one at the same time. If We decide to do it again with DH2 we will do it MUCH more fun. I am so happy that you spent years playing this. Thank you from the team.
Hi, just wanted to say a huge thank you for your love for Doodle Hex and hard work on this video! I was at Tragnarion Studios and I didn’t contribute much to this game other than some playtesting and feedback (and my wife did some voicework!) but the team working on it was incredibly passionate about it and invested a lot of love in it!
Man, I don't think I've ever had so many people behind the making of a game I've covered respond to one of my videos, even games much smaller than this. 😅 The love and passion is clear to see, -and is reminding me that i never finished part 3 of this series and should probably get on that at some point soon...-
I'm also one of the developers of this game and let me say thanks for showing love for this game that meant so much to us. We were really proud of it, but sadly didn't get the reception we would have liked. Massive kudos for this. Thanks.
Also, Strat absolutely melted any other opponent in PvP thanks to the quickening rune. We had many games at the office and I never got defeated when using Strat. :D
I'm so happy that this video exists. I LOVED Doodle Hex as a kid, and I still come back to it today. The game was so unique, so stylish, and the replay value was insane. The UI was gorgeous. The characters are incredibly memorable. I was a Nadia main as a kid for the DoT. I use the runes from Doodle Hex in my art even today as motifs or patterns - and I don’t think I will ever forget about it. It's devastating how unknown this amazing game ended up being.
@Dzyntara: fun fact about Nadia voices: It was Eva, our QA tester at the time who recorder her voice sounds! I can’t believe you still use the patterns! It was a huge effort to come up with so many different shapes clearly distinguisable from each other! The unique characters were thanks to the awesome artists Mar Hernandez and Enrique Corts! The whole project was a team effort from Mallorca, Spain!
As the founder of Tragnarion studios, I thank you for making this video. No, it didn't go our way. We put so much effort and hours into this. It was really a work of the wonderful people I had around me at the time. Specially from Jon. I remember coming up with the idea in a hotel at a games con in Germany but then Jon and the team took it over. I wish you could have seen DH2, but alas, it was not to be. There are many reasons for that. Game cartridge size and cost, not being part of a big publisher and getting shelve space, distribution, piracy (I know, it was rampant in those days. But what can you do), etc. etc.. As a small studio in Mallorca we tried and I think, as it is said in the beginning of the video, we made a masterpiece. BUT... It can be improved... Before I die, I will find a media to do it on and make it better with ideas that we never were able to implement. Thank you for enjoying the game we have worked on so hard.
It's wonderful to still be seeing comments from the people behind this game every now and then. 😊 I always thought it was such a shame this game came out when it did, because I feel like if this came out on the App Store as an iphone game or something, I feel like it really could have taken off - especially if it had online multiplayer. I could be completely off here, since this is just a hunch, but I always got the feeling maybe the reason it didn't take off so much was a lot to do with it being on the DS. While a lotta people had a DS, most of the DS library was much more casual sorta games, whereas I'd say Doodle Hex is relatively "competitive". It's got a bit of a learning curve, and it's got a very high skill ceiling. As well as that, of course, the DS was infamous for shovelware as I said - so I imagine a lotta people just stuck to the franchises they already knew, unfortunately. Either way, if there are ever any updates on any potential revival for Doodle Hex in any form, please let me know.
@@doublechindoge7 Thanks mate. We will. This story is not over yet. I'm determined to make it work one way or another. By the way, my favourite character are Fey and Madrugada. I always go for the dangerous ones! :)
@@doublechindoge7 Also, the top screen was very restrictive about what we could do. Most of the processing went do the effects and gameplay of the bottom screen. We wanted to do more, but the limits of the platform were as it was. Very few animations, very few graphics and the team did a great job in animating what they could. I know that it doesn't look great, but the team did a wonderful job of making it fun.
@@Dzyntara Thank you mate. The art and music that went behind it could have been made into a greater thing. Oh well, it will be back at some point. Starting another project soon that will be amazingly fun. Something between FTL and Monkey Island! Good stuff.
Yeah, I can't blame you. I mention in my video on Hyperion that it took me years to beat him for the first time. 😅 Once you beat him once, you kinda build momentum in my experience; and it's still extremely hard, but it's at least easier to beat him a second time.
nice video essay! not really a big fan of the couple loud moment 'jokes' you snuck in there but otherwise, good beginning to a breakdown of a game that I'm becoming more intrigued about by the second.
*Then the Doodle Hex fan recruitment plan is working...* >=)< -also i may be physically incapable of making one of these without volume boosting at least one gag... I showed as much restraint as I could for this.-
15:00 Well, with the advent of spoiler-tastic RU-vidrs today, they'd probably scour on this game and post complete walkthrough and endings for views. If Doodle Hex was made today, I imagine the stylus drawing gimmick would be replaced with a cooldown mechanic of sorts for some spells.
I have a question: Where exactly did you emulate the game from? Like which site.Because i really wanna play the game but i dont wanna risk getting a virus.
