I think he could've included some other movements though. Like he included DSO, but their non-influential stuff? So many people do this dissonant DSO type of bm nowadays, but it wasn't really a factor. Similar to BaN.
@oldgoattheantichrist3468 a lot of bands now sound like emperor, but now almost EVERY new BM band is influenced or sounds like Darkthrone and Burzum, they changed it from stripped back thrash to dissonant depressing atmosphere driven noise
In Norway people listen to Mayhem AND Burzum (but most importantly Darkthrone). Are you a 14 year old fanboy who just discovered black metal after seeing Lords Of Chaos?

Really interesting to see the evolution through time and how catchy and rock'n'roll where the early years, and how it's getting more "complicated" and faster tempos in the recent years, even tho great riffs too... Good job mate compiling this!
listening to this xmas day.... I remember when I bought the bathory album way back in 1985.... the cover art scared the heck out of me.... getting a tape and some magazines from some kid in norway....around the same time, took like 6 months to get to me in texas still have those copies somewhere... slayer magazine
Im pleasently surprised that you included KAT on this list. Not many people outside of Poland know them. It's a shame, because they wrote music on higher level than many well known bands . Thank you!
@@maxek46 from KAT? ofc Metal and Hell album, but if you dont afraid Polish language that you should check every album. Especially I recommend Oddech Wymarłych Światów, Bastard and Róże Miłości Najchętniej Przyjmują Się Na Grobach.
@@maxek46 Yes, with pleasure. 1. From album "Metal and Hell" (english version of album "666") song: "time of revenge". It's only one in English, but it's not as great as 2 and 3 for me. 2. From album "Oddech wymarłych światów" (en. "Breath of extinct worlds") songs: "Bramy żądz" (Gates of lust), "Porwany Obłędem" (Possessed by Madness). This is best album in my opinion if you would like to listen to the one whole album. 3. From album "Bastard" - "Zawieszony sznur" ("Hanging rope" my favourite song!), "Piwniczne widziadła" (Basement phantoms) 4. From album "...Róże miłości najchętniej przyjmują się na grobach" - song Odi profanum vulgus. I dont like this album very much, but the one song is great. 5. There are also albums: "Ballady" (en. Ballads - more slower, melancholic songs, maybe not so interesting for non polish people), "Szydercze zwierciadło" (I like it but maybe not so great for others 2 i 3 is a must - really great peaces with lot of fantastic thrash metal riffs and compositions, but they are only in Polish. But beware. There was a conflict and the band was split, so there are two "Kat" now and one of them is very weak. So you can find a few bad albums under this name. The one listed by me are original Kat albums, so better stick to them.
It's so amazing to me that Jon from dissection was writing riffs as modern sounding as "where dead angels lie" before gorgoroth put out Antichrist Not talking bad on gorgoroth love them, just insane how ahead of it's time storm of the lights bane was. RIP
I severly miss Christ Agony. Unholyunion, Deamoonseth act II and Moonlight act III are absolute masterpieces, that are not even widely known in Poland.

Fantastic compilation. I have to admit I did not expect Polish KAT at all, mostly because I always thought they are not even remotely known abroad (predominantly because of the language barrier). You made my day, Sir (even more, I was born in 1986)

Never heard of Drudkh before, very happy to having listened all, some familiar, some not. My personal favourites (or at least my head started banging the keyboard unvoluntarily) 1991 and 2009. Now onto searching more of Drudkh... Well done Sir!
After listening to this, it seems like black metal got better and just keeps getting better overall. You did not even choose a lot of really awesome bands and most were more 'mainstream' in black metal terms, but still this genre is clearly progressing and becoming better. Although it seems to do well when cross-pollinating with other genres, I don't think "pure" death metal is similarly improving on average year after year.
I very much got the impression from this video that once the 90's were over, Black Metal was too and now it's just variations in stuff that's 20 years old.
The whole beginning I was like “man I really hope he picks Lost Wisdom for Burzum” and was delighted to see you did. Probably my all time favorite black metal riff
I like the really slow part from "a sad lost forgotten spirit" or the hellish part after its quiet for a moment on "feeble screams from forests unknown. Hell I love that whole album

Great list - I wore my DMDS hood while listening. The best song on your list overall champion is “where dead angels lie” Forever Dissection all awesome songs anyway... the Marduk album was the runner up just for pure military awesomeness
Unique selection of riffs! I'm not sure if I've commented this before, but how about like different riff styles in black metal? Like the diatonic riffs of Sargeist, the ringing open bass strings of Mgla, the deathy style of Mayhem, speedy chords of Marduk, clean riffs, rung out chords of Watain, or even the odd shapes of Deathspell Omega

Great job picking the bands. I know some people would prefer different albums from bands in different slots, but I think you constructed it pretty well. Was gonna be upset if Emperor wasn’t in 93 though haha. Love that you picked Akercocke. Also Mgła for 2019 is awesome, one of the best modern BM bands right now. Mayhem’s 2019 album was pretty damn good too.
Only thing I was a bit bummed about was the selection of the deathspell omega song! using some of their later stuff from Paracletus would have been cool to see. Great video though!
No songs from the DmDs-era of Mayhem??! I mean "Freezing Moon" and "Buried By Time and Dust" were composed by Euronymous himself in 1989 which is really goddamn early in terms of actual black metal. Those riffs alone, especially the tremolo picked guitar kickstarted the genre as a whole, since everything before that was either thrash or death metal
