Dueling Dragons was a set of B&M inverted rollercoasters located in the Lost Continent section of Islands of Adventure. The attraction quickly gained notoriety as well as a sizable following among coaster enthusiasts shortly after it's debut in the park. This video compiles the attraction's 18 years worth of development and updates, leading up to it's recent closure.

Wow I never realised how much better the theming was on this ride before it got rethemed to Harry Potter. That original entrance and queueline is pretty awesome

pulpnonfiction Oh please, the Lost Continent was and still is the lamest area out of the whole two parks. Im glad a word as immersive as harry potter took over more than half of it. i have to admit the themeing was better before it became a harry potter themed coaster but still everything else in The Lost Continent was completely shit and so boring to look at. Especially that dumbass Poseidon Fury show

It's such a shame too. It had arguably the best original theming of any ride that Universal had! Not to mention the ride itself was one of the best coasters I've ever been on personally. I hate that such a great ride is the latest victim of the new theme park philosophy of media franchises invading every possible place they can. US/IoA and Disney will keep doing this too, ridding themselves of original concepts for rides and ramming franchises down our throats. In Orlando, I think the last original ride (not tied to a movie/TV show) was Expedition Everest in Animal Kingdom, and that was opened in 2007! Not even theme park rides are safe from the Blockbuster Mentality!

I was and still am so devastated that I never got to ride this. I was always fascinated by this ride since reading about it's opening. The dueling loops have been one of my favorite PC wallpapers since it opened. RIP Dueling Dragons :(

19 years I waited to go back to Florida and I finally had the chance to go on this ride. Went on it 6 times in a week once we heard it was closing. It will be missed.

This ride and the hulk were the best two amusement park attractions i have ever been on. Lucky enough to have hit the park on a not so busy day in 2010 where me and my brother got many many repeat rides on both dueling dragons and the hulk. Really unforgettable day. Will forever miss these rides, i don't think i have ever been on anything as thrilling as the straightaway leading up to the loops. Absolutely thrilling and incredible. Too bad it couldn't last, glad i got to experience it when i did!

Very bittersweet. It was the first huge roller coaster I went on so its sad to see it go, but I hope whatever replaces it exceeds my expectations! All the new rides they've added for Harry Potter are all absolutely spectacular, so I know it will be fantastic.

I think it should be longer in my opinion. Like maybe one more intense dark section of the ride would have been nice, I think that's my only complaint. Other than that the technology and screen play the use in that ride is spectacular!

The following is a true story. This ride is great, I'm sad to see it go--however--in the summer of 2001 I went to Universal for a trip. I decided it was time to slay both of these winged beast. I can't recall whether it was Fire or Ice, it all happened so fast, but as the ride was coming to an end and the air breaks engaged--the sheer force caused my young 13 year old self to shift forward! In turn, caused immense pressure on my nutsack--yes--my NUTSACK! The pain was excruciating. As the safety bars finally raised up, I walked a few feet away from the dragons and fell down face first, wincing in pain and clutching my crouch. My dad stood over me a scoffed "what the hell are you doing, boy??" But as he further examined me, he knew my cries were legitimate. I could not walk right for days, and I had to switch from boxers to briefs! (doctor's orders.) For nearly 15 years I warned travelers of the dreaded dragon's bite! Yet, I was determined to obtain my revenge. And that day came, in early October of 2015. Yes, their names had changed (probably trying to hide the reputation of being violent ball fondlers) but I knew it was them! First, it was Fire. Through twists and turns, my mighty sword and stones withstood its mighty blaze. FOR IT WAS SLAIN! However, the battle was not yet won. Ice! Perhaps not as fast--but stronger than its red brother. It had already claimed a victim as I awaited my turn! Its dreaded cold and frozen ones weary traveler's innards causing it to spew a deathly vomit all over the concourse! Its grow echoed through the castle with a pompous rumble---another one bites the dust. It was finally my turn. I climbed onto Ice and we shot into the wind like a blizzard. Inward and outward, inverted and subverted I thought it would never end! As we circled back to the castle, I knew that it was my time to strike. I braced myself for the air breaks--I was strong--I was ready--for my aim was true! My package was reinforced steel as it were Myrthril forged from the cauldron of Merlin himself! I clenched my eyes shut, awaited the impact and---nothing. No pain, no tears. Only, laughter. FOR I HAVE WON! I HAD SLAIN THE DUELING DRAGONS AND MY BALLS FINALLY HAD THEIR REVENGE. And now, for their time in the sun was glorious indeed, the dragons have been condemned to an eternal sleep. Some say its for our protection, others say its for theirs, when truly---its for--well--licensing. BUT ALAS! A formidable enemy it may have been, and at one time I even coined them as--NEMESIS. Yet The Dueling Dragons will forever sleep, as both a horrid and wonderful memory for me. I will truly miss them. As for my fellow coaster enthusiast.....watch your nuts.

I grew up in Central Florida and spent so much of my childhood at Universal. I'm out of state for college now and for some reason as soon as I heard that Universal background music I nearly broke down in tears from the sudden nostalgia rush. I still go a few times a year when I come home so I have no idea why it hit me so hard but it's just one of those things I guess

A little scary at first but a great ride! The theming/backstory must not have been that great as I remember none of this. Spoiler alert: The two near misses are wonderful, worth sitting in front for. It almost hits the castle wall and then...barrels down the track right toward the oncoming other coaster. Huh? We just can't crash as the last passengers got off. But here we are going straight down a fixed track toward each other, wow! The genius of having an overhead track, you can't see that it loops skyward for each coaster just before a crash.

When I was at Universal during a company outing, my room mate and I stayed until closing. The park was emptying and we rode Dueling Dragons 12 times continuously until we got kicked out. I'll never forget the last few rides. The Moon was full and it was clear skies. Looking out over the park and then riding it at night we a thrill.

Awesome video. One thing I really don't like about Universal is their propensity to close classic attractions. And that queue was the best queue ever. So atmospheric. So incredibly well themed. As an example of their attention to detail I once found myself alone in the catacombs where it was creepily silent...except for the disembodied whispers of the skeletons. Something you ordinarily would never notice.

I unfortunately never got to see this roller coaster as Dueling Dragons and missed that amazing queue. But I did ride it as Dragon Challenge and I have to say I loved it so much. It was good I did because the Forbidden Journey and Escape from Gringotts had criminal waiting times, while Dragon Challenge had 15 min at most (on the last week of December!). It was one of the only HP attractions in which you could use the Express Pass but you hardly needed it, even when Hulk was taken down and Dragon Challenge remained the only thrilling ride at IOA. I went to Universal and IOA again last December to ride the Hulk roller coaster for the first time and Hollywood’s RIP Ride Rock It (again) and neither of them truly compare to the intensity of Dragon Challenge. My knees were wobbling every time I got off and as I walked to the short cut to ride again. Hulk and Rock It are fun, but not as intense. When I saw the construction site after getting off the Hogwarts Express I almost cried.

As someone who rode the ride in 2016 I found it amazing! I went on the ride 7 times but as the queue was always very short. Its a pity to see this ride close and I wish I could have went on it when it was dueling dragons

These were some of the first "real" roller coasters I ever went on, and I went on it so much when I had a Season Pass back in 2007. I didn't even know they were closed until you said it in this video. Then when you cut to footage of it party dismantled I actually started crying. There wasn't even anything wrong with them, why would they take them down? This is how it felt when Club Penguin shut down, but unironically.

I'm a huge Harry Potter fan but I think the original queue was so much better. It terrified me as a child. The dueling was so awesome. It made waiting for front row worth it.

Every time I thought of Universal in general, and I always thought this was an extremely iconic ride. It's such a blow to know that THIS coaster, of all of the others, is going to be removed. I was sure that it would operate for decades to come, but I guess I was wrong.

Had a feeling somebody would bring this up. The main reason I didn't mention the apparent connection was because the most information I could really find on it was just rumor and speculation, really nothing concrete. Not to worry, though. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting another chance to discuss Beastly Kingdom soon enough. ;)

JokerL1000 It was a planned land for Disney's Animal Kingdom about fantasy creatures (like dragons and unicorns) that got scrapped by Disney likely due to financial issues, as Disney was dealing with disappointing returns from Disneyland Paris, leading to many promising Imagineering projects being canceled. So, it's rumored that Imagineers started taking jobs from the rapidly-growing Universal and took the Beasty Kingdom ideas with them, creating the "Lost Continent" section of Islands of Adventure. Now, Pandora sits in the same place where Beastly Kingdom was planned to be, and most of Universal's Lost Continent has been replaced with Harry Potter.

I wss drug on this ride in 99' when I was 11 years old. My love of inverted coasters began after I rode it. I rode it 5 times that day because the line was only 15 minutes long.

I went on the blue side twice and didn’t go on the red cuz the line was longer. I regret it so much. But there are other coasters that got taken down that I never got to ride cuz I was whimpy. I feel your pain smh.

It's so sad to see it go. I'm surprised that they didn't try to sell this coaster to another theme park. An easy huge park booster for any park to pick it up. I know it takes up an insane amount of land but I'm sure some park has the space for a well running pair of B&Ms.

This makes me so sad! I had the joy of visiting Islands of Adventure in 2000 and dueling dragons was my favorite ride! My brother and I hopped back and forth like 5 times between the two dragons in a row

Gawd I miss Dueling Dragons. I'm glad I got to ride on each coaster more than once, and in the front row. I can still remember the sensation of almost crashing into the other coaster. Good times. 😔

Lucky that I got a chance to ride this before they stopped "dueling" and ultimately before the demise of the ride. Awesome ride! It was the coaster that made me like coasters.

This was such a great ride, one of my favorites at IOA, I only rode it when it was Dragon Challenge so I never got to experience the queue when it was Dueling Dragons. It seems very likely that this is going to the scrapyard, which angers me because this is the first B&M coaster to be removed permanently without new track like Hulk was, and the track still had some great years left in it. I am worried what Universal will bring as they just constantly milk up Harry Potter, I know it's like their most money maker, but come on there are other franchises that Universal needs to give better love to. Universal needs to slow down a bit, they are closing too many attractions way too fast.

I rode it as Dueling Dragons in 1999. I really loved it, but it's been so long. It looks like they closed this one relatively quickly without enough time for people to make travel plans to ride it before it closed. What a shame. I wish they would at least sell it to someone else.

Gabrielle Valentino the foundation issue happens because they didn't run them as a dueling coaster. Originally the forces counter balanced each other. After they started running separate they constantly shifted back and forth destroying their foundation...😭

I absolutely loved the original Lost Continent. I religiously followed the progress of IOA since I first experienced the Preview Center. I bought my first AP back then and was fortunate enough to be able to visit IOA during the soft opening. The queue alone was an attraction in and of itself, the first immersive and magnificent queue Ive ever experienced. I got to experience Dueling Dragons as it was originally conceived and for that I am thankful and will always cherish those days back in 1999.

I chickened out when I had the chance to ride Dueling Dragons/ Dragon Challenge. I'll be kicking myself for the rest of my life.

just found out that hagrid’s moterbike adventure replaced this amazing ride. still a great ride, but dueling dragons was just pure awesomeness.

This was my favorite roller coaster I’ve ever ridden. I rode it 10 years ago before the re-theme and was hoping to ride it again under the Harry Potter theming. I’ve been saving for a trip to Orlando next year. Did not know it had been closed. I’m a little heartbroken. I rode this with my dad, who just died kind of recently. I might not even want to go to Islands of Adventure if this coaster isn’t there anymore.

It was my favourite ride at islands of adventure but the last time I went was in 08. I didn't even know the theme had changed or that they stopped duelling...and now I find out it was closed, doesn't exactly make me want to go back :( at least the last time I saw it was before all those pathetic changes...

I remember being completely entranced by this ride when I was a kid. All I had to go off of was a small, grainy black and white photo, but it still looked like the greatest thing ever. I'm sad to hear it was torn down before I could ever ride it, but what are you gonna do, I suppose. Thank you for such an informative video, very well done.

It had nothing to do with Harry Potter. Rollercoasters run on a contract (hence why the Hulk had to be rebuilt) and Dragon Challenge wasn’t hitting any wait times higher than a 10. Closing day it hit around a 30 (at least when I was there), which is awfully low for any attraction.

That's not why the ride was closed. That is why they removed the dueling aspect, however. The ride had simply run it's course.

I went on dueling dragons back in 2008. I was 9 and scared of roller coasters that went upside down. My parents made me go on it and I cried hysterically the entire time because it scared me. I wish I would’ve had a second chance to ride it because now that I’m older I love all roller coasters!

Wow!! I still can’t believe that they’re getting rid of it. That makes me so mad. As everyone has said, and this goes double for me. This amazing set of coasters more specifically the Fire side was along with the Hulk one of the first real amazingly huge coasters that I got to go on. I decided to wait until my little brother was a little older to ride Ice. Now, I’ll never get that chance. Good bye Dueling Dragons. R.I.P. You were to special for this world. You brought many people for many years so much joy, with your near misses and amazing inversions! You helped me and I’m sure many others to become Coaster Enthusiasts! So thanks for that. I will forever miss you. I hope Universal realizes the grave mistake that they have made. Good bye old friend.

I honestly had a fit the second I learned the launch was changed. My best friend and I used to go to Univeral on a bi-weekly basis JUST to ride certain rides. Dueling Dragons was always the HILIGHT of our trips and it's honestly a HUGE part of my childhood. I DESPISED The re-skin which hurt because I'm a Harry Potter fan... but they killed the lost continent. Rip dueling dragons, you were my favorite dragons. The only coaster I get excited about now is The Mummy ._.;;

I went on dueling dragons a LOT before the harry potter re-vamp and then once or twice after it turned into a ride for the harry potter map around it. The waiting area was honestly SO disappointing for how they changed the decor from before the Harry Potter re-vamp. I LOVE the Harry Potter universe and the like but it was such a let down with the wait area. They made it so dang simplistic and even for Harry Potter fans, I didn't find it nearly as engaging as before the re-vamp. I wasn't aware they closed the ride down in favor of building a new Harry Potter themed ride but I'm honestly pissed. It was one of the best rides in Islands and Adventure (right up there with the Hulk ride).

I LOVED THIS RIDE!! I had two distinct memories from riding this coaster and both on the same day. While waiting in the Ice Track, I was siting on the wooden railing and slid against it while moving in the line and ended up ripping my pants. 😂 Then while riding, my bladder let out a couple drops on me too. 😂😂😂 I’ll miss this ride so much! Thanks for the memories.

I worked there for a few years. One of the best jobs I've ever had. Train 3 on fire side was named the destroyer. If someone came back puking or with a nose bleed. It would always be on the destroyer

Dueling Dragons is in my top 5 all time rides Ive ever ridden, and it goes down as my #1 for overall experience. No other ride Ive ever seen or been on got you so hyped for it as you waited in line, and the decoration and story behind it are incredible. Ill never forget my rides on it when it was Dueling Dragons and anything they do to change it will only make it worse. "Dragon Challenge" has to be one of the worst names for a ride Ive heard. I took more pictures, bought more merchandise for it than any other coaster in my life. It will always be one of my favorites!

What?!?! I didn't even know it closed! I'm in shock. I'm planning a vacation in March and I'm just terribly upset they would remove this ride. Glad I got to ride it in 2016 though! I really feel like the bazaar just outside of Hogsmeade is really lacking any substance. Couldn't they just expand down that way and leave the Dragons alone. Ugh. :'(

i used to go on both coasters multiple times every time i went to IoA, my fav was the blue dragon, and i have a pin of the original ride. tbh i was sad to see it changed to the harry potter version, but the new props and such were pretty neat to see. i was wondering why they changed the timing of the dragons!!! thank you for going into that, it sucks that it happened, but i feel better knowing WHY now. frick i didn't even know it got shut down, i'm really sad to see it go. i hope i enjoy whatever replaces it, they have very big shoes to fill.

Got to ride Dueling Dragons in 2000 and it was the most memorable experience. I don't even remember Spiderman. I was only 10 so this is impressive. Great video!

Dueling Dragons was one of if not my favorite coaster when I was younger. I had season passes and would go to Universal almost every weekend, and always looked forward to riding it. Such as shame the ride is forever gone and now only a memory...

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!! My family & I went to universal when I was about 5 or 6 and I’ve always specifically remembered a ride about two dragons that were fighting each other. The One was red and the other was blue. I remember my older brother & sister wanting to ride it and I think my mom said no since the lines were so long. Thank you for proving I’m not crazy and this really was a ride there! Lol

Speaking of racing coasters, the Racer in Kings Island used to have one train face forward and one face backwards. The two tracks were essentially mirrored to each other, the only difference was the trains. Sadly they changed it to both trains facing forward and no longer puts emphasis on the racing aspect of the rid. So now its just a generic wooden coaster

I worked Harry Potter And The Escape From Gringotts in 2014 and Dudley Do Rights Rip Saw Falls in 2013 but I remember Dueling Dragons and the IOA theme song is a masterpiece itself. Great video man.

Went on dualing dragons in 2007. What a thrill passing the other carriage. Went on it 2017, they no longer pass each other. You don't see the other carriage during the ride. The ride to the left is much smoother and so better. So go left.

I had no idea this was gone until today when I watch a ride challenge video and disnt see it in the challenge. I'm so glad I had the experience to ride it when the dragons were still dueling. You couldn't go wrong with fire or ice.

I liked this ride a lot but it seemed to suffer from being too far out of the way because there was never a line. Keep in mind there was a very empty gap where velocicoaster is now and that side of the park seemed to cater to calmer attractions. People got stuck in front of the park with Hulk and Spiderman. Considering this really is a true family park I wouldn't be surprised if older memebers of the family got tired and never got to that part. Harry Potter works in that area because it draws people to go straight there. Having a link to the other park also helps get traffic to that area.

Wish I could've ride it back In the day. I went to Universal/Island in 2019 and got to ride Hagrids coaster but this seemed like much more thrilling and my kind of setting for a ride

I got to ride in 2003 and I was terrified at first they held us at the top for what seemed minutes before they dropped us into the duel, once I opened my eyes it was one of the best experiences of my life still

Truly going to miss this ride, it was one of my favorite rides of all time and I kind of doubt whatever Universal puts to replace it will be anywhere near as awesome or fun as what it was, smh it's truly a shame it is gone.

Great video. Going to really miss this ride. At least I got to ride it once when it was still dueling. I paid my last respects in August with my last ride.
