Behind the poetry that Rumi created out of love for his teacher, Shams of Tabriz, is a deep spiritual teaching. This talk by author, Doug Marman, at the University of Toronto, explores a way of understanding this added layer of meaning that is hidden in his poetry. The talk is just over on hour long, with about 30 minutes of questions and answers at the end.

Thank you for making your interpretations of some of Rumi's writings available to the rest of us. His poetry, as interpreted by you, is a guiding light in the dark, showing us what we have in common, as opposed to arguing about what we don't agree on, our petty differences. I wanted to give my neighbor, who is a fanatic christian, your book "The hidden teachings of Rumi", but he refuses to even accept it ... because it is not christian. I wanted to give it to him, because I love him. But if it is not in the bible, or written by a devout christian, he refuses to read it.

All authentic Sufi poetry expresses three levels of understanding. The last and essential is the hidden, the esoteric. Also, they had to hide their true mystical message from the religious authorities or suffer the martyrdom of al-Hallaj. This guy is full of commonplace facts about Rumi's poetry that anyone with ears to hear already know. Far from illuminating the genius and beauty of Rumi's poetry, he deadens Rumi's message with his Western (materialistic) pedagogy. Only in intoxication with love for the Beloved can you reach even a glimmer of what Rumi is trying to transmit. The message only reaches the initiated. Not academics like this man. Rumi only began to achieve greatness after his renunciation of all his position as iman, and his scholarly achievements and honors to experience and transmit the oneness with God he achieved. This cat needs to lighten up, smoke some herb, and get drunk now and then. Rumi can only be understood experientially, not academically. Rumi would say this scholar is wasting his life burrowing in dusty tomes for facts while the revelation within spiritual intoxication escapes him.

Is there a complete translation of The Divan of Shams in English? I found only selections by Arberry or Barks. I saw the entire Work in Persian...3 volumes each divided into two parts printed in California... Many Thanks and Appreciation for your honest comment on the clip.

Alex, I do not know of any complete translation into English for the Divan-e-Shams. I've also read lots of poems that have been translated, but there are over 3,000 poems in the Divan-e-Shams! Reynold Nicholson also has a book on translations of some poems from the Divan. It is out of print now, but is worth finding.

After the fall of Fatimid empire Ismaili imam were in taqia or went into hiding. Rumi found about shams that he was imam of the time and he found that he reached his goal to reach imam of the time.

No way he spent 20 years studying Rumi. If he spend 1/2 year dedicated he would sound like he knows what he is talking about. It’s so dry and truly deadens the beauty and meaning of Rumi. For him to claim and “this” is what Rumi means is overly optimistic of his level of knowledge about Rumi. He completely mis explained the part about who is coaxing Rumi to talk about LOVE wrong! If you haven’t tread the path please don’t give yourself the position to translate and demean such an enormous work while taking quotes of previous authors out of context to show that they, who truly spend decades studying Rumi, as wrong. If you truly did this with dedication and understood it, you probably would have never made this PowerPoint presentation to speak about him, let alone translate a great body of his work. People who fluently speak the language, know the history and have historical reference to ideas Rumi refers to, and follow his path and are rightful scholars s while being objective, still do not claim to know what Rumi meant. To write a book and confuse readers about such profound Truth is a disservice to seekers of Truth.
