I have several hagstones. I live in Oregon, USA, and find them frequently along our coast. One headstone even found its way to me from the UK! My altar was desecrated by a horrible roommate and my hagstones cracked in half-she was fired from her job the next day and moved out within the week! I posted about the situation in an online group and was sent a double hagstone from the UK that has a unique shape and fits PERFECTLY in my casting hand when my index finger is extended!
Oregon resident here as well, with the same experience of finding multiple hagstones along our beautiful coastline! I have my own personal collection now, as well as giving some as gifts to my friends :)

My daughter and I were walking on the lakeshore at sunset one day, we were treasure hunting for sea glass. I have always wanted to find a Hagstone. We were walking and I was looking down and there they were! Two perfect hagstones, they were literally touching each other. One was bigger and one a little smaller, perfect for me and my daughter! They were gifts, meant for us. I made a necklace for them, one for me and one for my daughter, we never take them off and never will. Their power is strong.
moving through a hole in a stone is a "inspired","gnosis", "liminal" experience found through trance, the animal you turn into while moving through the hole in the stone is supposed to help you discover everything from your animal spirit to what gods/goddesses favor you and what shapes you can take in the underworld as well as being portals. this method is commonly known within fairy folklore but it's common in other traditions as well.
A month ago I was cleaning out the front rock-flower beds and found a hagstone! Right in front of our porch, where the roof runoff is, we have a bed of just rocks (I do sometimes put potted plants there). I guess since we've lived here the rain has been hitting this little rock just right. I didn't even realize until today that I had a hagstone in my room for years. I found a rock with a large hole just off-center at the seaside many years ago and found it cool so I brought it home and had it sat in a little origami bowl in my room since, I had almost completely forgotten about it until I saw your video today. Heck! I had no idea what they were even called before today.
Same here. Found it on the beach when i was little, probably 35 years ago. Put it in an aquarium and have been out in the yard, back in to another aquarium etc. Then a hag stone video popped up here on yt. And i remembered this stone. Just pulled it out of my fishtank again. And now i see the stone in a whole other light. Def going to try it out. It's so beautiful and nostalgic.
I have a specific small hagstone hung on red ribbon that I wear for protection when I leave my home. Knot magic is also incorporated into this item. I have strands of hagstones hung by my home entrances again for protection & incorporating knot magic sort of like witches ladders. I place hagstones on each windowsill too. I also have one in my mother jar of protection oil. I have always found my own, sometimes on paths in ancient woodlands nowhere near water. I have found them to be very powerful for protection work
The belief that seerstones can help you see truth or see more clearly actually might have been inspired by the real-life phenomenon. I, as a very near-sighted person, have noticed since I was a child that when I look through a small hole, my vision becomes better - not perfect, but just a bit crisper. It has something to do with the way light refracts when passing through a small hole, maybe similar to how primitive cameras work. I can imagine an ancient nearsighted person, who had no idea of glasses or somesuch, looking through a seerstone and being amazed at the way their vision magically improved.
If you do a search for "finger to see better" (I know, I know, it sounds weird), the link to the online newspaper the Independent uk (the first site I found when doing the search) explains this phenomena extremely well. If you can make a hole small enough, as explained on that site, text actually comes into sharp relief. As a nearsighted person with worsening astigmatism I was shocked at how clear my vision was using that technique. I'd never thought about hagstones in the way you describe, but it's very possible that you are spot on!
This is called a pinhole. It helps center the light on your eye. This is basically the roughest pair of glasses. When you go to an eye exam and you see less than 20/40, you are given a paddle with little holes to look through. That’s a pinhole. We’ve been doing it forever

I found a hagstone in a stream in New Jersey, USA, football shaped about two inches long. I wear it around my neck every day, too much history behind these stones to ignore it. Thanks for the information, I feel really lucky to find one. I heard that you don't find a Hagstone, a Hagstone finds you.

Thank you. I have found a ‘hag stone’. I have found about 2 or 3 actually. I never knew what I could use them for. I have the one I really like on my desk with other crystals. The others are somewhere in my other spot with more crystals. I live off the coast of California, USA about 4 hours away from LA.
This video was enlightening. I don't personally have one but I have found a few. I have, in the past, used them though they always left on their own(I lost them over time). I was unfamiliar with their nautical uses. Thanks for that information. I also never distinguished between how they where made, just if it was machine or nature.

This is great, my mum used to take us hunting for hag stones when we were children. We just called them "stones with holes in" and we were told that they would bring us good luck. It fascinates me that all this folklore is so pervasive in certain societies still.
I had collected several hagstones very similar to the one pictured here just because I thought they looked interesting. Then a dear friend gave me one she'd found in Wiltshire (Stonehenge county) where she grew up (I'm in the US). The stone is small, round and smooth, and black, totally different from the ones I had found here. She said they're common in Wiltshire. I didn't know for years what they were. Now I wear it on a red ribbon around my neck for protection. It's one of my most precious possessions.
On the east coast we call them "lucky stones," and people hang them on strings outside their coastal homes for luck. This was so interesting! I give them as gifts.

I have just written a Hag stone note in my book of shadows, which I will be adding a bit to in a bit. I found my stone as a child on Holy Island Lindisfarne, its a section of fossil sponge, a two inch tube made out of flint. Its right in front of me now, it holds the pencil I use to write my book of shadows. Funny what good timing your video is as I was wondering it I'd finished that entry or if I was ready to start a new page.

A beautiful hag stone found me today. It is donut shaped and the hole is worn from both sides, which has me scratching my head. It is the most beautiful example I've seen. I was walking with a feeling of gratitude for the beauty of the Park I was in and thinking about the Elemental energy present at this amazing place and it found me. Hi, very interesting tales about hagstones. I have always been fascinated by them and have been collecting them for years. I have found most of mine on the south coast of England. I tend to use them for protection. I have one under my bed to prevent nightmares and it is doing a great job. I also have one attached to my key bunch. I also have one above my front and rear doors to my house. Not forgetting about the few long strings of them dotted about my garden, so all in all I probably possess about 150 of them but tend to attach them to strings and give them away to people who enquire about them. They fascinate me and when I am on the beach they tend to jump out at me and I can't resist picking them up to join the family.

I first heard of these stones from Coraline. I’ve been searching for some time to find one. They are, unfortunately, uncommon around here. I intend to gift it to my nephew and now my niece too as my nephew loves the film and has always believed I had magic since young. Actually even my siblings assumed I was already knowingly practicing witchcraft but I didn’t realize it until my nephew who asked me about it BECAUSE of his love of the Coraline movie. Oh but I promise not once did he think of me as evil like the “Other Mother” in that movie. He just seemed to like the idea that if I sewed button eyes on his toys that he could use them as a walkie talkie and tell me about things through them. He thought it was neat apparently. No I can’t do that but I wasn’t about to ruin a comfort for my nephew and not let him be vulnerable. He has enough troubles from school children bullying him. Anyway, so yeah, hagstones, did not know about them until that movie and looked them up to learn more. Like I said, intend to gift them to my niece and nephew now, but especially my nephew since I figure it would be sentimental to him.

Thought I had lost it, but luckily it was on the back of a self behind my fall alter things. Also something you said made me wonder: an other yt witch called mintfaery has a story telling video about waking up as a child and seeing an evil spirit (I guess they're called blood cap) sitting on the chest of her brother who was sleeping next to her. This makes me wonder if there was more to it than people "believing they were attacked by some kind of evil spirit while experiencing a nightmare"
i loved this very in-depth. i do have hag stones used for protection and those with large holes viewing . i do not use red thread for those i wear but leather strip like a shoe string .plain will have knots .more involved will have an odd number of beads knotted on . beads are either wood or stone . thank you for doing this its nice to get a short but well done lecture on the craft . i always save these . to review later thank you

I see them for sale online but I've heard Hagstones have to be found or given as a gift in order to use their magickal properties. What is your opinion on finding one's own hagstone over buying one?
Here in the Ozark mountains (a small mountain range in the middle of the US for the non American folks) you can find hag stones. Actually didn’t know what they were called till I stubbed on this video. I’ve got a really large collection of them in my house because as a child I found them interesting. I wonder if the ones here are supposed to have the same properties as the ones back in Europe. I’m going to have to do some research
Thanks for the episode Hearth! I've been excited for this one for a while. I went scavenger hunting for a hagstone two years back and came back with a big chonker. Hoping to find some littler ones for charms in my area. Also if you lose your lists, like I do, then put them on your phone notes and date them.
So here's my question, then. Occult shops sell hag stones and things of that nature, do you recommend finding your own? Or would picking one up from a shop be okay as well? Yesterday I went in the creek in my backyard looking for one. I ended up giving up, and today I went back upstream, and I went just a little bit further than last time and I found one. And the thing I find interesting is that hagstones are something that have no magical property of sold. To find a hagstone is a gift from the gods or spirits, so if you buy one, it does not have the same affect

Hi yes I've had 1 hag stone my son found on the beach years ago when he was only little. I treasure it not only for being a hag stone but how he gave me it at age 4 " look mummy a magic stone for you " ( I'd never told him what hag stones are). Just a few days ago we returned to our beach and on the way told my son who is now nearly 13 " I hope we find more hag stones like you found when you where little" after a storm lots of sand had been washed away and we found about 6 hag stones ( not as polished as the first one but hag stones none the less) we also found lots of bones I've looked into and ironicly they are cattle bones by the looks. I think cows must wash down to the ocean from rivers or something. So far I've only kept my first hag stone on my alter as a special stone from my little boy. The hag stones I've found recently I've tied in a group and hug them on the side of my alter. I look forward to the day I'm drawn to do something with them.

The info on the nightmare is interesting. Mainly because I have had a repetitive nightmare before, the same one once or twice a year. I don't know anyone that hates me AND knows how to cause something like that. Some "thing" was causing them. I finally defeated it in my dream state. Had to get beyond pi$$ed in that dream to do it, but so far it's never come back.
