Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the meaning behind each of the more prominent deaths in the entire Harry Potter series.
Although the first few instalments of Harry Potter were clearly written for a younger audience, it’s evident from the very beginning of The Philosopher’s Stone that this is not a series afraid to kill off characters. In fact, before we even get 50 pages into that very first novel, we learn-alongside a distraught 11-year-old Harry Potter-that his parents not only died but were MURDERED by one of the most evil and dark wizards of all time. And so, while many of us were indeed taken by surprise when some of our favourite characters were later killed off in the books/films that followed, it really should’ve been somewhat obvious that we were in for a dark and treacherous ride.
Which brings us to today’s topic-all those deaths. What did they mean? Did they stand for anything? Or were they simply meant to toy with our emotions? Well, in today’s video, we’ll be discussing these deaths and, in particular, what each of them meant in the larger context of the series.
To start us off, let’s begin…at the beginning…

Lupin's death also represented the passing of the torch. He was the last Marauder and therefore the last direct link between Harry and the generation of the Marauders. Lupin was also the last remaining major mentor to Harry, thus signaling to Harry that he is now the one who will be expected to take on adult tasks after the war.

Think there is actually one death you should have covered but didn’t, that of Harry himself, willingly walking into death to sacrifice himself. Surely this is one of the most symbolically significant of them all

Peter Pettigrew's death wasn't mentioned. Wormtail was killed by the silver hand given to him by Voldemort for his moment of hesitation and mercy when didn't strangle Harry. The silver hand interpreted the hesitation as disloyalty and then strangled Wormtail. I interpret that as Peter's payback for betraying James and Lily years earlier.

Freds death is the saddest to me because, as an identical twin, I know firsthand how powerful and deep that connection is. It goes so much deeper than regular siblings that I can't think of a way to describe it. My sister is the first person I talk to when I have a problem. Losing her would be far more than tragic for me, it'd probably feel more like losing part of myself

@mistv901 Oh, I understand that the curse will eventually do Dumbledore in...unless there's a "cure" discovered or created. Likely not to happen...but this is magic...and the rules are fuzzy. However, drinking the poison on purpose.. Harry forcing it down (with Dumbledore's permission) Dumbledore was a definite. It's a very fine line, obviously. But, makes WAY more sense that Draco being the Elder Wand master because Harry physically snatched Draco's own wand...with the Elder Wand still with Voldemort far away...and THAT gave Harry the Elder Wand. 😊

I also wanted to point out that Fred's death was very important for a lot of characters. It was very powerful, how after Fred died Harry and Ron had to face a giant spider and stunned it at exactly the same time. Ron was scared of spiders because Fred turned his teddy into one years before. But that fear was obliterated, since now his biggest fear is losing more people he loves. George and Ron grew closer after Fred's death because of all their siblings they were often most overlooked. People would often see the twins, but not Fred and George as individuals, which is why they made a game out of it to mask that pain. Ron was often overlooked by others like Skeeter and Slughorn as not being an important part of the trio. And they helped each other through it. Fred's was one of the most powerful deaths in the series especially to the Weasley family as a whole.

One death you didn't mention was the death of former Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgour. It wasn't just an ordinary love that killed Bellatrix but a mother's love for her children. A mother's love for her daughter in the Harry Potter series we saw more than once that that particular kind of love should never be underestimated which is exactly what Bellatrix did, she did the same thing that Voldemort did and in doing so it cost he her life as it did to a certain extent to Voldemort a mother's love knows no limits and has no weaknesses

Dumbledore's death also served as removing the one safety net Harry had left. Throughout the series we always clung on to the fact that Voldemort would never beat Dumbledore, so changing that made Harry's own vulnerability salient.

I actually was a teenager back in the years when the saga was being published in my country... And there was this huge sense of expectation and suspense when a new book was released, you know, no social networks, no RU-vid, hardly any fans forums to be browsed from your parents' home computer via a painstakingly slow internet connection... I remember being spoilered Dumbledore's death by the friend who lent me the book after reading it first, and being literally so incapable of accepting it, that I insisted on making a bet with him that he was pulling me and Dumbledore wouldn't die. So a few days later I had to cope with a lost bet in addition to a lost imaginary guide and safety.

People severely underestimate how terrible Fred was to Ron. Fred traumatized him, in multiple ways, maybe permanently. It really hits home in the last book when Ron says "Bill was always good to me." Fred was worse than James, Snape, or Draco. But because he is always nice to Harry, no one really notices. And Ron just accepts it. I have to wonder if Fred dying at the end of the series might have been a bit of a hidden message from the author for those that notice.

One could say being a role model to harry, aka Lupin, Serius Dumbledore and yes even Severus was a role model as well, was very hazardous. I think the point behind all the deaths that all swirled around Harry, whether friends like Dobby and Fred, served to clarify, in the End Only Harry must face Voldemort, He was totally alone in his fight to finally end Tom Riddle, Tom and Harry were mirror images of one another. Harry following the honourable life and Tom following the darkness, All the deaths have proven that Harry is prepared, and no longer views death as an ending.

What about Frank Bryce, Bertha Jorkins, and Charity Burbage? Those were mentioned in the books. Bertha was killed by Voldemort because her memory (due to a Memory Charm he broke through) and body were damaged after giving information about the TriWizard Tournament and was no longer useful. Frank Bryce died standing up to Voldemort after hearing what he was going to do to Harry. Charity’s death was because she supported Muggles during Voldemort’s regime.

Quirrell was "left to die" ...and Voldemort repeats that Quirrell is dead.... But...Dumbledore never stated he IS dead. If he is dead, Voldemort killed him...not Harry. In fact, Dumbledore was worried about Harry's survival...because HE almost died. Cedric - This death shows Harry that Hogwarts isn't as safe as he liked to believe. It also shows Harry that facing Voldemort must be done alone. Sirius. Dobby, Dumbledore's deaths...were simply removing any powerful wizard that would not hesitate to intervene in the battle. Remus also tries to get involved...but Harry was able to refuse this aid. Moody's death...removes a character that was actually very under used (Barty was Moody much too long) and not needed. So, he's killed off. Snape's death ends his tragic and bitter existence. I agree this allows Snape to be exposed safely as an anti-hero. Battle of Hogwarts deaths....you'll find that all of these occurred prior to Harry dying in ths forest. It shows how high the stakes are ..and notivates Harry to be a self sacrifice. Harry's "death " was really the end of Harry and Voldemort's connection. Afterwards, he was free to act and was free of the burden of carrying around Voldemort's evil.

I think you missed part of the point of the death of Harry’s mother and all of the point in the death of Belatrix. I believe the deaths of both Harry’s mother and Belatrix were related. Both are related to the depth and power of a mother’s love, a concept the author deemed so important she conveyed it twice in books. Harry’s mother died protecting him from Voldemort’s death curse and Molly Weasley fought and killed Belatrix to avenge the death of her son and to protect her living daughter. I believe it was their maternal love which gave them the additional strength to prevail against the evil powerful wizards.

I think one of the most interesting things about Voldemort’s death was, not only did he die like any other regular man, despite his exhaustive efforts for immortality; he also died at the age of 71, which is within the normal lifespan of a common muggle but well under the normal lifespan for a common wizard.

Harry being an orphan is so much more than the development of his personality environmentally---you forget that Lily stepped forward to take the death curse herself, not just shielding Harry----but creating the complex (and bizarre) triangulation of energy which boomeranged and killed Voldemort, and made of Harry---a living Horcrux. Pretty complicated, but the entire series of events that unfolded, Harry being "The Chosen One", would never have occurred without Lily's intervention too.

Sirius Black’s death in The Order of the Phoenix, really gets me every time I watch it. I am absolutely in love with Sirius Black! He’s a very loyal, kind, loving and sweet Character! He’s also very handsome! In fact, I love him so much that I watch Movies 3, 4, 5, and 8 on repeat! I really wish that Sirius could’ve been the godfather that we all know him to be!

We don’t see it in the films, but the death of Amelia Bones is significant as it’s what ultimately leads to Voldemort taking over the Ministry. Without the Head of Magical Law Enforcement in the way, it cleared the path to Pius Thicknesse being in a position to be worthy of an Imperius Curse

I have a topic for a video, if you please! It regards Lily and James. So, we know they joined the Order and got married pretty much right after finishing Hogwarts. The Order by that time was pretty much done for and Voldemort had practically won. How exactly did they learn about the Order? Through Dumbledore? Why did he need them, then? Before the prophecy? Do, the timeline seems VERY confusing to me. When did they manage to meet Voldemort in this very short time before they went into hiding? What interest did Voldemort have in them before the prophecy (as they surely were not at all interesting/important to him at that time)? With Neville’s parents it all makes so much more sense as they were much older than James and Lily (I suppose they were close in age to Molly and Arthur?), we’ll-established Aurors and members for a long time. It’s very logical that would have met Voldemort more than three times by 1980. But as much as I love the Potters, the math doesn’t math, at all! Help me out, please! Another idea would be about the Malfoys about the same time, 1980-1981. I’d always imagined Draco’s birth in the middle of it played a much bigger role in Lucius not looking for Voldemort after his fall. I also believe Narcissa could also discourage him from that. IMHO, she had much more impact on things than could be presumed. Another idea was that the main reason why Lucius managed to get away both time is pretty simple - corruption in the Ministry. I’d expect him to be secretly involved with not just Fudge and Umbridge, but other Wizengamot members and they were simply too scared to sentence him as he’d simple tell all about their dirty business and they’d lose all their positions. They must have remembered Barty Senior all too well.

I think Harry was actually better off not having Sirius as a father figure. Sirius was kind of an a jerk, and I wouldn't doubt if Rowling killed him off as divine retribution for his being a vicious bully and never showing any true remorse for it.

Molly’s vanquishing of Bellatrix, ‘Not my daughter, you bitch!’, is yet another illustration of the power of maternal love. We see it at the beginning with Lily’s love protecting Harry. Even Narcissa is prepared to lie to Voldemort to protect Draco. Bellatrix’s assertion that she would joyfully sacrifice her child to Voldemort shows just how depraved she is. Therefore, it is fitting that she is killed because she attempted to come between a lioness and her cub.

Harry did not destroy the part of Voldemort that possesed Quirell, that was the part that was reborn in GoF Book Sirius is less a "father figure" - because he himself never grew up. All he did was ask a lot about pranks and he was not a nice person to persons he should have been nice to. Dumbledore s death was actually no suprise to me. I still think if people would sort of realize it was the only way. I men he begged Snape "Severus, please" and tbh no one in their right mind could have thought that he pleaded to be saved - really. How would Snpe have pulled that off? Dumbledore made sure üeople knew Snape was going back to Voldemort at the end of Gob "And now it's time for two in our midst tp acknoledge what they are" - when he made clear to all in the infirmary that Snape had a role to play (and made sure he knew about Sirius animagus form). Aftr that point I always found it sort of curious that people overlook what was done. For me... LUpins death made sense. ALL the old guard is gone (all Marauders - Lily and Snape) so all the animosities between that generaton are gone as well, giving any newly born peopke connected to any of them a clean slate. Even if Lupin had survived and Snape had as well (and no I would not wish for that because I believe Snape would still be bitter and lonely and not happy afterwards) and then Teddy went to Hogwarts were Snape would still teach... Great thing! So in a way it was sort of necessary to make sure all those old rivleres were gone and that the new generation was raised in a much more frinedly inviroment (and Rowling stated that Draco became more moderate after the war). Honestly Molly Weasley is not all kind and caring, she is flawed as all others. She is also not only protective but sort of wnats to control her children (not allowing Fred and George to invent joke products but wnating them to join the ministry or being sort of unkind to Hermone in Goblet becuase of a rumor spread by Rita Skeeter... Yes, she is a good character but... I have this "Mothers" and "fathers" problem with Harry Potter...

i've said it before but i've always felt like molly and bellatrix were sort of foils to each other, so it makes sense that molly ends up killing bellatrix. they're both surrogate mother figures to harry and voldemort respectively in a way. molly is a good and kind surrogate mother, who is frankly overburdened by her own children and yet takes on another; she loves harry selflessly and appropriately but isn't afraid to draw boundaries that he doesn't like for his own safety. bellatrix on the other hand is a twisted, sick mother figure; she has no children of her own and doesn't seem to remotely want any with her actual husband, rodolphus, and instead devotes herself to voldemort with the same kind of obsessive, incestuous devotion that you see in the "boy mom" archetype (mothers who have a weird and unhealthy obsession with their sons, coddle them endlessly and get jealous over their sons' girlfriends, etc). the fact that bellatrix is actually much younger than voldemort to me only serves to emphasize the twisted nature of the relationship.

Sorry to be that person that goes ‘um actually 👆🤓’ but we know who killed Hedwig! It’s actually Stan Shunkpie, the conductor of the knight bus. He was imperioused to be on the death eaters side, so he wasn’t himself. Snape wasn’t near the actual Harry. He was with Lupin and George during this, Snape was the one who cut George’s ear off using sectumsempra. He didn’t mean to, a death eater was about to kill Lupin so Snape shot that spell to stop them but he ended up catching George’s ear.
