By the middle of the Great Depression, the Knott family had been on their land for a decade and a half. They'd built a successful berry business and chicken dinner restaurant. Over the next five years, the restaurant continued to grow, but the berry farming was slowly replaced with diversions to entertain the guests waiting in line for dinner. These were the first attractions of the emerging Knott's Berry Farm theme park.
We owe an enormous thanks to the Orange County Archives, holders of the Knott's Berry Farm historical collection. Without their generosity and friendly assistance, we would not have access to many of the incredible historic images and videos in this series. In particular, Chris Jepsen was of vital importance. He selected many of the images in this series based on our storytelling needs, and his keen eye for quality, yet-to-be-published images made this series infinitely better. All the images he selected - more than we could fit in these episodes - are freely available to the public on the OCA Flickr account. He also runs a delightful and insightful local history blog, which we highly recommend. You can find it here: ochistorical.blogspot.com/

Hey, friends! We now have the option for channel memberships! This recurring support is similar to our offerings on Patreon, now with the convenience of not having to leave the RU-vid platform. Patreon is still the better choice - the support levels are more affordable, they get a few extra perks, and more of your support comes directly to the channel. But here on RU-vid, channel members get these cool new emojis I stayed up an entire night making: adventurepikachucolonelisland They also get a cool little symbol beside their username when they comment. This upgrades over time to show how long members have been supporting us, and each version is based on a design similar to that first emoji. And for those of you that want to help the channel, but don't want to commit to a monthly membership, you can hit the "Thanks!" button and support us with a one time gift. Don't worry - nothing is going away from the channel with these changes. The regular Archives and Sightlines videos will still be available for everyone. Members will just be getting some added benefits (most of which were already available to the Patreon crew). Thanks for watching, Dave

I can’t imagine how scary the world around them might have seemed with these huge events like world wars and the depression but carrying on regardless. The theme park is such an awesome monument to resilience and endurance.

I think WWI must’ve been quite scary, given that they were living out in the Mojave, failing to grow anything in the desert, barely scraping by financially, AND the world seemed to be falling apart around them. When Walter Knott later said that those years in the desert were the hardest of their lives, and that nothing after that could bother them, I believe it.

Those guys were so far ahead of their time. Just like Walt Disney was. It’s amazing what hard work and a dream can create. Thanks for the interesting story. Lots of good information. Keep up the great work!!

That was very informative, but it also makes the ghosts of ghost town seem a little more alive

Question 🙋‍♀️, Ghost Town opened in 1940 right?
@ThemeParchive
@ThemeParchive Год назад
Correct. The first facades went up on Main Street in 1940, and guests could roam around the area. But there wasn't much to see. The first attractions opened in late 1941 and early 1942, and the "peek-in" attractions came after those.
