One thing that you didn't touch on was the amount of medium size cities in the Northeast Megalopolis. If these cities were isolated on their own, they will be considered major cities. But they are dwarfed by cities like NYC, Philly and DC. New Rochelle, white plains, Newark, Yonkers, Stamford, etc are all dwarfed by NYC

One of the main reasons the Northeast isn't growing as fast as other megalopolises is that these are all VERY old cities and towns with no room left to expand, short of rebuilding from scratch. You could expand into the Seacoast area of New Hampshire (Portsmouth into Manchester/Concord) and the Portland metro in Maine, but that would require 1000% growth in these areas (Portland and Portsmouth would barely qualify as suburbs if they were relocated near Boston, NYC, or Philly).

You missed New haven, which is more in line with the Boswash megalopolis than Hartford. Basically, all towns along the Acela corridor have rather high density, comparable to certain parts of Europe. You could also include Springfield, Hartford, and Albany as outer fringes of the Megalopolis, but the spine is right along Amtrak's NEC. A lot of the cities here were on their growth slope when railroads like the C&O, B&O, Pennsy, New Haven, and NY Central were at their peak, which explains why public transit is still rather reasonable, albeit outdated. Unlike the deep south, most places in the northeast didn't rip out all their transit lines to be replaced with freeways, simply because it wasn't practical to build out so many freeways. If NYC had to rely exclusively on freeways like Houston, then there wouldn't be enough land left over for people to live.

Even the rural parts of the northeast aren't as rural as some other parts of the country. Start out north from Boston, in almost any direction from west-northwest to east-northeast, on a numbered US highway (the Interstates are generally tree-lined except in pretty-big cities) and see how often you go more than 10 miles without passing through at least a village center between Boston and the Canadian border.
@nlpnt
@nlpnt Год назад
Replying to my own comment, for that matter if you're heading in the general direction of Montreal the same thing applies north of the border too, at least along major roads.
@jasonreed7522
@jasonreed7522 Год назад
I think part of that is just settlement patterns, the northeast is the oldest, and was settled when water was everything and in the northeast its everywhere. Most valleys have atleast a trickling stream and basically every waterfall had a saw or grain mill on it to take advantage of the free power. We also tend to settle such that every village is 1 days travel from the last, and in colonial times that was around 10miles. In contrast the west is very dry so alot less water based settlements were made, and the main settlement happened in the age of the railroad where every 100miles a village center was artificially placed to be codependent on the railroad. The west is also just settled later and had alot less time to fill in the way the east did. The end result is the east has a sort of settled rural vibe where you can get away from people but the closest road from any given point is never more than a couple miles. And the west has an empty rural vibe where you can get several days away from "civilization". But also be aware of sample bias if you are conting rural as 10miles between towns on a major road as major roads expressly exist to link existing towns and so have a disproportionate amount of people settled along them. (Otherwise they would be a backroad to link 2 hamlets or a farm to its host village)

@@jasonreed7522 yes. I think of it as the "road that runs from Bristol to Chattanooga in East Tennessee." The people complaining about the inclusion of Richmond, have likely never driven in these areas. There's no doubt that we face enormous challenges, but the people who live here are passionate about making this a better place to live and reclaiming some of the lost prestige of our past as one of the US' greatest cities. Baltimore is a city with many faces; it does have some of the worst neighborhoods in the country, but also some of the best, We're a haven of housing-affordability in the greater DC area, with a diverse economy and high wages. We're somewhat integrated with the rest of the Northeast Corridor, but additional projects in high-speed rail and regional rail services would intertwine us much more closely with DC and allow for our benefits to spread to a greater radius, having the additional benefit of weakening the grasp of our historical racial segregation, which still defines much of daily life for Baltimoreans. Regardless, every time I bring friends and family to Baltimore, they're surprised by how much they like my city.

Great video! I enjoy living in BOSWASH, which in my opinion is basically the MIDDLE ATLANTIC states + SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND states, all of which are relatively small in area and high in population, and are all essentially on or near the coast. I live on Long island near New york city right in the middle of the 1-95 corridor Northeast megalopolis. Its a great place to live, and this video encapsulates that very well. What more could one want in a region? Like you said tons of history and culture in these cities, a nice mix of rural, suburban and urban, efficient transportation systems, and four distinct seasons none of which are THAT severe and extreme( although it can and does happen sometimes(probably the best location climate wise on the east Coast), and lots of great (higher) education institutions and culture abound in this area and region. I'll probably live somewhere in this region for the rest of my life as it meets all of my needs, and then some. Don't know about the inclusion of Richmond, Virginia, to me thats a bit Southern, however, awesome video and please, keep on doing more! :)

The one big negative I had with Boston was the city putting modern things in historic buildings- for example you go into a historic building where they gutted it inside and made a subway station, another which turned into a shopping center. That is removing history not preserving it

I'm from Providence and I think that's really easy to say when you don't come from as historic of a place, if anything I think that's keeping the legacy of the city alive and living it. London and Paris and any other significant European city has had so much renovation and reconstruction but they're still incredibly historic, it's just not realistic for a old dense city to keep up with the sprawling modern glass cities of the south and west and at the same time maintain every inch of history. I think inpart the gutting of an individual building feels so much more problematic to you because you're used to palces with out historical importance where you don't have to give any mind to that sort of thing.
@klausjackklaus

I agree. Virginia these days is not really traditionally Southern in a lot of areas. Demographics and culture have shifted a lot. Richmond isn't terribly Southern and neither is Hampton Roads bc of the military presence and the constant influx of different people. The same goes for Northern Virginia. To me, Virginia feels more Southern in the Southwestern area - places like Roanoke and Bristol.

The southeastern quadrant of the state beginning in Harrisburg, Lancaster, Reading, Philly, Allentown and the suburbs in between are one state probably like 8 or 9 million ppl. The other half of PA west of Harrisburg has more sparsely populated towns. The northern half of PA north of interstate 80 is very rural with the exception of Wilkes Barre/ Scranton, Williamsport and Erie. More than half of PA is state game lands. NY state has a similar dichotomy. The five bureaus, Long Island and Westchester county is a megalopolis in itself but most of the state outside this area is very rural. The same can be said for Virginia as well, western Maryland, West Virginia, New Hampshire, Vermont and western Massachusetts. The northeast has vast stretches of rural areas outside the megalopolis

My main point, however, is that Allentown-Bethlehem MSA with 871K people ranks 68th on MSA list. It is one hour drive from Philly and two hour from NY. It has become one of the largest warehousing areas in the world. With 20-30 miles of massive warehouses directly West of Allentown. And also large warehouses North of Bethlehem. I’ll be honest, just as you can fold Baltimore into Washington you can fold Providence into Boston even more. Its entirely suburbs or cities the whole way through (Brockton, Pawtucket, Attleboro, Fall River), and most of Southern New Hampshire (Manchester, Concord, Portsmouth) are now basically part of the Boston area like Lowell and Lawrence are. The Boston metro is growing so rapidly in that way because its not growing that much in population but the urbanization of more rural areas (turning them into suburbs/exurbs) is massive.
