God 2007 is still a GOD-TIER year in video gaming. I still think it's the greatest year of releases of all time! Halo 3, BioShock, Mass Effect, Half-Life 2: Orange Box (Team Fortress 2, Portal, and Episode 2 all new releases on that), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Assassin's Creed, and many more. 2007 birthed more huge franchises, or contained the biggest releases of previously established franchises, than any other year I can recall.

This channel is so far above every other channel in terms of quality, production value, narration, and entertaining/interesting topics that I can't believe it's not a series on television or a paid streaming service like Netflix or Hulu. My only wish would be more frequent smaller releases in between larger ones like this. Keep up the great work👍🏽

It's ironic that Assassin's Creed was born because of the narrative limitations of Prince of Persia, considering that nowadays AC has little to do with Assassins and even less with their Creeds. Goes to show the massive gap in creative integrity between old and current Ubisoft.

In 2008 I knew my christmas present was going to be Assassin's Creed. So when my mom the day before christmas left home, I found my present opened it and took the disc out and swapped it for another game. Played it the whole night on christmas eve. Good times

This was an incredible retrospective and easily my favourite GVMERS video so far! I predominantly played AC during the late PS3/360 era and have been thinking of replaying the Ezio saga. I also got around to trying Origins not long ago but it didn't click with me due to its RPG-centric design, although I am tempted to go back and give it another shot.

Assassin’s Creed black flag was and still is my favorite AC game, I’ve finished it so many times I lost count. The feeling of adventure while traveling the high sea while your crew sings shanties is unmatched in my opinion. And the fast paced hand to hand combat combined with excellent ship combat is so addicting. By far the best AC game in my opinion and easily the best pirate game ever made

One of my favorite game franchises, staying home from school one day sick when AC1 was new and I was around 12. AC2 the whole collection (and actually I think Brotherhood is the best) and Black Flag are by far my favorites. Kinda enjoying origins as well, but its not the same. I am also one of the few ones I guess that liked the "irl" segments with Desmond in AC2 and the whole thing with the company in Black Flag, I always wanted to go back to uncover some new secret or detail about the mystery.

I remember watching the trailer for AC 2 a few days after finishing the first game, ever since, I've been through each game to 100%, I saw all the controversy, peaks and valleys this franchise had, and despite losing it's original identity I still enjoy the titles for their historic rich environments. Can't say that I fully enjoy the narrative as much as I did when Desmond was around, the mystery surrounding the game was shredded with 3, but I'm still curious to see where this franchise goes next, it's a shame Ubisoft is such a horrible company. Thank you for such a long and enjoyable journey! It truly brought some nostalgia and memories with it.

I think Discovery Tour was a pretty good addition, albeit late into the series. While historical knowledge always played a role, these documentary styled sections were a mixture of cool & informative on stuff the team researched for the games. In execution though I vibed better with Origins' version of it than the way Discovery Tour was redesigned in Odyssey.

in my PERSONAL opinion, i loved every single AC game up until they went full on RPG. and ik a lot of fans seem to like Origins but it’s just not the style of an AC game that i fell in love with back in 2007

AC 2, AC Brotherhood, AC Black Flag, AC origins are absolute classics and epics to me. So many strong memories of those games with superb storytelling. Adore Jesper Kyds music playing at the start from the original AC game, still great. Jesper Kyds music is the most AC sounding composer with memorable epic music that transported you to the period, Austin Wintorys Syndicate ost was great too, Sarah Schachners Origins ost was also superb with memorable tracks

The real Assassin vs Templar battle is in the fanbase itself Old school vs RPG... I'm appreciative of both. I just love this franchise.

This channel literally feels like mainlining nostalgia! I just love the way these docs never fail to conjure up a flood of forgotten memories from life throughout middle school, high school, and early college. Just for reference, I graduated HS at 18 in 2002. I'm reminded of how special it felt to experience genre defining games for the first time with my closest friends, as well as when we discovered hidden gems that never got the love that they deserved. These are memories that I truly cherish, and always will. Also, I need to say that the research and production value on display here is really quite impressive. Please keep it up and continue feeding our collective addiction to nostalgia :-D

Its impressive how this brand is still relevant after 15 years from release. Remember it beeing something new and fresh back in 2007.

The Altair and Ezio trilogy made me love and the series and made my junior high fun. Sadly after 3 the story (specialy the modern day) fall into dissaray because they fired the original writers (they killed the desmon duh) . I've still have fun playing those other AC games like Black Flag, Unity (latest update) and Origins but they've lost the touch they had during Ezio trilogy.

Unity ended up being a great game. About 3-4 months after release I bought a digital download code for the game for around $5 off eBay. The big patches were released by then and I loved the game!

Rogue was such an underrated gem. It refined some of the already existing mechanics of black flag, and gave us a new perspective. We finally got to see things from the role of an Assassin turned Templar in a sympathetic way that gave us more insight on their ideology. It boasted great side content, a connecting story to III, IV, and Unity, helping to bridge the gaps, and provided solid content and expansion to the gameplay. I wish it got the recognition it deserved for being such a quality spinoff title. Not to mention it reveals that Shay was a rather important character to the overall narrative of those games who was silently working behind the scenes.

11:00 I've got to say, I don't understand all the hate the sci-fi elements always got. The first game frankly needed MORE of it to really hammer it home, and the twist was great (though pretty clearly telegraphed.) Then with AC2 I unlocked every single thing so I could see that little Adam and Eve animation and learn about the precursors, and I loved the stuff in 3 also! They just didn't put enough work into the modern stuff imo, the idea was great. SPOILERS: Also, killing of Desmond in AC3 was an unbelievable STUPID idea. It left the modern day story floundering, and as far as the story goes, they never really killed him off! You're still playing within his memories in basically every other AC game that followed, but now they just hardly talk about the modern day stuff. That whole subplot got a backseat to everything else, but they're still doing everything WITHIN Desmond's memories. So if he's still effectively INVOLVED in every single game that follows, did you REALLY kill him off? Or did you really just get rid of his character model?

Damn you, GVMERS! You made me recollect how much I loved Ezio trilogy so I just bought ultimate editions of Origins and Odyssey. It's dirt cheap on Steam right now but still, Ubisoft owes you one.

I loved the Assassin’s Creed games. The revelation that your seeing everything as a simulation blow my mind at the time. The beauty of the renaissance period, the sea battles of the new world and revolution in the old. Like a lot of others, we got burnt out and Origins brought a new vigour to the game but Odyssey quickly ruined all that. Ubisoft made a gorgeous world, that was bloated and bland. Stepping away from telling a great, tight, story to stretching it out long past the point of being followable. This pushed me away from the games. Ubisoft has clearly lost their way and what made AC great.

For me the two videogames that remarkably gave Assassins Creed franchise a properly name and popularity in videogames industry were Assassins Creed II and Assassins Creed Brotherhood both with excellent two main stories Enzio’s, Desmond’s and the two videogames had both brilliant gameplays. One of the biggest & best gamr series ever no matter how many changes & editions evry part made.... many times the launched with issues like a loy of games do but the improve more evry time & bring fresh gameplay.... in valhalla i was able to play 3x the amount of hours near 400 including all dlc this is insane i do play slow pace & 100% evrything.

I really enjoyed the assassins creed games. I started off with 1 way back when and it had it's problems but it was definitely a good starting off point for a huge universe. 2, brotherhood, and revelations were amazing. And I know I have heard a lot of people claim those ones are usually their favs. which is easy to see. I also enjoyed them a lot. So many fun things to do and explore in those games, with a likeable character, interesting story, and amazing places to see. Then 3 came along and I really didn't like it all that much. The main character seemed kinda bland, and the US colonial setting is awful for a place to try to be an assassin. Just planes as far as the eye can see with single story houses with the occasional two story or church. Having to run/travel all the time from point to point just made it worse. The story must have been forgettable since I don't remember it though I know I played through and beat the game. One of it's saving graces was the naval battles which was really fun. I consider 3 where the franchise kinda started to go down hill. I played AC rouge which was forgettable but fun naval combat. I then took a break from the games cause they just kept pumping them out way to quickly and clearly not polished up enough. The series also seemed a bit fatigued so I waited and never got around to playing black flag, or syndicate though I have heard enough good things about it (the past year I ended up getting both for PS4 that I plan to play eventually when I get a PS5 maybe). But then when the fire happened at Notre Dame and Ubisoft gave away copies of Assassins creed unity I grabbed it cause why not free game. I had seen all the meme posts when it released showing how badly the glitches and stuff were because they rushed to release it instead of making sure to polish it up. I didn't get my hopes up but figured at the time its free why not try it out since it's been out for a while now maybe they polished it up enough. Oh boy am I glad I gave it a chance cause I think it is either as good or better than AC 2, brotherhood, revelations. The main character is likeable, story is interesting, setting is amazing, and at the time after enough polishing the game ran so great. I only encountered a few bugs/glitches like previous assassin creed games. Plus the multiplayer was pretty popular at the time cause so many people claimed the free game. It really was/is a fun assassin creed game. Unfortunately ubisoft because of them rushing to push out the games and having unity flop so bad because of so many bugs and glitches they decided they would change the whole way the games play and make them more into RPG games. When I started seeing origins, and then Odyssey, and now finally Valhalla it's clear I wont like the way assassin creed has went. They kinda decided having making mistakes like killing off Desmon Miles and changing up the games they kinda alienated some of their player base. As well as the micro-transactions. Some people like the new games and that's great for them but for me they just don't feel like the assassin creed games that I like anymore. So Unity after it's polishing turned out to be one of the best assassin creed games and yet we wont get a follow up probably ever. And ubisoft is making things even worse by alienating their player base by recently making it so DLC for old games wont be available even if you paid for it, as well as multiplayer even for some games that are still available to purchase right now which you will lose out on in a few months. Plus their push for NFT junk and micro-transactions. I have no plans to support ubisoft anymore and haven't for a while. Which is to bad cause the assassin creed games were fun.

Hell of an intro there. How long have you guys worked on that? Been a strong fan of Assassin's Creed since the first game then-exclusive release on PS3. Kinda disappointed you didn't bring up the RPG elements in Unity but, yeah, those bugs really took all the attention. Odyssey really annoyed my with character select and dialogue tree. It doesn't make sense in the world of the game. And the former was truly pointless. I'm worried about the path the games are following now. If they're good games, I'll still play them but I have no rush to play them anymore.

So excited for this. Been playing through all of the games again, and this is exciting to see

I have played all AC games, (except Rogue) some of them multiple times, and I love them all.

Interesting detail about Assassin's Creed: Syndicate. Jacob Frye was meant to be the only main character, having a personality that combined himself and his twin. Evie Frye was only added to include more women in the games, and took the intelligent and fast thinking major traits Jacob had, leaving him with his recklessness and strength as his major traits

Well assassin's Creed black flag is one of my favorites, putting so many hours into it and the combat and just running around fighting enemies

After Ezio's trilogy the series changed for the worse in my opinion. AC3 and Black Flag still had the core elements that made the franchise unique, but it was leaning towards action and open world and progressively abandoned the hiding in plain sight mechanics to become an action RPG with generic stealth elements. I wish the series had remained focusing in historic cities instead of open worlds, playing in Rome, Florence, Venice, Acre, Jerusalem, to me that was one of the most important features of the game, bringing old cities back to life again. Egypt and Greece felt too big and Athens felt small and not as memorable.

I think that theme music that you play in the introduction of the video is the best assassin‘s creed theme music and one of my favorite game franchise theme music in all of gaming despite the fact that assassin’s creed doesn’t even land in my top 10 favorite game!?!? They always fall just slightly short of being great…. But that didn’t stop me from getting every single one of them minus the 2D side Scroller Creeds..

Amazing well put together doc, as always. One small correction though; Darby McDevitt did indeed return to Ubisoft and AC in late 2021, after a brief break. Not sure what he's working on presently, but it's most likely something related to a future AC.

I feel this franchise has greatly overstayed it's welcome. Patrice had a beginning, middle and ending for the series, but the end never came. After AC3 it just kept going, with every new entry further diluting the core concepts that made AC what it was and excuses to call what's essentially a completely different game "Assassin's Creed".

Awesome stuff. I remember when my roommate got a PS3 on release and he had to go out of town literally the day after he set it up in the living room. So for the next week I played the only PS3 game he had bought, Assassins Creed. That week made me a lifelong fan. Since I play these games in their entirety I do have to take breaks, for example I loved Ezio's games, but never touched AC3, but then I 100%'ed Black Flag, etc. Just so happened I played "the best" ones.

One of the most promising franchises ever, and they've just let it go. ACII is an absolute masterpiece, they stayed true to history when possible and made interesting links between history and the lore of the series when they couldn't. This shit was magical, then they ruined it.

You can use the hidden blade to clear entire combat encounters in AC1, you just have to use throws as your primary method of offense instead of normal attacks. It was the only weapon that could kill anyone either on the ground or attacking you in one hit, and start assassination chains on taunting or cowering enemies to induce additional fear, the original version of the fight or flight system. In many ways, it was more powerful than any other weapon I'm sorry, *what?* The new counter system began in AC3 and ended in Rogue, not the other way around. There are four main counter moves, but the ways you can utilize them give you dozens of options. Looks like it was written five months before the game came out, so maybe the decision was reversed late in development, or perhaps their source just had no idea what they were talking about. Misinformation spreading after these games come out is incredibly common thanks to their poor or nonexistent tutorialization, but this happening before it even releases is very strange

Ubisoft. That team should have been worried about making a comprehensive game with the writing it was known for, not virtue signaling and trying to get as much money out of the players as possible. Where was the advocacy against that? How the series started out so great and now such a soulless reflection of those removed from it is fitting. They used to care about what was in the game and how to make it work, not things that had nothing to do with it and how to insert it.

I’m so sad about what happened with Unity. I didn’t play it until a year after launch, and the majority of the bugs had been fixed. It is still my favorite Assassins Creed of all time. The combat was actually challenging and rewarding, which incentivized stealth to avoid conflict, the game is beautiful, and the detective missions were amazing quality, they reminded me of LA Noire. Anyone I talk to about it only remembers the bugs.
