The History of Honda’s ATC 250R From 1981-1986

This is my look back at the history of Honda's iconic ATC250R performance three-wheelers. As the inventor of the ATC category Honda had a huge start on the competition in the three-wheeled arena. After introducing the world to the first high-performance three-wheeler in 1981, Honda dominated the high-performance category until the model's eventual retirement in 1986.

Awesome vid bro...my first ATC was an 82 110, then an 83 185, bumped up to an 84 200x, then on to my 84 250R, which I've still got, it's ported, polished, jetted, has a cobra kit exhaust, and 2" spacers on the axle....I run old school paddle tires at Pismo Beach, and have Buckshot mudders for every other type of terrain...I grew up on 3wheelers, can't see myself ever not owning at least one....✌🏻

👍My first ATC was a 200M back in 83. I've been looking to find a 350x and 250r recently. There's no other experience like riding 3 wheelers, especially the high performance models. I still ride and have quads and dirt bikes, but nothing can replace the fun I had on 3 wheelers back in the 80s!

FYI the tire brand is pronounces "oats." I debated between the 250R and 350X, ultimately chose the 350X. Bought it new in '85. My friend thought he would one-up me and got the 250R. He could easily pull away from me in the open, but in our normal riding areas in the woods he couldn't keep up. He also constantly fouled plugs. Both were excellent machines and a blast to ride.

I started out with a Honda 90cc, then 110, then 250R. Raced the 250R for 2 years and O' man that was work. Nothing more wild that that 250R. These 3 wheelers were safe as any motorcycle. Just rider lack of practice and understanding caused the rollovers. Thanks again for this video and remembering the yester years.

Love your vids. They sure help pass the workday! The 85/86, they still look so cool I remember all these models & who had what in my town. My one neighbor had a 250r & you'd hear him coming way before you saw the dust wake from our gravel road. We'd run out To watch the spectacle, a few times after a min or two came the sherrif. Not sure if he ever got caught. Happened on a race at waldoch sports & couldn't believe my eyes. Had to race after that & due to timing, did mx racing instead of atc's. Wish I had a bigger garage to fit all the old toys

I remember as a child one of my close friends had the Honda Odyssey 250R go-kart, it was crazy fast & fun. I remember his dad deciding to sell it for $100 back sometime around '99 because he was a legit smoothbrain who couldn't figure out how to change plugs, I was a kid but had about $200 saved so I begged my dad to let me buy it but he refused. Now anytime he brings up something he wished he'd bought back then because it's valuable now I remind him of that $100 Odyssey 250R, though he refuses to believe how high the demand is for those now.

We had a 200 in 82 on the farm, then my cousin got a 200x in 84, I begged my mom for a 200x so we went to the honda dealer, there were no 200x to be had,....but one traded in that very morning 84 250r. This machine was being traded because in one family two people had broken legs because of this machine. It had mangled plastic, bent handle bars, and a bent axle. Honda put the axle on a press so I could test ride it. The rest is history, I still have it, and ride it, and love it.

I got a Honda 110 3 wheeler at 12 years old, sold my coin collection, then moved on to the 250R at 15 and it was a monster...We were 80s kids, so we went out all day on trails, mud, hills, , wrecked, bled, lied to parents, cracked a beer and listened to ACDC on Summer nights. How much the world has changed, 3 or 4 of us would leave early in morning and get lost in the woods, make a fire, smash some hotdogs/marshmallows we packed and put in the lil carriage on back, and bounce out at sun up... What a time...

My brothers bought a new ATC 110 and brought it home leaving it in the bed of one truck wondering if our dad would say no to having one on our dairy farm. My dad was hesitant but slowly accepted it. My brother and I bought a 2nd ATC 110 that was slightly used. I destroyed 2nd gear in one of them when the throttle cable froze and I didn’t time turning it off between shifts. I flipped one going over a snow drift behind the barn and it landed on my left arm which was on frozen tractor tracks and broke both bones in half. The two ATC 110’s helped stress relieve my brothers and I in the last years up to our parents divorcing in 1981 and selling the farm. Having space and freedom to roam free all by yourself on a machine to get away from things is a good thing. I believe that Yamaha’s entry into 3 wheel ATV’s was a 125 which had the engine sitting farther rearward because of one of Honda’s patents. Then Kawasaki had a 200 with a differential rear axle which could be locked.

My friend had went out and bought the 1983 250r trike. I took it for a ride and said I had to have one. I purchased the 1986 250r. I have to say that the 86 eat the 83 with the 6 speed transmission and being liquid cooled. I owned this bike for about four years. Awesome trike, you got putt around on the trails when you wanted or you could drive the gutts out of it and it just kept on going. Finally sold it before I killed myself. Bad mistake would still like to own one. However getting too old for that crazy life. 57

A news executive son was out on one and I'm sure he wasn't shown by his dad how to ride it and the kid broke his arm. That is when all hell broke loose. All because an executive kid broke his arm.

The 85-86 ATC250R is my all time favorite off-road machine, I have owned many of them and loved every one. The greatest aspect, besides looking totally bitchin', was the engine, that machine is capable of putting along with my kids on their 90's as well as keeping up (kinda - a little scary, but worth the glory) with the modern four strokes out at the dunes. If Honda produced a modern version I'd buy one in a heart beat. Great video, Liked and Sub'd, keep up the good work.

86 limited edition 6-speed 250R with a 310 jug and hot rod crank ride a wheelie all six gears would be going so fast that when you wanted to slow down you'd hit the brake and let go of the throttle and you wouldn't hear anything for a few seconds until the tires hit the ground again extremely fast machine

Christer Stefansson Tiger made a very limited run of 500 ATCs but none of the Japanese actually produced one.
