Unfortunately, not so many people know how rich the history of Thailand is! There are so many important aspects that we couldn’t include in a 10-minute video. We know that we did not focus so much on the ancient period, the migration of people, the large influence from India, Buddhism, and the very important trade with Indian Kingdoms, China, and even the Roman Empire. Also, Thailand managed to preserve its kingdom and didn't become a colony. We would like to include more details about those parts of history in our future videos. Thank you so much for watching and for supporting us!

You could have talked a little about the previous king Bhumibol, he made sure that the farmers in the North got oxes and tools to make farming food more profitable than farming Poppies for drugs. That was really needed and a lot of drugs used by American soldiers in Vietnam came from the North of Thailand. He is seen as a Saint in Thailand. But nice video!

This video is not so different from ministry of education's historiography. But as you've said, 10 minutes can only contain just a handful of information and you can't discuss many interesting things in Thai history anyway. In my opinion this seem dull.

As a Thai, I really do appreciate this video. However, to clarify some small mistake, it's Taksin not Taskin. Phraya is a higher ranking noble title in Siamese aristrocratic hierarchy, equivalent to Marquess or so. His birth name is Sin and was the lord governer of Tak province prior to the fall of Ayutthaya Kingdom. Thus, he was commonly known as Phraya Tak (Lord of Tak). Even though later proclaimed king and had his official royal name, he is still dubbed as King Taksin (a combination of his former title and his birth name) until this day and primary history books always refer to him as King Taksin which is quite a special case since most of Siamese/Thai kings are always referred to by their more official names not their birth names. (tbh, I have learnt his royal name once but totally forgot about it. It's super lengthy and full of auspicious Bali-Sanskrit words. We Thais know him as King Taksin anyway)

@ryuishisama5149
@ryuishisama5149 Год назад
@@patweethongsak7093 First of all, I admire a lot of his influence and capabilities, particular his diplomacy skills and international affairs ; Reflecting how Rama V handles colonization threats from 2 super powers. He also make good use of many people in the parliament and supports/advise some good politicians into power (Anan Panyarachun, Prem Tinsulanon, some others too much names) But what Thai’s are taught are kinda of an obvious propaganda ; that he directly develop the communities and civilizations himself. The famous ‘so-called’ 4,000 projects where he took all the credit can be criticized in many ways ; It’s still the government money/our tax, he uses his name and he solely take credits but it also takes lot’s of other people to help and even without him it should be government responsibility anyways, most of his 4,000 projects aren’t really impacting a large difference as some ‘projects’ are just building a dam or roads, basically he’s mostly just kinda advertise/promotes the event, which is actually useful, but overrated. That’s the main part where people adore him, which is in all ways a propaganda. Overly progressive university, Thammasat University’s students, have been accused of cooperating with the communist movements, which is like truth, also was rumored to attempt the abolish the monarchy, having nuclear weapons hidden in the university, and other stuff. The US government (Against communism) funded some support, the military, police, and many royalist groups (Nawaphon, Village Scouts, Red Gaurs) gather and storm the University (AKA Thammasat University Massacre), many students were killed, and their bodies became piñatas, so much gore and violence, so much hate, and the person behind this, who gathered and support the royalist groups, the police and military force, the US funds, was no other than King Rama IX, there are evidenced photos of him giving supports to these people. (This is kinda controversial, like to fight against communism threats, still, was the call to massacre students just?) When you say so many politicians ruin the country, so I assumed if that’s true he must try to stop them, but even those politicians don’t dare to go against him, I believed he didn’t really go against corruption or the real politicians or else there should be his opposites existing, or maybe he just took everyone out secretly. When Taksin Chinawatra came to power as PM, he was a populist and use many tactics to gain majority votes that seemed unfair, still he was a very effective leader and the economy boomed hard, this guy go against many ineffective bureaucratic affairs and was hated by many public officers. Many try to get the King to dislike him with rumours, but what he was accused was more of a ruse and fake ; rumors that he tryna overthrow the monarch, yet he bow and respect the King. The King also felt challenged because he’s the only PM he can’t really control, thus sparking the red-yellow shirt conflict. The current military dictator, Prayut Chan-Ocha who ousted Taksin’s sister, Yingluck Chinawatra, was also backed by the King. So probably the King never really fight these politicians or corrupted schemes, or else he would have face similar things Taksin did, or worse, these bureaucrats are actually his backs, the King himself knows how to play politics, so I guess rating him as a flawless hero was too much, he’s a well played politician, but still human to me and did lot’s of flaws. The worst thing he left Thai’s was no other than his corrupted family ; The Queen had far more presences in various dark affairs, his son, the current King Rama X, has the worst rumors of a human being possible, many of his family members have been involved in some shitty events. So.. yeah, he really have all the power, but these things still run, if he really fight against evil, as the propaganda have spoken, he wouldn’t be this overrated.

I feel like this documentary missed out a big part of South Asian and Hindu/Buddhist influences in Thailand which had a big impact on the culture of Thailand. The Myanmar people are not so fortunate. It is sad the Thai were not able to extend the western boundary all the way to the ocean. Thousands more people would be living a better life. From a topographical map it appears there is a 500-600 foot high ridge that the border was established along.

@@thecloud2750 Hi, I had to rewatch the video to remember what points there were. These are not exhaustive but they are: 1) At 5:43, the name of the Thai leader is "Taksin", not "Taskin". It was mispronounced and misspelled the whole way through. 2) I believe he mixed up the reasons for moving the capital from Ayutthaya to Thonburi with that of moving from Thonburi to Bangkok. First, Thonburi was downriver from Ayutthaya towards the sea, not just across the river (this is also reflected in the animation which should go south, not east). It was Bangkok that was just across the river from Thonburi. Second, the reasons for moving the capital was mostly for defensive reasons. Thonburi was harder to invade by land and had a port which could house warships. It also had a fort which made it easier to defend. The move to Bangkok was also for similar reasons, though also with more opportunity for expansion. 3)6:13 "Chao" is not a name, it is a title (full name Chao Phraya) similar to lord. He should have referred to him as General Chakri or something along that line. We also never call him King Yodfa but fully "Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke Maharaj". This is certainly a mouthful, so it is more common to call him Rama I (though he admittedly would not have called himself this) 4)7:07 Foreign powers did not "urge" King Mongkut to modernize and become like and equal. It was the king himself who recognized the risks of being surrounded by European powers and he was the one to initiate pushing for reforms. He taught himself English and pushed for the modernization of science, geography, and printing, just to name a few. 5) 7:55 While the British did help advise, a lot of it came from other countries as well. The Germans were mostly involved in the engineering, the French and Japanese in the legal codes, the Danish in the navy, etc. The Belgians and Americans also helped establish and run the Thai foreign ministry for some time. 6) 8:37 This is a misconception among Thais too, but Siam's participation in the war did not directly lead to the abrogation of treaties with Western powers. It took years of negotiation after the war, the first amendment being with the Americans in 1920. The last amendment was in 1926 (the British and French being one of the late ones) and it only came into effect by 1939. 7) 9:50 He didn't say this but the Prime Minister in question, Plaek Phibunsongkhram, was acquitted from that trial as public opinion was still on his side. This is also why he could become Prime Minister again through a coup from 1948-1957, Thailand's longest serving PM. 8)10:00 Everything from here is so rushed and skipped that it is egregiously inaccurate. Aside from the brief restoration of democracy in 1973, he completely skips over 1993 Black May Incident. It's conclusion led to Thailand's longest period of democracy from 1993-2014, the 1997 Asian Economic Crisis happening in the middle of it. This also means it skips the 2006 Coup which ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra but more importantly the 2014 Coup that ended Thailand's democratic period. The video also implied that the Crowning of King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) brought democracy back to Thailand, which it certainly did not. In fact, the new constitution in 2017 was not only regarded as a move to entrench the current government's power as opposed to restoring democracy, but part of a long list of constitutions that have been revoked and redrafted by various dictators and leaders in power to suit their agenda. I feel like the last one is a much more serious error as it simplifies to the point of misinforming the audience about what is actually going on in Thailand.

Thank you for your informed comment and truthfull critique. As you said, to imply the Thai people have won democratic gains under the new constitution of Rama X is a gross distortion of the autocratic reality of political and social relations of power in Thailand. I hope to see the monarchy abolished and the military monopoly on state power abolished for good during my lifetime. Thanks again!
