"This film gradually draws us in, making us slow down and appreciate the rhythm of life on the fell. Rarely do we have access to such lives and it feels like a privilege. It really is a little gem." - Robert Sternberg
Produced and Directed by Janine Myszka, William Park and Meredith Thomas. The Hill Farmer takes us to the Cumbrian fells as we are introduced Joyce King and the traditional fell farming techniques that make this area of the United Kingdom unique.

What a hard working lass. Beautiful place. Would love a place like that to scale down to in my older years.

Really admire the courage and tenacity of this lady!! Its always been my dream to experience life helping out in a small farm like this for a month or two!! Work the day helping out elderly farmers like this, enjoy the local food they provide, chat with the farmers, write my diary and spend the night in the barn house!!

Wonderful! I am having a greet(cry) when I find this sort of film on RU-vid. Brings back wonderful memories to me of my father's father, my papa, who had been a farm hand before going off to World War 2. I have his green fingers/thumbs a bit, but not much of the farming/country knowledge. Thank you to ALL of our quality farmer's who tend the land, keep the animals, steward our countryside xx.

I so admire people like this, especially women. Very inspirational to me. i am her age and have sheep, chickens dogs and ducks and I live in Florida so I don't have to deal with the snow and cold.

This was my childhood on a Loch Lomond farm until around about 1972. Great memories forever. We had 4,000 sheep back then.

My father-in-law used to use those hand sheep shears to edge his lawn. They're sharp and a great tool that automatically goes back to an open position.

I am a farmer s son and I will tell you it's not a easy life 'a farmer doesn't work 9 to 5 and they never retire 'I personally know some farmers in there 90s still working away 'it's not a job 'it's the love of the country side and the fact of being your own boss 'in other words it's a way of life 'not everyone could or want to do it 'unless you're 100 per cent committed 'you will fail 'plus it can be very stressful 'between animals dieing and the weather 'it's not for the faint hearted

We had Galloways on cold hill country in New Zealand in the 1950s and 60s They were never popular there, mainly because of their yellow fat, the housewives didn’t like to buy it, However we used to cross them with a white shorthorn bull, and you got a nice blue offspring, They were hardy little buggers though
@williamhpark
@williamhpark 4 года назад
That's interesting! How suited were they to the New Zealand climate? I know that Galloways have a longer coat (being from west Scotland) to, say, Aberdeen Angus (from east) to cope better with the wetter conditions

William H Park very suited to where we were, the high country of the South Island, it’s very like Scotland I believe, our farm was cold hill country, The cows were out on the hill over winter, none or very little hay was fed to them in winter, Long cold winters, hot summers, the Galloways done a good job on the tussock country
