My parents used to drop me off at the arcade with $5. Seemed like I could play forever off that money. This game, Kung Fu Master, and Tron were among my favorites.

Mine would give me $5 mind you this was in the mid to late 80s and by then $5 was about 40min of play tops. That is until I got extremely good at a few pinball tables and could keep a few of them going for 30min on a a frw quarters. :)

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries That's like all of my memories. So many memories are tied to what game I was playing when something happened. Good and bad ones. Graduated high school - singstar with family. But Kirby, the most lovable little fluff is tied to my aunt dying when I was in 2nd grade.

The arcade version of Karate Champ takes me back. I can still remember kids crowding around it at the roller skating rink that used to be on West Kimberly Rd in Davenport. It was very popular, at least until they later got Double Dragon and then a couple of years later the 4 player TMNT arcade game! Good times!

I was going to post the same! I was in fourth grade at the time and the bigger kids told me you fight the judge at the end. I got as far as the third level after it flips around and just assumed the game goes on forever, as the double speed mode was insane and took about a half hour for me to get to. Only in the days of RU-vid did I find out there is an end. Boss fight would have been cool especially in those days.

I'm so glad you did a video on this game. This was my first fighting game I ever played too, and I loved it. Absolutely loved it. A year ago, my daughter had her 9th birthday party at a local arcade/pizza place - and they had a handful of modern games and a couple retro - and lo and behold - sitting dusty and ignored in the corner was my beloved Karate Champ! Unfortunately, having not played one in over thirty years, I apparently had forgotten all the moves and got my but kicked almost immediately - but I still loved it. It's one of the first Arcade Cabs I plan to build for my own Man Cave... Thanks again for a great video! Cheers

When I first played Karate Champ It was at my favorite pizzeria on 51 Colombia street in the lower east side of Manhattan NYC in 1984. That pizzeria would have 3-4 machines and would switch them every 6 months to a year. When Karate Champ showed up it was the showcase, tons of quarters would be up in reserve and my 8-year-old behind had to push my way to leave a quarter up from the steelworkers who would come for a lunchbreak, gang members, NYPD, Sanitation guys, and Punks, playing this was fun, the two joystick combo was awesome and I liked the way the moves were pulled off. My dad the following year got me in Goju Ryu Karate because of this game, the moves in the game were legit in terms of blocks and punches. The Bull part was inspired by a real bull killing by karate punch by the legendary Kyokushin Karate master Sensei Oyama in the 60s, which was portrayed by his student Sonny Chiba in Karate Bull Killer, or something like that. Call me a sadist but I actually liked the Nes version, I bought it for 19.99 at Crazy Eddies in 1987 on clearance and would play with my cousins when they visited. Great game with awesome memories, again always awesome videos PatmanQC!

Your videos give me nostalgia overload, Patman! I guess they would be called, "nostalgiasms!" 😁 Also, your positive attitude is infectious. I'm in such a good mood now, I wish I didn't need to long into work in ten minutes. If not, I would watch some more of your videos this morning, then bust out some of my retro games and actually enjoy my day!

To me, Karate Champ is in the top 3 arcade games of all time. Loved it to death back in the 80's. Great video! But there were less than 24 different moves (i.e. there are 3 combinations for low kick and 2 for back kick)

To quote Robin that time Batman took him to the taco stand in Vatican City: "HOLY GUACAMOLE!" I forgot this game existed, but watching the video I remember I used to love playing it at my local 7-11 all one summer long... loved the "complexity" of the moves you could do and the challenges.

This came must of really been fun in the 80's , ppl say Street fighter copied it but let's be real this is a realistic martial arts game Street fighter was fantasy martial arts and it was the first of it's kind that game like Fatal fury and Mortal kombat followed , at the time Street fighter 2 came out in 91 there was nothing like it but u got to respect the fun and the happy feeling this gave u in the 80's.I'm sure it inspired Karateka and Kung fu master etc.It still has a very simple but happy 80's feeling looking at it away from modern day life complications .

As a kid I thought the master was holding up a red or white pie in Karate Champ player vs player. Now I can see he is clearly holding up a fan.

I threw a few coins in this game growing up. It was kinda hard as a kid because of that animation holding requirement. A legendary game no doubt.

Would you sometime do a documentary on the history of Urban Champion?

Wouldn't it be neat if there was an adaptation of Karate Champ, keeping the moves and twin-sticks, but as a side-scolling beatem up with bosses? Maybe someday my dream will come true, or I can get an AI to do it.

Karate Champ was the first game I ever got for the NES when I was 6 years old. I looked through the very thin instruction manual numerous times trying to figure out what I was doing wrong and where the hell that bull was I saw on the back of the box.

I remember I was playing at a neighbor's house when my brother walked by saying that a local pizza place got a new karate game (Karate Champ, of course). I joined him and walked the quarter mile to the pizza place, not realizing 'til we got there that I was barefoot. I also had no money on me. But I went in anyhow; the place was packed, and there was a good wait for a turn to play, but I thoroughly enjoyed just watching the game. My brother gave me a quarter to play against him, and I lost almost immediately. But a great time nonetheless!

I got the NES game for Christmas, and played the heck out of it with my older brother. The winner was always random, because neither of us knew how to control the characters! It isn’t a good game, but as a kid, you had to play what you got!

Can you do a video on the history of galaga, all the ports and tips/tricks? It's my favorite game and I'm surprised you only did a short video of the atari version.

I really loved this game on arcade but sadly i never owned the c64 version, I wasn't aware of its existence at the time, good old times when your only source of informations about games were your friends (we hadn't a vg magazine till 1987)

I think I still remember how to do some moves. I have to double check to make sure I have my latest phone number right on a form but I think I can still pull off a front flip followed with a back kick combo lol.

I legit loved the NES version as a kid. Yeah looking back it was mega janky but it was satisfying when you would actually do what you intended.
