The History Of Suzuki's RMX250 1989-1998

This is a look back at the evolution of Suzuki's RM250-based Enduro models from the late eighties and nineties. Offered for sale from 1989 through 1998 in the USA, The RMX was a cutting-edge off-road racer at its launch which powered Randy Hawkins to several AMA National 250 Enduro titles. Choked off in stock conditioned, the RMX250 became a potent racer with a few simple mods.

The RMX250 is one of my all time favorite looking off-road bikes. I had a ‘89 & 91 RM125, so was a fan of all their bikes especially the RMX. it’s a Timeless bike IMHO.

Agreed 100% on the looks Tony, that 1990 RMX is probably the best looking off-road motorcycle ever created. God I was so depressed when Suzuki went off the deep end a few years later 😆

Agree they looked much better than the RMs in the early 90s. These RMXs turned out to be cool for a different reason here in draconian California.... My buddy had one and the VIN# made them possible to be registered for the street if someone wanted to do a little extra work. They made cool plated 2 strokes in California.

I was a bike mech when these were out in Australia, the early gens were never a big seller as they were not registerable here and therefore you may as well just have the RM. Then in 96 we got a registerable version and that was a big seller but in typical suzuki fashion not great out of the box. Biggest prob was the horrible kiehin PJ carb with the idle circuit on the choke knob. Impossible to get a clean idle and crisp bottom end with that turd. Fit a kiehin PWK carb in its place and it was a night and day difference. Not only way better drive of the bottom but measurably better fuel range along with it. Funnily enough suzuki Australia secured from somewhere a heap of new stock 92 models and we now had brand new 92 and 96 models side by side on the floor and suddenly everybody wanted the much cheaper 92 model. You only had to look at a 92 model the wrong way and a fork seal would blow!

I had a 98 and loved it , bought it new ,, stock it would crawl like a 4 stroke up steep slick hills that was really unbelievable that it would make it ,, i put a pro circuit pipe and silencer on it , then it was like a do it all machine ,, i could loft the front wheel anytime i needed to and really just loved it ,, i thought about a 3 wheel conversion before i sold it ,, i have a neck and back injury at happened in 2000 after i bought it ,, i set the suspension really soft so i could still ride gas well roads and some trail stuff ,, i think this bike was very under sold , it was great. Came with a manual that illustrated full tear down for everything, swingarm and linkage was greaseable. This is the bike most people need and dont know it,, a 6th gear would've been a big boost

Thanks Tony, great wrap up. A good friend of mine had the 96 model jer in Australia (Suzuki cared more over here by the sounds!) and absolutely loved it. I always thought it was a great looking bike and he took it everywhere without issue. I always thought bikes like that are a great step up from 125s - the flavour of a 250 without the savagery. Would love something like that for my wife who's outgrown her 01 cr125 but is scared of my yz250.

I'm building a 1989 YZ250. Checked the frame number and shows it as a 1989, but the rear wheel is a 18inch, should be 19inch. The wheels are not original rims (excel). Going on the engine can I tell if it's yz or wr motor? The engine number is:3JE-00B101. Frame:JYA3JEW01KA008101. Cheers

I had a 96 RMX in 97. It was great in the tight woods with a short wheelbase, nice suspension for tree roots and rocks, smooth power and a pretty light feeling bike. But it was a nervous little girl on a Motocross Track. Well, on a MX track, that is what the bike turned me into anyway. I replaced it with a milder 97 KX250 in 98. lol

Watch the vid! I guess the question should have been, when did the RMX go back to standard forks? It was my first interest in an enduro type bike. I don't think I have ever seen a manufacture go back to traditional forks before.

Kinda funny story too. That was the only bike I sold using a model in the pick for "wheels and keels", or any advertisement. I met a good looking gal a week before, and asked her is she would wear a bikini swim suite and model with the bike, and she did. It was set at an average price for that publication and printed for 2 weeks. I only got one call; sold it to a Preachers son. :) True story.

Tony, What are the power valve stops you are referring to in this video? I'm rebuilding a 93 USA P model. The only thing I've read on the power valves is the pin in the center plate breaking and the center plate falling into the cylinder. I'm considering going to 93 RM power valves and guides. I hope you get this message and can responde with some relevant information. Best regards. Jeff Davison, Saginaw, Michigan.

They do they have just given up entirely on dirt bikes they only care about the GSXR models now and even that barely. They have made terrible bikes for so long they got very lucky with who raced dirt bikes for them a few times in the last 25 years that helped keep sales alive but on quality alone they would have died decades ago.

Hey Toni nice vid mate I had a 1991 RMX250 I hated it the tank when full made it really ungainly especially in the air, I thought the HP was good but here in NZ we didn't have the US restrictions so it was probably a bit more free flowing. But no for me it's the worst bike I have ever owned just due too it's unreliable characteristics I never new what it was going to do once you got her into the air. I no its not a moto X bike but I rode allot of fast open country and this bike really sucked.

My friend owns the 1998 model (To be exact it looks like the 1989 with the plastics but it is the 1998 version of it). Pretty fast machine, But nothing that will scare you. The torque and mid power is pretty good but on higher rpm's the RMX lies down flat on the power. In other words ''Typical Suzuki power''. It's cind of heavy in general. The bike is about 120kg wet. Combine that with 40,3 rear wheel hp and you get a pretty ''mellow'' power. Still strong, But that extra weight is not helping in the power department. But for driveability it's awesome to have that extra weight. It's steady and smooth on the gravel roads. In my opinion it's cind of hard to set the best gearing just because of the WR gearbox. Either you get the longest f*cking topspeed in history, Or you can get the shortest first gears in history. In general, It's a solid bike. Not perfect, But still awesome in it's own way.
