What comes to mind when you think of well executed, thematically rich magic systems?

The Force in Star Wars (especially Legends though also Canon too). The Winds of Magic in Warhammer Fantasy.

Mage Errant by John Bierce. It is an interesting example of when everyone has magic, and how to make seemingly mundane magics powerful.

Good video all around, hope this gets the attention it deserves. I trend to the worldbuilding side of things so I can't say much thematically but 'The name of the wind' has a really intriguing and unique one. I've seen some other unique ones like Cultist of Cerebon which ties intrigue and drama into uncovering how magic has changed and why it changed which was a really good read. I hope to flesh out my own magic system at one point but with so many ideas I need to stop it's capabilities somewhere :)

Thanks! 👊 The name of the wind is a very well structured one, really like it. I haven’t heard of Cultist of Cerebon before tho, gonna check it out

Another great video! Had sudden inspiration recently into making and filling out a magic system. I didn’t want it to be as hard as a Sanderson system but still have a “science” to it. But like this video emphasizes, I wanted it to be rich in themes on its own. If you’re curious, it revolves around the idea of one’s perception and emotional connection to things in the world literally imbues the world with magic. For example, swords/arrows/spears/fangs all have an infusion of “harmful energy” (I’m still comin up with terminology) because they’ve been in the human psyche for thousands of years, but firearms being only recently in wide use, they do not have a strong magical connection. And because they keep advancing and changing, they might never have one.

This is very interesting. It also makes me think of the fact that swords and spears for example require a closer proximity and higher effort to kill than fire arms. Which means there’s probably more emotional involvement with the act of killing than these more modern weapons and this is another reason why they have a higher level of magic imbued into them. Also, this idea of making something more magical based on people’s perception of it could have so many interesting implications. For example, a prophet can actually become magical simply by the amount of faith and belief people direct towards him. Another idea is the horror trope of making a place haunted or evil because of the amount of death that happened there. There’s a lot of avenues to explore depending on your goal 🙌🏼
