@Edwin Requena what if you lose your hard drive, what if your heart becomes corrupted or damaged? I guess the same could be said for the disks, but just having the disc and also digital copies is beneficial.
@Turd Ferguson what's real sneaky is when they sell you a physical copy, and inside is basically a blank disc and you still have to enter a code to download the game online...
I worked at Marvel Games when home release came out. There was a point when we were asked if we wanted to "correct" the voices since that needed to be re-recorded. For a brief moment, we considered it, but ultimately we felt it just wouldn't be the original game without "welcome to die" and other badly translated lines. (This was largely my personal decision since I was the biggest fan of the game on staff. What I REALLY wanted was both -- but that just wasn't possible due to Konami's resources for the game.) Also worth noting: The re-recordings were not so much "licensing reasons" as they were to protection against being sued -- no one knew who recorded them originally! The records simply did not exist.
X-Men arcade is definitely one of my all time favorite games. I spent most of my 12th birthday party trying to beat it. Great video Pat thanks for the memories.
They're ok, I like After Burner, Altered Beast, and Ninja Kun. I remember being in 1st grade in 1988 going to to the Arcade at the Paddle Wheel in Las Vegas. It was the original Casino before it turned into some Debbie Reynolds thing. But I remember hearing that "Rise from your grave" and those dudes punching rotten skeletons and I was transfixed and was telling all my friends about it at school the next day.
I remember playing this at Wildwood in the summer on vacation as a kid. When you had 6 players playing at the same time it was a breeze. Nothing could stand in your way. Bosses were such a joke as everyone would just use their mutant powers on them. Kids today just won't understand how fun it was to play an arcade game with total strangers!
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries , um, the new TMNT game also allows up to six players to play it, AND in same system, shared systems/televisions, LAN, online, and possible cross-platform ways, too, just saying.
I've spent so much money playing X-Men. This arcade still remains one of my favorites from Konami which they were on fire in the video game industry during that time period.
Thanks for posting this! Konami's X-Men arcade game is one of my all-time favorites! I was in college in 1992 and I would play this all the time with friends.
This game was pure chaos with it's six player action. It's crazy having the full team which the game has more special effects and explosions than a Michael Bay movie as players fire off their mutant powers. While I think the other konami fighters had deeper move sets than Xmen, it still a very fun fast paced game. I wish they kept the power ups and health system from the Japanese version. It was lame you lost health even if you had a blue orb in the US version. Between that and the machines difficulty being cranked up this game was a real quarter muncher as was very hard not to die since bosses really took a beating and was no way to heal yourself.(Despite that being Wolverine's main super power.) Having played this on my PS3 it's much much easier to go thru the Japanese version on the normal setting. I have seen 3 different versions of this cabinet in the wild. The huge six player version, a 4 player version, and a 2 player one I saw once at a hotdog place near my house. The Ps3 version let's you switch between the 4 and 6 player modes while playing the game. If you're speed running the game (to get the trophy for beating it under 20 minutes or so.) you want to pick the four player version. You can just blast thru the game as Colossus since the game has a closer perpective than the 6 player screen, your mutant power will cover the entire battlefield when you unleash it. On side note speaking of Colossus, this game influence the comics. Prior to the game Colossus when gradually change forms when he shifted between his super mode and human form in the comics. After this game the comics made it so Colossus would flash when draw like the Xmen arcade game, and his powers became more energy based. While he never unleash an energy burst like the game, this caused comic writers to reimagine how his powers worked. It's one of those instances where something that started outside of comics migrated back.
I was 19 or so when this came out and a huge X-Men collector. Flipped out at how great it was back then! Colosus was my favorite and I loved playing as him. You could hear his, "Yaaaargh!!" all across the arcade. Lol Thanks for this review.
If the Arcade game was based on the 1992 Animated Series: Cyclops, Storm and Wolverine would wear their costumes from the show. Colossus, Nightcrawler and Dazzler would be replaced by Beast, Gambit and Rogue. Kitty Pryde would be replaced by Jubilee. Omega Red and Sabertooth would be among the bosses.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Possibly. It's just weird how that worked out. Konami made a 6-player game out of what turned out to be just a 22-minute animated pilot. Making a game out of a series with only thirteen episodes I can see, especially since they did that with the Bucky O'Hare series from 91', but banking their huge cabinet on a pilot episode... now that was a gamble. Fortunately the game was good and that huge cabinet was eye-catching. The game stood on its own despite a reboot of the show. That's an accomplishment for the history books.
@@blazerocker1734 While the game might of have been based off the short-lived show, Bucky O'hare started out as a comic which was pretty popular. So Konami was exactly gambling on a unknown or new series, when making those games. It already was a some-what well-known series with a decent fanbase. Probably, the same reasoning behind the X-men series as well, they decided to get in on the success of the comics and license it before they show started and got popular, which would've raised the price significantly. While I admit I personally never fully watched that original series that the arcade game was based on, I actually think it's cool that it's based of it because of how it more accurately portrays the style/look, storyline and characters (and their costumes!) of the comics at the time, than the 92 animated series since there eventually was a ton of games and content that used the style and story-lines from that series. (Although, I do think that sequel to this based off the '92 series would've been simply amazing!!)
I remember if you played as Nightcrawler, on certain boss levels if you position the character next to the boss and "saved up" your specials, you can hit the boss twice with that special. (specifically Juggernaut and Nimrod) One great part of the game was when Magneto is defeated and the game "ends" it simply repeats the gameplay from the beginning,
The time is 6:28 which is 2 times the number of pi, and which is the circumference of a circle with the radio of 1, just like how blob is a big fat circle Coincidence?
1:48 The picture of the X-Men arcade cabinet you use isn't the actual arcade cabinet. It's a miniature replica somebody made and sells. I know because I thought about buying one. Plus the joysticks look like pool noodles...
Storm in this game is literally the best and most balanced character in the game because of her scepter/wand gave her the best reach, she's pretty quick to maneuver around, her mutant power with the tornado cleared out the most enemies in one shot, her combos seem to be the best and Storm's normal strength wasn't too bad. I remember playing this on an actual arcade machine years ago and wanting to play as Storm for some reason. I'm glad I did, because she was the best in the game, and I don't think many people realize how good she really was. I seen people just picking Wolverine because well he's Wolverine, and Colossus because of his strength and "the yelling". I wonder why Konami never imported this to the home consoles at the time. Probably thought it was too hard or not good enough to have X-Men the arcade game on the Genesis, NES or the SNES at the time
This was the only game I wanted to play in the arcade at the movies. My nanna would sneak us into 2 or 3 movies and afterwards wait patiently as we ran out of coins quickly playing X-Men. Some of the best memories of my childhood, I miss you so much Nan
I remember this in the arcade. To hide the bezel, they put one monitor facing up with a mirror and the other facing forward to give the illusion that the screen was really wide.
You got me right in the feels with this video. X-men was the go to game for laying the smackdown on Magneto's forces. Oddly enough this game lasted way longer than the cartoon it was based on.
Another great video; love the delivery of the information! I'll never forget rolling up on an arcade with a five dollar bill (which was a ton of money for me back then and certainly my whole arcade budget for a day), and grinding through the entire game, start to finish, 25 cents at a time. Other players came and went, but when I finished it, I was so proud. There was one catch, however: I panicked and slipped up during the fight with Magneto, and after playing for nearly twenty rounds as Nightcrawler, I accidentally selected Dazzler and just happened to beat the game on that quarter. It felt a bit wrong that Nightcrawler didn't get to close it out after all that, but I was still tremendously pleased with my how five dollars was spent that day. Thanks for the reminder of some great times.
I remember playing the 6 player version at Putt-Putt Golf back in the day, when it was new. Just in the fact that it was so huge, blew me away. Later, when I worked at Chuck E Cheese, and we had the 4 player version. When my twins were about 5 or 6(11 now), I used to hook my laptop up to my 65", and let them play MAME multiplayer games(TMNT, SIMPSONS, ETC). X-Men sticks out, because my son kept quoting the line "YOU WILL DIE, X CHICKEN!!", because he thought it was so funny.
Nothing beat getting up early in the morning on Saturdays and watching cartoons till noon and then heading to the arcade for the rest of the day. Those were the best times at James Games in Upland, CA.
Hey! I just saw Paul Rudd on here! It's really cool to see commercials featuring well known actors before they became famous. Oh...on a side note, I absolutely LOVED the XMen arcade game when it first released. Fed the cabinet at my local arcade many, many quarters. The memories! 😊 Also, I love your videos! I am seriously addicted to them. Keep up the good work!
Hmm, Paul Rudd, in a commercial for this game, and yet, years later, he becomes a part of the official Marvel Cinematic Universe, namely, as Ant-Man, and also, by extension, so do the X-Men, so, foreshadowing much?
Loved X-Men arcade game when i played it young. I loved the original series and all that followed after. I always played as Wolverine or Cyclops and be cool to see it as next cabinet arcade for walmart.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries No problem. It's funny to see a pre "Friends" Paul Rudd looking so young. I wonder if Nintendo gave him a console and a few games for filming the commercial.
I played this in the arcade and was blown away by how big it was. That machine devoured my quarters and I have no problem saying it! I still have the one I downloaded on my ps3. Maybe this will be the next big thing from arcade one up in the next 2 years
I absolutely loved this game because I was a huge comic fan and have watched "Pryde of the X-men" many times. It's only 25mins long and definitely worth checking out on RU-vid.
Gotta say I really enjoy your vids, always takes me back on time. Just decided to subscribed and thanks a lot for sharing this awesome oldschool info. Can't beat a classic! 😎👍🏻
Cyclops all the time! This game is a party magnet in the arcades! Would have so much fun beating the snot out of bad guys; So much fun to play when you're not doing it solo.
I loved this game, they had it in the Student Center Arcade on campus when I was in college. Thank goodness for Ramen and bologna, or I would have starved. I spent all of my money on this game. haha One thing I could never understand...Why was Dazzler in the game? They could have picked Beast, or Gambit, or literally almost any other X-Man other than her. People used to get so upset when they got stuck with Dazzler. :)
The only thing I could think of was they wanted a another female X-Men in the game they were limited on choices. I think dazzler is the worst one on the roster so do a lot of other people :-)
Dazzler is in the game because it's based on the 1989 cartoon pilot "Pryde of the X-Men" and the team members are the ones from that cartoon (as are most of the enemies).
All these years and this is still a dope game. I remember , as a kid , I couldn't beat it and when I got a little older , I finally beat the game. I played this game at the arcade and downloaded this game on the PSN store. Classic dope game.
They used to have that arcade game back at an old Mall of mine in Pittsburg/Antioch, California called "County East Mall". The arcade place was called "pocket change" It was the six player dual-screen one.
Thankful Dazzler the legend was chosen to be in this video game... my youth. She's an underrated Marvel icon. Her powers are unstoppable and she's fun.
I used to play this fantastic game when it was still in arcades. I found, on my first attempt no less, that with Storm and proper spacing while attacking you could beat the game on a single quarter. Still, easily, one of my favorite arcade games.
Having played previous Konami beat-em-ups in the arcade like: TMNT and The Simpsons... when X-Men was released, I was all too happy to part with my pocketfuls of quarters to play this arcade classic with a bunch of my friends. Nothing was more satisfying than finally getting to the last stage and beating Magneto (the master of magnet) into submission. Looking forward to your next video and remember, "Nothing moves The Blob!" 😂
I never seen the 6 player wide screen version with a seamless stitching lol. The screens used to fold into each other causing a warp down the middle or screen burn in EVERY cabinet I played this on in the 90's lol.
In 1998 I was 7 and I remember going in the arcade with my brothers and see that game and always caught my attention because how big it was fun as hell too
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries To be honest, I barely even watched any past Play vids for more than a minute or so.. But the recent stuff with History you dig up along with the images and variety of info you give is incredible ! I'm sure your channel will start picking up Subs fairly quickly !!!
This game is my all-time favorite Marvel game and Beat 'em up. The game is timeless and still looks fantastic today. I probably used NightCrawler the most because Wolverine and Cyclops were always taken by other players.
Konami should've made another installment called X-Men: Brotherhood where the story is altered with the X-Men as bosses and the playable characters are : - Toad - Blob - Pyro - Juggernaut - White Queen - Magneto
I remember this game. Growing up going to the mall was the thing to do on a Friday night. I think I was one of the only girls that loved to go to the arcade, I put so much money into this machine. I did beat the game with several boys, great memories!!
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries as long as your doing the whole Take you back to the past thing, I do hope you'll do the Jurassic park arcade game since I have a theory that game was retailed exclusively at chuckie cheese franchises.
Disney is the problem. They're completely incompetent, especially when it comes to video games. MvC Infinite & Disney Infinity toy-line/games are strong proof. See also, the newer Star Wars Battlefront series from EA. If it is good, like MvC Infinite was, Disney sabotages it. All Disney/Marvel products are merely shilling for their woke movies. Sad.
Those cabinets were gorgeous. Unfortunately in Europe we didn't get them, most arcade games were placed in generic two player or four player cabinets and the owners just changed the games inside, there were exceptions like Sega and Namco's most advanced games.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries It was not so bad, it allowed the owners to change games more often, the real problem came with games that required more buttons than the cabin had, it was pretty common to see Street Fighter 2 cabinets with only three buttons, limiting the experience.
I've been going through your videos, and I'm not done yet so if you've already done it, I'll get there. I'd love to see a video on Black Tiger from the arcade, and especially be interested to hear why the NES version I ordered from a Sears catalog as a kid never came out. I'm now 40, and I'm still pretty upset about it :-) All I've ever found online is a single screenshot, and several forums where others have asked the same question. Anyway, Black Tiger was a fantastic arcade game and deserves much more love than it gets. thanks for the videos!
X-men 92' arcade is hands down my favorite arcade game of all time. Our local arcade had a 6 player cabinet and I was fortunate to have beat the game several times in games with all 6 players playing (I was always Wolverine!) I remember waiting/hoping for an X-men II arcade based on the 92' Fox animated series. That would have been amazing.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-DocumentariesDefinitely! I always tought Wolverine, Cyclops, Gambit, Rogue, Storm and Beast would be a pretty solid roster for the sequel.
PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries that would be you. i watched a video earlier today & the line i’m still laughing at is “my grandma could draw better sprites & she’s got the shakes”. this video made me laugh too. keep up the great work, i’m enjoying these trips down gaming lane
This game brings back some good memories for me from a time when I was struggling emotionally as a teen. It was a good escape from what was bothering me. I was really good at the game too. I could play over and over on one quarter without getting hit using Nightcrawler. The trick was herding the enemies up and down into a group and jumping through them diagonally so you clipped them all Only using the teleport power when i would miss a hit and was in danger to interrupt the enemies attacks. Some of the other characters you could do this trick but not as well. Depending on how quickly they moved and how they jumped across the screen.
I remembered I visited a bar in Columbus Ohio that has this game back in 2015. Way cooler to see in person. I do actually have this game & The Simpson’s still on my PS3 in the storage.
PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries thanks, I’m huge with preserving downloadable games when it came to the PS3/360 generation which is impossible to find now. I think the biggest one in my library is the Marvel vs Capcom: 2 & Origins. Both games just disappeared on the face of the earth after the licensing.
documdocumentaries same here.. the 80's where great to me growing up. Arcades where the best place to spend time just having fun and spending plenty of quarters. I loved the fact that I was able to witness the highlight of the arcade era into the console era. Good times.. still miss the arcades though.
This machine is an absolute must have for every collection, if you can fit it into your home that is lol. I couldn't so I had to settle for the 4 player cabinet.
