In a little over a decade and a half, we went from Sargon, which could take up to half an hour to make a move and play at a strictly intermediate level, to WChess, Fritz, and Deep Blue beating nearly everybody. So yeah, I think I can sympathize with Kasparov being shocked.

I feel like the absolute genius of these ai is taken for granted and not fully understood. The reason some games may look conventionally "boring", which is a complaint I have commonly heard, is that they are so stupidly good now that the ideas you see were founded 55 moves in advance. It's an awe inspiring thing, really! Please cover more, thank you!

I actually thought of that reverse-calculation idea on my own when I was a kid playing against my grandpa. I figured out the kinds of moves my grandpa liked and thought have him an advantage and then used those ideas to force him into losing positions. I spent a few weeks figuring out a whole system for calculating it. If I had any computer science skills I probably would have been able to turn it into a program that would be a very primitive chess dataset.
@Magnulus76
@Magnulus76 11 месяцев назад
Yes, that's a normal way to solve a strategic game like chess, to play against the opponents best moves. Monte Carlo random tries work better in simpler games, not in Chess. Even Chess engines that use Monte Carlo playouts modify it heavily to use evaluation functions (typically neural nets) to select which playouts to pursue.
