My photo shoot of the historic Gentry Turbo Eagle Scarab for Speedboat Magazine. Originally built by Tom Gentry for the Miami to New York Endurance Race, it was then leased to Don Johnson (the actor) to race the offshore circuit where he went on to win the 1988 World Championship with Bill Sirois (Throttles) and Gus Anastasi (Navigator).
Retired in 1994 and left to rot in a boat yard for the next 20 years, a Southern California business man purchased the once famous race boat in 2014 and recently completed a 2 1/2 year restoration with Team Archer Marine in Costa Mesa, CA.
With no expense spared, this beautiful boat has been restored back to its original glory, and I was lucky enough to produce the first full feature article on the restoration, which can be seen in the July 2018 issue of Speedboat Magazine, here:

Great history lesson. It's incredible what they did from making a mold to a turn key boat in that amount of time. It's awesome this boat is as it was back in 1985 instead of rotting away in a field somewhere

They did a great job of restoring it. My Dad is Fred Miller and he was the Team Manager for Gentry all those years. He was also the man that built this actual race boat. He also was the brains behind the turbo engines. Not to be rude, but Archer Marine was very incorrect about a lot of the Gentry facts. I just showed this to my Dad. There are a lot more of incorrect facts in this video. If you need any of this cleared up, I will be ore than happy to get the correct answers for you. :) Great photos. Any chance we can see more of the restored Gentry boat? My Dad thought it was so cool.

Hi Christina. Thanks for the feedback. You can see my full feature article in the July 2018 Issue of Speedboat Magazine, here: issuu.com/brettbayne/docs/speedboat_july_2018?e=9079340/63886182 I also consulted Fred Kiekhaefer about the history of the boat, and he didn't raise any flags about the details. Nonetheless, I'm glad you liked the photos and I hope you enjoy the article. Thanks for watching!

Fred K wasn’t around for the build on this. It spent most of its time at the Torrance shop. The team usually took a cat & a V to the races & depending on the water condition : that would dictate what they ran . Fred Miller ran toms operation since the 70’s .

Aloha All, Yes, Fred Miller was the Team Manager, but it was Tom Gentry who designed the Turbos. He was a mechanical engineer who had been building boats since he was a teen. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact myself and I can put you in touch with Norman Gentry.

Oh that boat looks great. My Daughters Dad, Wally Sowins was a mechanic for Gentry. I used to go to the shop. What happened to all the other boats? Gentry would be glad to see his boat looking so sweet!
