The history of the Dunedain is a story of decay, a slow descent from glory. Over the years, the once mighty and beautiful city of Annuminas fell to ruin as it's numbered dwindled following the Battle of the Last Alliance and the death of Isildur. In today's episode we'll be exploring the story of Annuminas, from its time as the capital city of Arnor to its fall during the wars against the Witch-King of Angmar.

It was also closer to the Elven kingdoms noticably Gil Galad's own capital as well as Cirdans so it's also possible that is was to also help his people remember that the reason they survived the downfall was because they stayed true to their allegance to Valinor and to being elf friends rather than the kings men and eventually Melkor

Wonder what would have happened if the Númenóreans stayed faithful. What they could have achieved. God Bless.

I think Elenna was blessed at its creation and so goodness and the Faithful flourished, but as is everything in Arda, Morgoth's Ring seeps into the Island and evil spreads throughout the Island. There is no way the Numenorians could have stayed on the path of righteousness. Tar-Palantir tried unsuccessfully to return Numenor to their traditions. If not Ar-Pharazon and Sauron, some other King would have tried to conquer all of Middle Earth.

You made a great point regarding Elendil's choice of Annúminas as his seat. The lake and the short distance to Lindon and Emyn Beraid seem to be a compeling reason, Nenuial was also a Center of population in Eriador since the elder days so, is very possible that the place alredy had a numenorean settlement when Elendil arrived. The abandonment of Annúminas and the relocation of the capital to Fornost goes to show the magnitude of the decline of population in the north, there wasn't that much folk left to make the city inhabitable. On the other hand, with the split of the kingdom, Fornost just had a better geographical location, the name suggest a strong fortify settlement that was located closer to the borders of the realm, this would allow better logistics as Amon Sul, chief matter of debate between the kingdoms, was closer to Fornost

Hey Karl, have you been watching the Rings of Power on Amazon Prime? I'm not sure, but I think maybe one of these cities are shown in the series.

Elendil came ashore at Lindon so Annúminas may have been the closest good spot to build his capitol. It's also possible there was a decent population of Men who came from Númenor to Middle-Earth as colonists and settled in that area, making it easier to build a city there. I find the abandonment of Annúminas to be puzzling. If it had happened when Arnor split into 3 and if it had been located where the borders of 2 or all 3 successor states then I could understand it but as it is, it remains one of those mysteries Tolkien never explained.

Wasn't population decrease due to the wars the reason why they had to abandon a city? Could have happened to Fornost alternatively
@istari0
@istari0 Год назад
@@Crafty_Spirit To my knowledge, Arnor was at peace following the War of the Last Alliance up until it split into three and Annúminas was abandoned before then. Even if it wasn't abandoned until later, Fornost was farther east than Annúminas and thus closer to the borders of Cardolan and Rhudaur. Why would a capital city deeper inside the country be abandoned and the capital moved to a city closer to the borders with hostile countries? It's still a mystery to me.

Actually the first time I remember reading about Nenuial is when Galadriel and Celeborn moved their people out of Lindon and settled near the Lake. I don't know if they built a palace there or not, but it would surprise me if they did. The Dunedain could have just built on to what the Elves had left in their exit for Eregion.🤔
@Enerdhil
@Enerdhil Год назад
@@istari0 Maybe proximity to Amon Sûl was the reason they moved out of Annúminas and to Fornost.

It is possible that Elendil's name means (elf-friend) that he founded this city further west in order to be close to the elves
@Crafty_Spirit

Good idea 👍🏼 I was wondering for a moment why Elendil did not build a city at sea coast. Guess this area was already under the kingship of Gil-Galad, and some distance to the sea was probably good for the Dunedain to face the new reality of living on the continent
@Enerdhil
@Enerdhil Год назад
I think Galadriel moved from Lindon to Lake Evendim and established a colony there. I am not sure if they built a palace near the Lake but it makes sense, they did. Is it possible that the Dunedains simply built on to what Galadriel's people had started and left later to go to Eregion?

Yes I think that Annuminas was a strategic place like you said, close to a lake and connected to a river. It was ideally situated for a capital. Just to point out you made a mistake you said that Fornost is west of Annuminas which I am sure you know is wrong.

I like that your channel has remained consistent in quality over the years. As well as genuinely honest and informative about Tolkien's work. I had to unsubscribe from several Tolkien channels due to them selling out and refusing to denounce rings of trash, the terrible fan fiction that pissed all over Tolkien and his legacy. There are channels calling themselves Tolkien fans while acting as if that nonsense is cannon. Great video. God Bless.

Cheers man. To be honest the way I run my channel is as a passion hobby, and if I feel that I'm not enjoying what I'm doing then there really wouldn't be any point in working on new content. When it came to the Rings of Power I just wanted to watch it as a LOTR fan and give it a fair shot without feeling any obligation to analyze it or create content around it.

Given that Isildur's force marching back to Arnor was wiped out except for 3 men, I would say that Arnor simply never recovered from the loss of men during the War of the Last Alliance.
