Actually, farmers in the Middle Ages wore colours such as white, gray, beige, black and especially brown in everyday clothing. Because these were colours that could be produced cheaply and without much effort or simply bleached. Intense red, green and blue, on the other hand, were intended for wealthy people and the nobility. Muted blues and reds could be made from native plants, but blue from indigo and red from purple snails were worth their weight in gold. Blue was worn by women not because the colour blue symbolized purity, but because blue was associated with women and red (even pink) with men. That only changed in the 1940s. In the Middle Age there were symbols other than the colour of clothing for chastity, such as open hair and the myrtle wreath for the bride. If the bride wasn't pure, she was not allowed to wear a wreath or even had to wear one made of hay so that everyone could see her shame.
