I remember the day I saw this game at the arcade. I was blown away as a 10-year-old. I also recall thinking this was way too violent and "adult" for me to be watching, let alone playing. But I played anyway, of course. Narc really paved the way for games like "MK", "Pit Fighter", and "Crime Fighters"- all super violent games that were unlike anything else in the arcade.

"Street Fighter" vs. "Mortal Kombat" (violence in video games; would this cause children/teens to commit crimes IRL ? I don't think so.; "Smash TV" arcade game: the concept has to be from the Ahnold movie, "The Running Man (1987)". a game like "Carmageddon," "Castle Wolfenstein," Doom," or "Duke Nuke'm"was a predecessor to RockStar Games "Grand Theft Auto (GTA)" video game series. on the NARC game... I just remembered the "Just Say No (to drugs)" Nancy Reagan commercial; the eggs in a frying pan commercial ("This is your brain on drugs. Any questions ?"); the D.A.R.E program. "Crime Wave (1990)" was similar to "Mean Streets (1989: featuring private detective Tex Murphy)" (access software inc.)

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries It wasn't bad, but others ragged on it being inspired by GTA. The big temptations were to avoiding using drugs so you wouldn't get addicted (they would boost your fight abilities, but you would need either more of a particular drug or methadone later) or try to sell what you took off crooks and punks for cash. Often you could stop robbers or other pushers for cash, weapons or drugs. Depositing drugs at the police station improves your standing; use or criminal action demoted you to uniform cop, or worse, bum. But the better you improve your standing, the more you get "cleaned up."

this was once a very common arcade game at most arcades (at one time, there were at least 3 possibly 4 in m town alone) these have become super rare in working "original" condition is very rare. The weak point is the monitor, the game requires a special "medium-res" monitor that is incredibly rare and only a small number of mostly much less common arcade games actually used this sort of "medium-res" monitor and using the incorrect resolution CRT will make the game not appear correctly (though using certain types of newer LCDs will often work fine due to their variable resolution). Most restorations of NARC are forced to use modern LCDs as replacing the monitor with a working and correct resolution CRT is almost impossible now-a-days.

From some of the playthroughs I've seen, 50 is the limit of busts on a level. Once you get to 50, then you just blast everyone else otherwise (Joe Rockhead, Kinky Pinky and Sgt. Skyhigh are "must blast" enemies). 50 gets you to "two and a half men" (two extra lives and halfway to a third), so the more lives you can rack up before facing Mr. Big the better. Kinky Pinky is like the "Lander" from "Defender" kidnapping innocents; you must blow away Kinky before he gets the victim away to his porn empire. (It's also fun on "the bridge" to run down Kinky with the Porsche or the pushers.)

Eugene’s nightclub pointed out in this video is actually the Fireside Bowl, bowling alley in Chicago Illinois. Located at 2648 West Fullerton Ave. A few minutes drive away is 3401 North California, where work on some Midway games was done. Motion capture work for the original Mortal Kombat was done here. Also, the building is seen in footage of Brett The Hitman Hart entering to do motion capture for a video game. This was a Midway facility until the 2000’s. It is currently occupied by a company that makes video gambling machines. Nether Realm Studios (which is the current studio responsible for creating Mortal Kombat) is now located just a few blocks away at 2650a W Bradley Pl, Chicago, IL.

Nice little fun fact. I never recognized Fireside in Narc after being there countless times for shows. There was a locally famous hotdog stand across the street from the old Midway offices I used to frequent for lunch and run into Midway employees before it turned into WMS Games.

@@dethfactorYes. Hot Doug’s. One of my friends worked on the Sub Zero game there. I saw some shows at the Fireside in the 90’s/00’s before they fixed it up and got it up and running again. @@dethfactoroooo. Another thing…I was watching a video on the Galloping Ghost Arcade in Brookfield and the guy that owns it was saying they did an anniversary event there where they got a bunch of programmers and motion capture actors and whomever. He said that one of the people gave him a level they left out of the game because it kept crashing the game. They left it out, but he completed it later and brought the chip to the arcade owner. So they have it. I don’t know if they installed it or not, he didn’t say or I don’t remember it right now. That’s what brought me to this video. Apparently you fly a helicopter in it!

Supposedly at the Galloping Ghost Arcade theres a prototype version of NARC that was given to the owner by Eugene Jarvis himself. The game features a extra bonus stage that was cut out of the final version of the game where you take control of a helicopter. This version is also not on MAME.

Excellent! a Patman video is always great to see, but it's even sweeter when it's covering one of my favourite arcade stress-relievers of all time in NARC! Not only was the gameplay an addicting and fun update of the venerable side-scrolling blaster with violence at a whole new level, the AUDIO! My ghod, some of the best sample work of the era was done in this game. I'd try my best to make the high score list JUST to hear that amazing closing song. "Oh no the narcs, mang! oh no no no no no the narcs mang!" Absolute gold. The only thing to hold against it was kind of unfair because it's exactly as designed: a total quarter muncher. This game is HARD, Hard as the rigid shaft of Satan himself. Even the tactic of ducking shots only gets you so far, so you better farm up all the busts for extra men you can on the first couple of levels because that's the last freebies you're gonna see in this monster unless you set it to cheat mode. Great video as always Patman! I didn't even know there WAS a European release for the Amstrad and the ancient Speccy, but the Spectrum version actually looks great for that machine even if it is likely unplayably slow. Thanks for the thorough coverage and giving Eugene Jarvis the props he deserves!

I couldn't have said it better. That is why I had to include the actual theme both from the arcade machine as well as the fantastic Amiga version. There were only a few games back in the day that I liked their soundtracks so much that I put them on cassette tape and Narc along with streetfighter 2 Were pretty much the only ones.. The spectrum is really good although a bit on the slow side. Graphics are very detailed. The 64 version plays really good with fantastic audio

I *still* can't believe a game as shockingly sadistic bloody and tasteless like Chiller was allowed to be released to public arcades in the mid '80s. To quote someone named James Rolfe, "WHAT were they thinking?!?..." 😮😏

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-DocumentariesI disagree. The Genesis came to America in 1989 and got plenty of ports from the Arcades in like 1990, 1991 and 1992. Like I know Ghouls and Ghosts came to the Genesis in 1991. I don't think the Genesis (or the TG16) was on many American developers minds until Sonic and the system exploded in sales. After that you saw a lot more developers making games for the system.

Thank goodness for you, Patman. Right now on RU-vid there is content that makes you feel really low*. ( *Seriously, what on Earth is going on?? ) THEN I saw you just posted a new video, and I feel better right away! 😸 Oh, I remember this one all right, I immediately started pumping quarters into it faster than my character was shooting on the screen! It was fast, it was loud, and you got to blow away bad guys by the dozen! The Gaming Convention looks like an absolute blast, incidentally I'm going to see the Vocaloid 'Hatsune Miku' at the time of the convention. Thanks again for all the hard work, editing and such, I know it isn't easy; I once made a Visual Novel and it took me over 2 months.

NARC always stood out in the arcade too. It drew you in with the black cabinet but also the violence and the real-life message about drugs. I was a kid in the 80s, so I got hit hard with anti-drug PSAs and tv specials. My school also had D.A.R.E. So when I would go to the arcade, the impression I got from NARC was "whoa 😲 This game is serious" LOL

That's too cool that they were willing to be interviewed to contribute information to the show which means they have trust in you and appreciate the videos. Narc is another one similar to Bad Dudes where it's crazy that it got an NES release and not a Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo port when they are more capable systems. I had never heard of Crime Wave and may need to try that one out soon but that NES version by Rare was a classic that I played a lot as a kid and teenager. 😄

The Power Team was good in that it showed Max able to lead his fellow teammates (Tyrone, Kuros and Qwirk) without needing to get needlessly violent. They cleaned up Joe and Spike to make it able to pass muster with the Moral Watchdogs of the 80s.

Great video Pat - brings back many memories of hammering this on my Amstrad CPC464 whilst looking on enviously at my friend's Amiga 500 version! Just fyi it's actually phonetically "Pomp-eee" and not "Pomp-pay" - it's a city called Portsmouth on the South Coast of England, although it's quite sketchy as to why it's nicknamed "Pompey" but the earliest written reference is to the local football team who, to this day, still use the reference in their chants ("play up Pompey!").

Great work covering the history of the game NARC! I have for long just wondered why they never made any 16-bit ports for the SNES and the Mega Drive/Genesis (?) especally since Acclaim liked to publish as much as possible. I remember even believing there was ports on the systems - at least for Sega, but as I got older I learned that never happend (for some odd reason).
