I hate the way they sidelined Madison when they did trios. I always thought Madison was the most beautiful one. I think Bratz sometimes sidelined Sasha as well. Ironic considering both of these doll lines were made to be more diverse for the time but the one black doll would often get overlooked.
Once Mattel shifted the brand's focus to South America and Europe, Madison went to the backburner. They did the same for Kiyoni Brown in Flavas' European releases. It was really unfortunate...
They used to do that with Barbie too from time to time, e.g. it was either Kira or Christie along Barbie in the line and later Christie or Lea. The fact that Kira appeared mostly in budget lines is also rather suspicious.
I agree, it was a major reason why I didn't buy anything out of Mattel for a few years, aside from the cost. I'm glad things are much better for their current doll line, but this was a major area of contention for me.
Mattel not reproducing/rebooting or even acknowledging My Scene is not only a missed opportunity as My Bling Bling repros would sell like hot cakes but is also massively disappointing. While there was genuine passion on the creatives' side of My Scene, you can really tell that the brand was just used as a tool to compete with MGA, as soon as Bratz was dead, My Scene was basically killed of along with them😭 Besides that you can really tell that My Scene played some MAJOR influence in Monster High. This line often goes underappreaciated and marked off as a Bratz rip-off but it truly is so much more than that and really holds its own! My Scene also introduced a lot of features into the doll world and also executed a lit of things better than their competition! The fashion doll world would be quite different without them:) Anyways, this series was everything and I deeply appreciate you making this happen and doing it justice!
My Scene really was under appreciated for its time - the level of detail, even for more "budget" lines, was incredible! It's interesting to see the evolution of Mattel's product lines like Diva Starz, Generation Girl, My Scene, Monster High, etc. and how Mattel refined them iteratively and carried over what worked to future projects.
Honestly, this was a great way to end off the series! Even if My Scene did run its course, I believe they ended the brand gracefully, but why they decided to sideline Delancey and Madison after 2009, I don’t know, but it wasn’t necessary. That whole trademark situation with Mattel atm is honestly sad, not only did they REMOVE old uploads of the My Scene webisodes, but they are also REMOVING Etsy listings of custom clothes made for THEIR dolls?! Mattel is really doing the most 🙄
After 10 or so years, they decide to claim all the videos?! That too for a long defunct brand that they've distanced from Barbie...it's really something!
I'm so happy you released part 4! Mattel dropping the only doll of color during this final phase was one of many whitewashing tricks I noticed they were doing with a bulk of their playlines during the end of the 2000s into the early 2010s. Aside from rising costs, it was a big factor in why I didn't buy anything from Mattel until a few years ago. Their current doll line is more diverse than ever before, so it's easy today for me to find dolls that look like people I know, but back then, it was really bad. I'm not surprised My Scene only existed to fight MGA, but at the same time, I am surprised by how quickly it wound down. I never had these dolls, but this series gave me a new perspective on them that I didn't have before. I remember parents swearing My Scene and Bratz were extremely sexual because they looked ethnic and wore makeup, but looking back as an adult, the fashions weren't really age inappropriate the way some of today's LOL dolls are. Some of the concepts are downright wholesome, so I'm unlearning a lot of sexism that was fostered onto me because of these videos. I'm also surprised nobody noticed Barbie dating River behind Ken's back. Was she just treated as an unrelated Barbie to the main play line?
It's really interesting to see these older brands with a modern lens - especially now that issues of racism, sexism, and body image are more openly discussed. As for the Barbie-Ken relationship, I always saw the Barbie spinoff lines as alternate universes to the mainline "Malibu" Barbie. That too, it was around this was around the time that Mattel really wanted to give Barbie a "cooler" boyfriend - so Ken was sadly an afterthought to River and Blaine.
You did them justice 😢 I loooove my scene and enjoyed every single part of the series 😭 sadly it ended on a low note but at least here in Mexico we got them till the end. Thank you for your dedication, research and creativity to produce these series, I’ll be rewatching them many times
It's a shame they never gave the my scene dolls a proper send-off (I mean even Generation Girls kind of got one) I mean they could have done a graduation line even bring back the retired characters (just for final minisode even)
Seeing that Monster High was launched in 2010 my sense has definitely had served their purpose and with monster high being popular once launched cause they were so different then any dolls that we've ever seen at the time.
You did great on depicting My Scene's history from its debut in 2002 to its end in 2011. I just really wish and hope Mattel would one day revive this doll line so it can be enjoyed by toy reviewers, bloggers, and young buyers alike all over again.
All of your comprehensive doll histories are absolute perfection. I love your use of old commercials in the videos. You channel is one of my favorites on RU-vid, fulfilling and extreme niche and preservation of history with these dolls.
Mattel really fumbled a bag bc for sure, had they released a 20th anniversary line or a full on revival for My Scene the way MGA did for Bratz, millennials and elder gen z would have shown up and SPENT. I'm still holding out for it to happen one day. I think it would be one of the smartest moves for Mattel since what they have currently is lacking. Little girls and boys want fashion dolls! Barbie Extra just doesn't cut it. Bring back My Scene! 😭😭
The difference the CEO of MGA has a “passion for fashion” lol and has said he will always be indebted to the Bratz. (From his interviews) so he and his team have a personal interest in bringing them back. Yes, they make money and of course no company would make a product unless that’s happening as well, but Mattel seems to be jaded with myscene. It was a means to an end (competing in the doll world at that time) and were very happy to go back to their roots/work on monster high. Mattel has a loyalty to original Barbie.
hopefully they could release repros/special editions to celebrate the 25th anniversary of My Scene, since Bratz just released reissues/repros for the 20th anniversary if Mattel did the same it would be like reigniting the feuds.
Thank you for these videos. Part of the reason why Mattel wants some older Media gone is because everyone involved in the making of it like voice actors, script writers, animation studios might want to retroactively claim a per centage of $$$ made off of it. Back when physical media was a thing those were a one and done deal but now with streaming it has muddied the waters. I know a lot of fans would like for a continuation or reproduction of My Scene to be made, but I disagree. I'd rather have the legacy be left untainted than have a low quality cash grab riding the wave of fan nostalgia be made available on Mattel Creations. We all know it's gonna be overpriced crap, let's be honest.
After watching all four parts, I feel that some changes in the doll line I can understand, and others were completely unnecessary. For example, slowly getting rid of some of characters/dolls, especially Madison, Bryant, Nolee, etc was pretty lame. I now get that they added Barbie to get little girls to notice my scene, but it’s still weird that Kennedy is taking Barbie’s place. Although I like My Scene, I think Mattel really could’ve came up with their own Ideas instead of wasting their time with MGA. Then again I don’t anything about business
We missed you so much ❤️ and I really hate how they did my girl, Madison at the end. Edit: I see why the Monster High line was so similar to My Scene because of that.
@@HaveYouHeardDolls Ikr? Madison is one of the best My Scene girls around. If My Scene does make a comeback in the near future, they will have doll lines that feature her more.
A diva stars deep dive would be fun seeing that they were first interactive dolls from 1998-2002 I think they then added the fashion dolls tourds the end which was the diva stars down fall
ahhh I want them back haha. its weird how expensive they can be online when virtually no one actually collects them. MH is soo similar to my scene in many ways, especially 2010-2011 MH dolls. it would be cool if you could do monster high in the future though im not sure how that would go as everyone and their mom talks about MH these days, but im sure youll be able to find some information the general public may not know haha. amazing video :D
A great end to the series, thank you for your effort! Def gonna re-watch everything tonight 🥰The random Russian Kennedy is so puzzling - why? And where can I get her now , preferably for uner $200? Lmao. Such a strange brand. Can't deny its cultural relevancy and yet it seems like they have been majorly forgotten both by Mattel and doll collectors alike. More and more lines are becoming scarce on the second hand market and you keep seeing more lines being priced above $100 and yet it's so difficult to come across someone who collects them. Most of the times they're mentioned it's when Bratz are discussed. I wish I could come across more people who have fond memories of them and don't care for the reason they were created. I genuinely never cared about that drama. My Scene, especially the first 3-5 years were so beautifully designed and there was so much thought and heart put into them, real shame the way Mattel just killed them off as soon as Bratz no longer had any grip on the market. Thank you for this retrospective, hopefully more people will fall in love with them now (and drive up their prices lol)
This was a super well done series and I absolutely loved it! I learned so much and it reminded me of why my scene was yes, inspired by Bratz, but they were NOT copies. They had their own unique look and style and I love the dolls I have even more and plan to complete my collection with the dolls I never knew existed. Again, this was an incredible series.
I never knew that my scene lasted until 2011 cause I remember the early years of my sense along with the bling bling area as well but anything afterwards I never knew it stay until the early 2010a
loved this series! and all your videos always so well researched and thought out. have you started on another series? have you ever considered doing barbies fashion fever era / cali girl ?
Omg yes!! Please mattel, make them come back 😭😭😭 But I agree with others, last years without Madison and Delancey were kind of disappointing 😔 After all the first squad was best, same as their animation, but the later ones.. and Nia? Who is she 😅
such an interesting end. in a way, leaving people in dissatisfaction, but yet myscene lives on ! or i guess some myscene genes got passed down in the mattel doll family tree :P thank you for this series !!! doll history should always be archived and documented by a person who’s passionate about dolls, not a tiktok user who found out about the dolls through tiktok a few days before making their 1 minute video
What I love most about doll history is how brands can capture the zeitgeist of its time and the youth culture associated with it. You can really tell with My Scene's aesthetic shifts how times were changing.
I love Cali girl and myscene it kinda makes sense how Barbie had to leave myscene and got replaced by Kennedy who I think stole her boyfriend....👁👄👁 like even now that I watch myscene I can't tell if it's Barbie of Kennedy... And tbh I do like Barbie more than Bratz she is better and always will be and u just have to deal with it. Btw if u play flash games and compare the Bratz games to the my scene games my scene will win I love Bratz too but the truth is that Barbie is just way more fun....
