Part 2 of a educational series I'm doing on the history of salsa dancing. This second video delves into the rise of mambo in the United States. Mambo is considered by many to be the father of salsa. www.nysalsa101.com

It could be analyzed, salsa is played with Cuban musical instruments, 8 out of 10 musical rhythm that compose salsa are Cuban, the orchestra format to play salsa are Cuban, the rhythm of Tumbao mach with Cuban Son, no one have found the differences between the salsa and Cuban music. you can find music like you define as salsa played by Cuban in Cuba 1940's and it is pretends to make me to believe salsa came up in New York by 1970s, and one of the "founders" says he played all time Cuban music. LOL.

@yoelalmira All those names are African. Guaracha, Guaguanco, changui. Even the name Cumbia is the Spanish way of pronouncing the old West African dance and music called CUMBE. Ask an African who knows his music. They laught when mentioned Salsa is Cuban. Cubans were the first to start doing it with Eurpean Instruments and on the radio due Cuba had one of the first radio stations in Latin America. It could also be heard in Florida on non stormy nights. So Americans started listening to Cuba

2:26 its Hustle Dancing but at 2:29 That is not Hustle, but Disco Dancing moves from the movie Saturday Night Fever, which some non popular silly ways were shown by John Travolta to exalt that character and add some Free Style Dance (but bs) to the plot. No one does that on Hustle Dancing and I have been to over 100 of those dances since 2004. Hustlers do laught at that though of doing that kind of Free Style Disco Dancing.

DonR: No, it is not fair for you to say Salsa's grandparents were Cuban. Because when the Puerto Ricans from New York stole the Cuban Mambo and changed the name into Salsa, there is no more dance for the Cuban Mambo to be identified with. This is what happened recently, the D.J. had to announce both Mambo and Salsa for the music he is gong to play, and your partner always asked you on 1 or on 2 ? I am sick of being asked whether I am on 1 or on 2. All I want is to dance the God-damned dance.

@rotena25 I agree with you, the reason why latin ballroom is because of cuban music, but they make sure they removed all black or african thing, cause the white people wont buy dancing stuff that has lots of black thing in it. Racism is what made Latin Ballroom flourish when no latin people really dance ballroom that style..

Dude: You are totally remiss and historically inaccurate when you mention that mambo was introduced at the Palladium in 1947. While some Cuban and Puerto Rican dancers might have already been dancing steps that came to be mambo, you totally ignore the essential contribution that it was Mexican films, the preeminent films serving the Spanish-speaking community around the world that brought Cuban music and performers throughout the world. It was 1950, when Perez Prado appeared in Mexican

NYsalsa101: Salsa is considered by many to be the thief of Mambo !

Narrator - Dancing culture is always consider a-tiempo, and contra-tiempo. This On1 and On2 sytem is dseigned by the Americans studios; Btw Mambo is not haphazard, Mambo is always 1-3 (a-tiempo) on the downbeat. Doesnt matter where you start. The On2 is based on tumbao hit; but to tell you the truth Tumbao never starts on2, the start on the 4 or 8 on the lower pitch conga. Piano also never starts on 1 or on 2, they pitched in late. Check with a Latin percussionists or a musician.

But even if most of the Rhythm names are African sounding, the Cuban and some Puerto Rican refinements are the ones that created the styles that we enjoy today as Salsa. Cuba is rich in talents as well as Puerto Ricans too. Incredible those two small islands have created so many music styles, famous all over the rest of the world. They are often called Sister Islands due they share so much music. I heard other musicians say Cuba and Puerto Rico creates, the world takes.

That comment makes no sense. Obviously you've never been to Cuba or Puerto Rico. Africans comprise the people of those islands

@@dogace Bullshit. I lived in PR 31 years. And actually PR's are mostly white or brown. Not like the other islands which are mostly black. Im a commercial pilot.
