Issey Miyake is one of the most influential fashion designers in recent memory. In this episode we discuss the insane story of how he survived the atomic bomb dropped on Japan, his journey to working with legends like Hubert de Givenchy, the creation of Pleats Please, his relationship with Steve Jobs, and so much more.

When I was a teen and first got into fashion around 81-82 (actually many caught the 80’s designer craze around this time, especially men’s wear fashion), there was a prestigious clothing store that featured Issey Miyake in their widow called Wilkes Bashford in SF. I think it was just one male mannequin with a collarless shirt with a side opening pocket that no one else had done before on a shirt and pants that had a long built in belt made out of the same material that was twisted around the waist 2x. It blew my mind bc it was so futuristic for that time. I ended up finding the same pants when Wilkes had a sale. I was still like 19 or 20 and on a student budget and couldn’t afford his clothes bc it was meant for the rich and famous. About a year later Macy’s started carrying his line and I wanted this pair that costed $175. and it was a pair of baggy khaki like pants but they were inside out. I eye them for about a month and finally decided to buy them and asked my friend that worked there if she could get them for me with her discount and she agreed. So I went there with a friend and told him to watch them while I get my friend that worked at Macy’s. When I came back, I found my friend walking around and not watching them (not sure if he hid them out of jealousy) and they were gone in about 15/20mins. Looking back, I should’ve asked the sales clerk if they had just sold them or if they had more bc they only displayed on me in each size. But I didn’t bc I didn’t want to put any attention on using my friends Macy’s discount. So I grabbed another pair I also liked that had this open pleat on the front leg. When you walked, the pant pleat opened up and closed. The only person I saw that had the inside out Issey pants was the same salesperson that was working that day I was trying to buy the pants at Macy’s. So not only was expensive to buy designer clothes back then, but also hard to get them before they sold out in your size. Which also made it appealing to own. A few year later. I found a pair of Issey pants at a goodwill store for like $10. It had a small tear where the drawstring hole on the waist and I got it fixed. Either they were donated by one of the 2 stores that carried his line in SF or donated by someone who bought them and didn’t want to fix. But they were in good condition and looked almost new or worn only a few times. I think no one knew who Issey was and why they probably didn’t sell quickly. I just wanted to say that back then when you owned designer clothes, bc it was kind of new for men to dress more edgy, when you wore these pieces, you got noticed and had something no one else owned or only a few. And compared to the clothes most men bought from Sears and Mervin’s, you really stood out. Many of us being in our early 20’s would wear them out in the clubs where most gathered on the weekend where the clothes were showcased in major cities in the US. You felt special wearing these clothes especially at a young age in the 80’s and felt you were wearing the same clothes that the stars like Michael Jackson and other big music artists were wearing.

Great story! YES.... your "friend" sabotaged you! He probably didn't understand your gift (a good eye) and was jealous/envious. But all things work together for good and that shows in the rest of your story! Cheers! 🕊🕊🕊

Thank you for sharing this, really insightful, makes me think if people didn’t care back then why do I care so much now about how i’ll be seen in clothes I enjoy? Maybe one day I’ll own some issey miyake.

I studied fashion design / illustration as well as pattern making in 2 different schools in Tokyo in late 60s-early 70s. Just about the same time as Issey was learning his crafts. I'm few years younger than him but he'd been my icon for design not only for clothing but of new textiles and even some metallurgy field. He definitely is a gigantic figure in the world fashion industry for bringing in modernity and innovations. I didn't pursue fashion as I thought competitions are severe to make it in that field not to mention long time of working in like pit in the hole place with not much rewards. Issey was smart in that he chose to go to foreign environments to pursue his passion.

The brilliance of Issey Miyake's amazing pleated fabric is that ever since its development, that type of fabric is now SO ubiquitous, that it can still be easily found even today. I myself have worn myriad clothing articles with these similar pleats; they're very comfortable and forgiving. Always loved Miyake's clothes, with their gentle Asian influence and aesthetic.

Pleats Please is a masterful example of how a simple idea and technique can still be regarded as luxurious and high end. I love my PP pants, dressed up or dressed down. It’s expensive as hell but the value of not having to baby the garment and it’s versatility make it worth every penny.
