One thing you didn't mention about Golden Axe II on the Mega Drive is just how great the music is. It's truly epic and one of my favourite soundtracks for the system.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentariesyou failed real bad in this documentary here. Golden Axe 2 on genesis had one of the greatest soundtracks in sega history
I spent lots of quarters on this game (and midnight resistance). The dwarf was my guy. I ended up developing a method to get through the games with only one quarter.
@Nosaveddata you on about larry or this channel? - if larry....larry would know this! Trust me... ive followed the dude since mid 90s way before youtube and surprised we didn't cross paths on a few occasions in my life.
@Nosaveddata because he would know this. I guarantee it. See earlier comment. Been following him since mid 90s. Its common knowledge anyway to anyone that was a fan of such things back then. Hope this makes it clearer as to why i wrote what i wrote. Many thanks
This is your best video yet, Pat! GA was another 80s arcade obsession of mine that you can add to the others I've mentioned under your other videos. The Christmas morn that I got my copy of GA for the Genesis made for an awesome Christmas vacation. Another port worth mentioning is actually the Wii VC release of the arcade game. It's output is 240p so using component cables w/ a CRT TV makes for nice, natural scanlines and super crisp pixels. The only thing I'm missing is a cable to plug my X-Arcade stick into my Wii for the full arcade experience. ...more thoughts coming after these messages.
Thanks, I wasn't aware of the VC release so thanks for the info. Thanks for sharing your Christmas morning memory as well. I love hearing little stories like that. Cheers
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I still play it now and again on the Megadrive because I love the music. I have it on the Xbox but prefer playing it with the megadrive pad because modern D pads don't lend themselves well to the double tap for run in my experience. It just gets damn frustrating 😂
Thank you for making me feel 11 again. I spent the whole day at work watching your channel. I played all these games , knowing the history makes it much better. I raised my hand in victory for this channel. Thanks
I played the Genesis version growing up along with the sequel. Very fun games. The second arcade title is amazing and may be the best of its genre. Sega dropped the ball in not porting it to the Sega CD or Sega Saturn. Even what should have been the definitive home port of the original on the Sega CD was neutered without any visual enchantment and no 2P option. Such strange decision making.
When this arcade come up, i notice that the sounds samples was from first blood. Sense then i never hear about it, until now. Keep the good work man, your videos are cool.
This was a fun game to play and each character had a different style of wielding their weapon. If you had enough time in between fighting, you could see the special movements they would make with their weapons. The charging move was the best move against larger enemies.
I played this game so long ago at a pit stop while I was on a road trip with my grandparents I always tried to describe it to people and nobody ever heard of it they all said I was makin shit up so happy to see my memories haven’t betrayed me
Nah, actually, you are just dreaming this. It never happened. We are all just a manifestation of your sub conscious mind. As soon as you wake up. We will all disappear. You are making all of this up. In a sense
My grandfather had this in a bar he had back in the day, I spent a ton of time playing this game, and a lot of quarters that I made my grandpa give me back lol.
I really like your videos. I honestly never grew up in the arcade but I remember getting a Sega Genesis Model 1 at a garage sale with Golden Axe. And I played the heck out of it
You forgot to mention that a special attack (a spinning blade attack for the male and female, a rolling attack for the dwarf) can be initiated by pressing 2 buttons together. It does more damage than normal attack. Usually one would attack 2 times, bash 2 times, and then do a special attack to deal maximum damage.
me too. the 80's were great as a kid. riding your bmx bike all day with your buddies and all the water you needed was a draw off of a water hose... none of the bottled water lunacy.
...I worked at a 7-11 in Calgary in the early 90's...this was the only game in the store. Pretty sure most of my paycheck ended up in that machine! Not the best game maybe, but it had character :)
Another nice vid, dude!! I thought only the Genesis played host to a home port of the arcade game!! The first arcade game will always be my fav! Tyris Flare was always my favorite character!! :D
I played Golden Axe 1&2 on Sega Genesis. This is the time when you are sharing game with your friend and going to each other’s home to play. The multiplay is the most exciting one for me. And this is still how I distinguish Axe from Hatch.
Thats weird and fun that the characters escape from the arcade at the end. Speaking of characters escaping, that bald dancing drugged up guy looks like he escaped from the original Hills Have Eyes movie... And as always, keep knocking it out of the park Pat! Thanks man! 👍🤗👍
I loved both the first game and also GA:RODA~! My favourite character of them all was the centaur girl; when I saw her, I fell in love : ) Thank you so much for your fun and information - packed videos, I enjoy them all~!
Golden Axe was one of the titles that ignited my love for the Sega Genesis. I did not play Golden Axe arcade until many years later. My opinion, I thought Revenge Of Death Adder was one of the best arcade sequels ever made. BTW....i never knew about the Fist Blood Scream. I'll never be able to figure out how that went over my head. Lol
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Well at the very least , i'll say the content is memorable , considering one year after i watched it , i still couldn't get it out of my head Haha.
I remember first seeing the Master System version and was so blown away by the graphics, especially being on an 8-bit console. Of course as a kid we were easily impressed at anything new coming out at the time. It's still my preferred version of Golden Axe to this day though.
I loved this game in arcades as a kid. I had a Sega CD and at one point rented the Sega collection or whatever it was called that included Golden Axe and I loved this version. I also remember that the arcade I would go to, the title screen music was incredibly loud to the point where you could feel that it was playing this, or as I refer to it, just right. I was always amazed by the music in this game and the details like the fact that the stage is a turtle or an eagle mid flight.
Golden Axe was the first game I ever beat in the arcades. Used to play it all the time at the laundry mat while my mom did laundry back in the day. Always remembered that ending when the characters escape the game into the real world. Also as a huge Conan Barbarian film fan this was the perfect game for me, and Rastan.
Yes. They probably mistakenly thought "Battle Axe" and "Broad Axe" were synonymous in English for the type of axe the dwarf uses. However, broad axes look completely different and are only intended for cutting wood. Would have been an all-around bad title.
Julie Charlton , daughter, what are dem dar kanji? Broad Axe or ...Battle Axe? This guy is the Bob Ross of video game analysis, video compilation and editing artist wizard... Golden Axe is the game that you'd play no matter what. 4 player mode at the arcade was a seriously hilarious riot. One kid would have to leave and their player would be immobile and the other three players couldn't leave the area until either someone moved the abandoned player or they died a morbid death and then leave the area. This left you open to attacks on your own character so the rest of the party would defend your player if you were playing both.. I never saw the severed head version. That is intense. Watch this with friends and fam. He uses some old timey lingo ya just don't hear that often outside the barbershop. Farm OUT, MAN! Great game!
11:30 attack was assigned to the fire button, but a joystick port could address up to 3 buttons (the same as mouse buttons: left, right and middle). Amiga version uses 2 buttons. Owners of the Quickshot joysticks could switch into SEGA mode and use A-button as fire, B-button as jump and A+B buttons as a magic attack.
I remember being I think 12 and my friend and I went down to the 7-11 armed with an entire roll of quarters, and finally managed to beat the game. I remember seeing the end sequence and wondering why the game was called "Great Axe" during that final cinematic.
Oh that Spectrum port was something else. I remember as a kid my friend had a ZX Speccy and when he first showed me a game I thought the tv was broken 🤣 I was a Commodore kid all the way.
LOL, that's pretty funny. When I first started seeing spectrum games after being a Commodore owner all throughout my youth I didn't understand how people go play games with such horrendous colors.
lol. I still have that reaction in general. I'm technically a bit on the young side to have had 8 bit home computers, but I ended up with an 800XL around 1990 (two of them in fact - mostly due to the games. Ended up with about 400 tapes from what I remember) I saw my friend's Amiga and c64 every so often, but that's about it. Not until much later I saw any spectrum stuff... And it's really a WTF moment every time when you see it after the fact. XD That's in spite of the fact that I used that atari with a monochrome green monitor, because someone had convinced me in Europe they didn't work with televisions. I've since learnt that's completely incorrect and I could've hooked them up to the television that sat on the end of the same desk that I used my SNES with, but... Oh well. XD
As a Spectrum owner as a kid it’s great to see you cover all versions. I loved the Golden Axe arcade, it was one of my favourites and by the looks of this I’m bloody glad I’d moved onto the Amiga before it came out on hone computers because I’d have been so disappointed if I’d had to make do with the Specky version.
Growing up here in the states I never knew the spectrum existed until mid 90s. I really enjoyed the Amiga version of this game as well. It was really well done
PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries yeah the whole scene was different here in the UK (and I think Europe) third and fourth generations were dominated by the micro computers. Lucky thing too as most of us were way too poor for a NES/mega drive/ SNES. A lot of the games were terrible, but there were enough good ones to keep us going and I have fond memories of coding text adventures with my brother. Anyway, like I say the depth of your videos is much appreciated.
@@KennyTew2 Thank you very much. I have read that the 16 bit consoles were crazy expensive over in Europe. When I first started seeing the spectrum absolutely terrible but after further research there were quite a few good games on it
I had the Amiga version and then the MegaDrive one. They were both awesome. As a kid I didn't notice the issues you have metioned. I loved the second one as well. Ah the old days...luckily emulators exist thank god for Ebay as I have an original MegaDrive 1 sat in front of me also!!!
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Thanks again for this great Axe Battler/Golden Axe/Broad Axe Documentary, Patman. That opening level theme is one of the best music themes for one of the best brawler games of all time. Thanks!I was thrilled when I got this game for Genesis back then on its release in stores. I played it just last week and compared it to the arcade. Close port!
I remember this series fondly. I played the original in the arcade and on PC. I believe the PC version had an extra stage too. In the mid 90s I played the Revenge of Death Adder in my university's arcade. I wish I'd played it more and finished it, because it was the only time I ever saw it. Overall it was a great series. With indie games treading in beatemup territory, perhaps it is time for the series to be revived
Well the PC version was based on the Genesis version which had an extra level. It's been 15 years since the last game and with the retro resurgence hopefully they can do another 2D version
I love those arcade mini-documentaries. You could have made an honorable mention to alien storm as a spiritual successor. It was known back then as "golden axe with aliens"
Probably one of the best games ever on Amiga 500. Excelling on all areas basically: nice graphics, snappy gameplay and legendary music. The go-to game to play with a buddy, played soooo many times. Kicking those elves, throwing enemies off the cliff and the general outrageousness made it stand apart imo. Also it was fun to have a surprise duel with your co-player during the heat of battle or just deliver a friendly slash to the back at times :D Revenge of the Death Adder is like the pure perfection developed from the original, I wish there would be a decent modernization or a 2D sidescrolling sequel. It delivers a different experience compared to 3D stuff, I think. There are WOW and Diablos etc on 3D area.
Certain developers really tried their hardest to bring the arcade experience home. You can tell this was the case with golden axe. It was a fantastic conversion and some people say it's even better than the Genesis port. I wish the Amiga had three button support though.
I remember playing the DOS version in both EGA and VGA.. the more RAM I freed up, the more enemy diversity I Got. Along with some attacks, like hitting over the head, was only 'unlocked' when I had enough free ram to load up the sprite frames :)
I played the Amiga version of this a TON. It was the go-to two player game my brother and I would play to bash enemies together. Somehow we got into a little tradition and played this on Christmas several years in a row.
I use to love to play both the original, and the sequel. Wow, how many quarters my friends and I use to plunk down. Lost count. Nowadays, I still play it on my home arcade system. Still fun.
Like many games you cover, there was an arcade upstate, (My parents would go up for vacation with us int he summer) and a LOT of these games were here. Including this, Superman, TMNT, alterted beast, Operation Wolf, Pacman, Donkey Kong, etc.... Many memories. I was so happy when Mame came along to play these again. Minus the money thrown into the machine. haha
The mame emulator is fantastic not only for a lack of the coin slot but also just being able to try these games that we never could when you were younger
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Agreed. Some I didn't even know existed. Others, well I spent a ton of my parents money, but never beat before Mame. Golden axe, Altered beast, and TMNT were some I did get through. I know they have Barcades now. I do miss old arcades though. Double Dragon used to be at one I went to all the time in the front. Years after I grew up, I played that music for my father from Double dragon and he knew it was the Arcade. Good times
I have literally wondered my entire life where the scream samples used in Golden Axe came from, because they were so visceral and real sounding compared to contemporary games.
It does sound suspiciously like the wilhelm scream though. That's a scream from a common film sound library that everyone uses, so nobody really 'owns' it. - if that's really what it is then of course they got away with it, because sound libraries are legal to use for anyone that owns the library. (case in point, see how many games and movies you can find that have the Doom 'open door' effect in them - it's a LOT.) The wilhelm scream is a bit of an in joke in cinema too. A very large number of films contrive a way to shoehorn that exact scream into a film somewhere...
Maybe my favourite arcade game, definitely up there with 1942 and vulcan venture. If you stayed in one place too long on the arcade version black skeletons appeared, just for fun!
I just subscribed, i had this Nostalgia of Golden Axe, what i can say is this: Awsome Video! The only part i might a bit disagree, is that the best version, was on MS-DOS not Genesis, it was more geniune there, the sound the graphics, and gameplay, everything was consistent! Just the ending didnt have the explosion of the arcade's cabinet, but it had the music, and a script! Not that the Genesis version was bad, but if you actually started playing it on a Pentium 286, (back in 1991 or 92)on MS DOS, and then you played it on Genesis, huge difference! MS-DOS by far!!! It felt magical!
I thought the DOS version was pretty good but I thought it only used one fire button which hindered the controls. The graphics and sounds were really good. Thanks for subscribing :-)
Golden Axe was another one of my favorite fantasy genre video games growing up in the 80's and playing it in the arcades. You didnt review it in the video but on the Xbox Live Arcade you can buy all 3 Golden Axe Games Digitally for $9.99. It's called the Sega Vintage Collection Golden Axe. They are also the arcade ports on the Xbox 360. Sega's recently announced the Sega Astro Mini Arcade which for the 1st time ever will release the arcade version of Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder! Cool Stuff! Thanx for the video!
It's really cool that the third game is finally getting a home release. The Sega vintage collection I don't think was available when I made the video. Thanks for the info
There is an Amiga 500 game called "Take e'm out" This also featured a sound sample from First Blood when Will Teasle falls through the glass ceiling at the end.....Yas!
I played the heck out of it on the Sega CD. Took the music off the CD to put on cassette and drove around in my 66 Mustang listening to the tunes of this, Gauntlet IV, Rocket Knight Adventures, Outrun and the 32X Afterburner. Fun times and no cell phones and no quarantines.
documentaries blue coup, 3 speed in the floor! Also blasted to the Beetlejuice soundtrack and Damn Yankees before the car just wouldn't work anymore... my dad and I were going to try and bring it back and he kept it for a long time, but he finally sold it around 2006 or so... miss that car. If my dad knew how I drove that thing back THEN he'd have my tail NOW at 47...
This game took a lot of my quarters back in the day! Wow the sound from Rambo! That is cool. Being a kid playing this game I was always The Dwarf Thunder Head as he was smaller than anyone else! Glade to hear that was the strongest character in the game! Little me would be so happy I actually chose wisely! Playing this game on the Genesis is the best! I get my nostalgia out of beating up on those gnomes! When ever someone asked, What You Doing? My response would be "Beating up Gnomes!" Over time "Beating Up Gnomes" became my only answer!
Playing as Centauress arcade was my fav. I think that was for golden axe 2? I loved played this arcade so much and wasted so many quarters. Wanted this so badly on console back in the day just play Centauress, even if she felt the centauress was kinda weak. But she was cool imo. (Mare Centaur). Hah missed this arcade game. Did any consoles/port ever have Centauress as playable charter? Miss this game. I don’t think they ever did. Was on only arcade? There is not enough good centaur games imo. Maybe one day, somebody will make RPG/Good story/Adventure where choose from stallion/mare centaur as main charter. (Witcher 3/skyrim like/mass effect like) Thanks for videos. Brings me back :)
