A gem of a video I found at 2AM going down the youtube rabbit hole. I grew up in Dowagiac and remembered dashing to South Bend with friends as the thing to do....looking fwd to watching more and fondly remembering those days. Thank you MM.
Hi from the UK and thanks for another interesting video of South Bend Railroads. I'm looking very forward your presentation of the South Shore in South Bend. I know there will have been reasons, but to close a Rapid Transit Rail line between South Bend and Chicago always seems like a not very good idea to me.
It still runs between South Bend International Airport (Just west of South Bend) and Chicago. Eliminated was the downtown South Bend station which was mostly street running in town which will be the subject of the new videos.Be sure and check out the existing videos on that airport spur.
Hi, thank you for your reply. I have a photo-book by William D Middleton 'The South Shore' (which I imported from the States) and 'CSS&SB in Colour V.1' by Kevin J Holland. This latter book has some real good photos by Tony Koester and others of LaSalle Street etc. The South Shore Trains seem to fit-in just right there (also, there is a 'Hotel Michiana' shown) I have read about plans to re-route the Airport Line from the Westside and extend the NICTD closer to South Bend, near to an Amtrak Station. A video about that would be good to learn from, if ever you are able to find the time, thankyou. @@michianamainlines3538
@@michianamainlines3538 Looking at a modern day satellite image it appears that the original GTW line through town had street running. Now Amtrak wants to run the length of the South Shore to South Bend to obviate NS’ Chicago line in and out of Chicago.
Good question. Top of my head. Lydick SS&S bridge abutments chicago line. Michigan city abandoned coal tower. And Elkhart Amtrak station remains of steam water pipes.
@@michianamainlines3538 thanks, I'll Google them now and see if I can find them. I think the swinging bridge in Michigan City, and the Roundhouse in Niles are pretty interesting.
