What he actually calls the "American" pronunciation is the correct one(Japanese). What he ended up calling him is the American pronunciation before they knew the correct one. Just like Ryu Hayabusa.

The Correct Japanese pronunciation is "Ri Yu", in English terms it would sound like Ree Yuuu.

@@tkmwong020480 Negative, its just U In Japanese we don't really have a R sound some might even go as far as make it sound as an L, most just negate it I've known a few Ryu's in my time we called "YU" with a heavy Y sound on it at most In English RYU is correct any way you say it as it depends on accent and the language the speaker is coming from. I THINK it was SUPER SF2 that finally got this sound correct when it said in game the fighter's names and it simply just said "YUUUU" which is correct Fact check me on that if any one wants, I really do think it was Super SF2 though that used the correct sounds first

@@EndlessTravels You are Wrong. In Japanese there are R sounds. Ra Ri Ru Re Ro based on the Hiragana Characters ら(Ra)り(Ri)る(Ru)れ(Re)ろ(Ro). I've learnt Japanese for 3 Years and these Letters don't sound like an L sound like You said. Then there is also the Y sounds Letters や(ya) ゆ(Yu) よ(Yo). So What You said was only Half Right.

Kage is pronounced "KA-geh" It literally means "shadow" in Japanese. It is Ryu's shadow of death

I honestly didn't know anyone pronounced it Rai-you anymore, especially after the proliferation of Japanese culture in mainstream and actual voicing of the character names in the games. Going to assume it's a troll because Ree-you isn't American. It's the closest thing most people can get to the proper pronunciation. People in the US said Rai-you just the same in the early 90s.

According to the Japanese, Ryu's name is pronounced "Ree-Yoo", not "Rye-Yoo". Gouken's name is pronounced "Go-Ken" and Akuma's Japanese name, Gouki, is pronounced "Go-Kee".

The permeance of Evil Ryu is also one of those moments that was a pivotal character arc for Sagat, who despite being one of the 4 Kings, was still an honorable warrior who sensed his tainted fighting spirit. As always, great show, my guy

Kage is pronounced "kaggay" which means shadow in Japanese and references his being a shadow of Ryu

Everybody in that first generation pronounced it Rye-U. Outside of special moves, and some intros, we didn’t have any audio files of them talking, let alone saying each other’s names. Now they have entire cutscenes where they say each other’s names all the time and Ree-U is the closest thing the English voice actors could get to Ryu proper. Point being, it’s not a British pronunciation.

As others have pointed out, you also mispronounce Kage. It's exactly the same as the last two syllables of the Arashikage clan of ninjas from G.I. Joe, and literally means "shadow".

@@killbotjames22 Oni was a beast in Street Fighter 4. He doesn't come in Street Fighter 5 whereas Evil Ryu did in the form of Kage. Maybe Oni will come to Street Fighter 6 along with Ryu mastering both The Satsui No Hado & The Power of Nothingness. More importantly.... Street Fighter 6 could have G as the ultimate boss

@@joshualowe959 Yea I jus feel that the way capcom built Kage’s move set, wasn’t a worthy enough. He feels handicapped & even tho I feel that way I’d still use him when I played SFV cuz I genuinely like the character. I can’t think of the game but hopefully they’ll make ryu like they did before, again. Where he could switch between the two fighting styles since he has no end point. The Last thing for ryu t to do is master both.

Evil Ryu is the best "what if" version of Ryu there is, Evil is stronger, has some of Akuma's moves, also gains the Shun Goku Satsu / Raging Demon, it's just fun to play as Evil Ryu and I enjoy him a lot, Thank you Top Hat Gaming Man for a great video ✌️

Evil Ryu is a fascinating, dark energy based character. Always wondered which version of Ryu we have been playing all along. Especially during SF3, where the taunt actually displays his chi energy, and eyes flare. But his journey, hmm.. far more powerful than Bison. Akuma. Plus Gill, and Urien. By SF3 able to channel, and sustain his abilities. If Kage is separate.. huh.. Even Sagat now channels that dark energy too. Excellent coverage sir, as always Hm I would love to see Remy covered in a video. Who do you think he is related to?

@@Motouyuu The reason is that nobody likes a pedantic know-it-all who feels entitled to run around "correcting" everyone else on the internet and showing off your knowledge of Japanese pronunciation or whatever. The reality is that in the Western world, for YEARS everybody said "Rye-you" therefore, IN ENGLISH, that pronunciation was not only correct, but standard. It's not "wrong" because when speaking English, we're not, as it happens, speaking Japanese.

I feel like there's an inevitability with Ryu that he will not deny the dark hadou but will embrace it. However, he won't let it control him, he will instead find a way to control it, finding balance within himself. He will then become far more powerful than any form of Akuma.

@@Erokingu That wasn't the case though. He only purified it and turned it into the "Power of Nothingness" instead of actually trying to control it. That's why we got Kage as a dlc character, sure you could say he's just another 'what if' but Ryu definitely didn't control the Satsui no Hado.

Bro the Assasins Fist clips though, if you got a place I can find the series I would LOVE to get my hands on them, saw them when the first came out and NEVER had a chance to show anyone else but I told them about how good it is. Street Fighter Passion at its finest. Also the Kage scenario is more akin to Shadow Rejection from Persona if anything. Kage is not pronounced as Cage. Correct pronunciation in Japanese is "Ka-Geh" which means shadow demon in Japanese folklore. That's why You see him with Fangs and Spikey tooth like a Japanese demon similar to the Oni.

The first time Evil Ryu appears was in the panasonic neo geo version of street fighter that features Akuma. If Ryu defeated Akuma with 2 consistent wins with no blocking and only kicks. After akuma falls his prayer beads break and a prayer bead rolls at Ryu's feet. The beads image fills the screen with the heaven kanji and changes Ryu into Evil Ryu. Gamepro magazine showed images of it occurring to confirm it existed. I do not know what versions this is available on but it is the 2d versions.

That, and the emergence of his literal inner demon. Ryu, to me, is still an interesting character. Sometimes...

@@luismaldonado5519 In Super Street Fight 2 (SSF2) the game announcer calls him "Ree-yoo" at the character select screen. At least that's how it was in the home console versions of the game. But by the time this version of the game came out, the "Rye-yoo" pronunciation was already so widespread that most of us ignored it.

As an American who actually lived in Japan around the time that SFII was released, I've always pronounced it more like "Ree-you", but as a single syllable since that's how I heard it when I lived there (and played the game in the original Japanese version BEFORE all of the idiotic name swaps).

Okay so I looked it up and the best way to describe how to say Ryu's name the "correct" way (the original Japanese way) is like saying redo but very quickly. Now like Row, or Reeeyooouuu or Raiiiyuuuuu. Always wondered and now I know. Matter of fact they say it the Japanese way in MVC origins.

I'm sure someone else will point it out but "Kage" is pronounced as two syllables. "Ka. Gay." Kage means Shadow in Japanese and is a reference to this being a shadow of Ryu.

Oddly enough, the mispronunciation "Rah yuu" is the one that originated in America. The pronunciation "Ree yuu" is the Japanese pronunciation attempted with American phonetics. The original pronunciation was almost like your first try, but the "u" sounds closer to something like a "ü", not an "o".

I’m American and since the game dropped in 92 most of us has always called him Ryu (Ry-U) never Ryu (Re-U)

It's pronounced "Re-U". Every official Japanese and English announcer and commentator calls him Re-U, except for some British ones.

@@Eggroll3s That is absolutely not true, and Troy Mayo's post absolutely is. It was pronounced RYE-YOU for years before anyone in English said "Re-U." Even in the movie it was pronounced that way. I know he doesn't need me running around running interference, but I'm totally with Top Hat Gaming Man on this one, and I think that the pedantic, nitpicky busybodies who run around "correcting" people on the internet are some of the worst people in the world. You do that, and then you wonder why normal people don't like you and attractive girls recoil from your presence? Well, wonder no longer.
