It's a clear sign of a skilled storyteller when salt can make these documentaries so fascinating to viewers like myself who haven't played videogames since they were kids and in my case have never speed run games . Summoning salt has built such an speedrunner’s video doc universe that Matt Turk appearing at anytime is believable even if it doesn’t make sense

I love how we all collectively accepted for a few moments that Matt Turk actually speedran this game. This man is so infamous for beating people's asses in speedrunning that he could be do anything and we'd all believe him.

As a history major and history enthusiast I looove that you explain your sources and why some sources were included and why others were not. Then also addressing the limitations of various sources (this run had no video, this run we know happened because this community spoke of the live stream, etc) Like this is really good historical theory

So that maybe some people see it. It has been found out that Tsukashima has been splicing his runs through cstching blinking cycles. His world records were spliced and has since been removed from the leaderboaed

I love the personality contrast between Kanno getting his world record and nearly/actually crying in happiness and Slipperynip beating his record and just going "alright"

My guy takes speedrunning, and turns it into an emotional movie. There is so much effort put in these videos.

It's so fascinating to see the skill floor rise in these highly competitive speedruns. At the beginning you can mess up movement and miss a Bowser throw. By the end, mess up even the simplest thing and you're out of the running.

A closely kept secret in speedrunning is that every top runner is just Matt Turk in disguise

Any time Summoning Salt says the words “Matt” and “Turk” together, it doesn’t matter what else he says, I will be on the edge of my seat ready to believe anything he tells me

You know Matt turk is a powerful person when I am told he broke the 16 minute barrier in a game he hadn't been running prior and actually believe it for a minute

I feel bad for KANNO though. Man spent 3000 hours streaming trying to get that WR. You can see the relief of that man. Then Slipperynip just went "wow alright. cool. sweet" 🤣

One of my favorite moments in these videos is when the wall of focus and determination breaks down to make way for the tidal wave of emotions when a record is set. I get the feels every time...then there's slipperynips who is like "ok, cool." What a legend!

The fact that summoningsalt and company managed to piece together legitimate record holders when there was over 10 years of splicers holding the record is nuts. There wasnt a single leaderboard like there is now so I'm not even sure how they did it.

He's been reading off these names for years like they are the official titles of historical figures, and finally he just couldn't help but acknowledge that "slipperynip" is, in fact, a ridiculous thing to say out loud

4 days ago, Suigi broke his own world record by an even faster run. I've watched the original Suigi run so many times thinking it'd be unbeatable, but this guy just keeps coming at it. This is probably the most perfect run I've seen by far.

We absolutely NEED new videos that update the SM64 times with GreenSuigi's times. In fact, GreenSuigi needs his own entire video

So you’re telling me, KANNO had a stream where he played nothing but SM64 until he got the WR?!? The stream was 3,066 hours, which is 127 days ~4 months. The level of commitment these guys have in speed running is something I desire in daily life.

Matt Turk built different

Salt knows his memes he made, and I have a grudging respect for that. Even if my neck hurt from my reaction from hearing Turk's name. Edit: Probably would have been more believable for longer if the mentioned player were instead, like, Alex Penev or Dan Burbank.

It took me a while to open up the Summoning Salt door but man, this video makes me glad I finally did! You put so much passion into speedrunning's lore, advancements and characters that it feels cinematic. Top it with an non-intrusive but groovy soundtrack and you get a masterclass of storytelling, which I've probably watched through several times already. I'm feverishly waiting for the next video, but looks like I got a catalogue to work through! Keep it up, you legend!

Honestly, I would love to see a Quake Speedrun history. Demos allowed people to watch speedruns from their very conception. Plus Quake speedrunning led to speeddemosarchive and all that entailed. I think it would be a great video.

Fun fact: The moment this video was posted, SM64 had about 2000 current viewers on twitch. About an hour afterwards (presumably when people had finished the video), it jumped up to over 40,000.

Slipperynips reaction at the end is so perfect. This video really puts into perspective how insane of a record it is. After all these years matching damn near perfection on a game as complex as sm64 in celebration of such an amazing run we get a "Wow. Alright cool. Sweet."
