Thank god I wasn't the only one! This was my first Desolation of Smaug was my first LOTR/Hobbit movie (I had never had time to watch LOTR and my friends asked me to see this not telling me it was a LOTR based movie) so I watched this, thing that Bard WAS Orlando Bloom because that's what Orlando looked like when he played Will Turner and my friends thought I was weird for thinking that 😂 I'd never seen him as a blond so I didn't know
or when it shows Gandalf fighting the Balrog and he says "and at last I defeated my enemy and cast body upon the mountainside." then play the audio "that still only counts as one!" while the balrog fight continues
okay one more... in the preface, when galadriel says "sauron, the enemy of the free people of middle earth, was defeated"... "that still only counts as one!"
grima had half his screentime and dialogue. grima also wasnt as annoying as alfred and did his part in the story. alfred on the other hand is the jar jar of middle earth.
Ever since The Desolation of Smaug, I had a feeling Bilbo took the Arkenstone. Hey, if he could steal the One Ring from Gollum/Smeagul and the keys from under the nose of Thranduil's guards, he can certainly sneak the King's Jewel itself.
I have to say that Aragorn and Bard are my two favorites out of these entire series. Both good fighters, worth going into battle in and extremely hot!!!!
Alfrid was lucky that Bard was such an overly decent guy who wasn't vengeful like most people are. Just the night before he helped the Master throw Bard in jail for doing nothing wrong.
I love The Hobbit the Battle of the Five Armies I was confused to see the dragon again when it showed Bilbo Baggins had the Arkenstone the whole time but I realized it was just a flashback from the second film
When i saw the Arkenstone in Bilbo's pocket, i went "You invisibly swept the arkenstone away from Smaug and have been hanging on to it the whole time?!"
You're not the only one. Bilbo also had The One Ring on his finger when he picked up the Arkenstone, so now Thorin's got both the Arkenstone and The One Ring to obsess over even though neither Bilbo nor Thorin knows it is The One Ring Bilbo has picked up.
Why did PJ have to alter Legolas' personality so much? I know it was 60 years before LOTR but 60 years is nothing for an elf. Instead he is depicted as a character that we've seen in almost every movie: the jealous prince with daddy issues who lost his mother. Talk about myth breaking!
Actually, per the books, it's nearly 80 years between the two. The movies throw us for a loop in that it says "60 years earlier for the first Hobbit film". But that's 60 years before the BD party in FOTR. In the books Frodo waits 17 years to take the Ring down to Mordor. Unfortunately PJ doesn't like to have longer spans of time in his films, as short time spans are more adaptable for the big screen.
Billy Strickland I hate how throughout all the films, there is nothing to imply there is no 17 year gap. To anyone who doesn't know, it makes no difference. There was nothing to imply whether it was a few months or years or not ... except the end of this movie which they namedrop Aragorn for no reason. It's a massive "fuck you". It doesn't matter, but it changes something that I had perceived otherwise.
I mean you can say his journey and Aragon turned him into the Legolas of lotr. That's a lot of development off screen. I think people are to hung up on elves being immortal that they forget personal growth has nothing to do with that and mostly with experiences and interaction with the outside world. Look at Thranduil.
Desolation of Smaug was the first movie I had seen from this saga, so I honestly thought that Bard WAS Orlando Bloom. My friends then told me that it was actually Legolas who was Orlando and I didn't believe them until they zoomed in on his face and said "That guy (the actor who plays Bard) looks MORE like Orlando Bloom than Orlando Bloom!
Good quality vids. Might I suggest the dimril gate scene, where they're blockading it? Haven't been able to find it and its b greatly appreciated, and enjoyed
I feel like bilbo having the arkenstone should’ve been revealed later on in the movie! So I would’ve felt like more of a plot twist! Like I feel like the scene where he’s sitting right at the front gate and recalls the previous night with Smaug, and then takes the arkenstone out of his pocket, revealing that he has it would’ve worked perfectly right after those 2 scenes where thorin yells at Bilbo, dwalin and Balin, and then right after that when Balin tells Bilbo it is best it remains lost!
They should have made the Arkenstone bigger in the movie. From the book, I got the impression that it was at least twice the size it is shown as -- a pretty big jewel.
I was actually surprised when I first saw this scene. I'm like he must have it. Until anyone else saw this scene who else didn't know he had the stone all along?
Jakob Lindner I'm 20 and this is also my favorite out of the 6! FAVORITE! Do you even know what that means? It means: the one we enjoyed the most! Doesn't necessarily needs to be the best movie, but the most entertaining! So just because your favorite is one of the LOTR movies, doesn't mean having BOTFA as number 1 is a stupid opinion. Grow up kid!
Jakob Lindner I am 18 and the hobbit (book) was my favourite book while growing up, and the hobbit (movies) are a great adaption of the books. I found it really good with the entertaining scenes, great CGI, references to the lord of the rings and the humour/references straight out of the book. This isn't my favourite one (which is the desolation of smaug) but is really close to be my favourite (which can happen once I see the extended edition)
***** well, they did have very little source material, and has been constantly called "an adaptation of the book" which just means it is using the book for reference but there will be changes. In fact they didn't remove much of what happened in the book at all, they just moved some stuff around the time zones to fit the new story better (such as Bilbo taking the arkenstone when he did or when gandalf went to Dol Gol'dor) and add certain characters to make the first and second movies a bit more interesting and ultimately making the third movie have more sense (as much as I wanted goblins as the 5th army, it makes more sense that it is Saruons armies). Sure they removed Bard being the master of LakeTown but you don't get to know the character of bard in the book, the first you hear of him is AFTER the dragon attack. The book is still there but Peter Jackson just expanded those ideas that Tolkien left out
Dom Swinchin So true. Unfortunately, some die-hard fans of book are too blind with their obsession of staying exactly like the book including its flaw and shortcoming. Once again, book and movies are two different media meaning what worked for one does not always translate very well with other. The movie Hobbit trilogy includes additional part from the LOTR Appendices book missing in the Hobbit book. When it comes to produce a book adaptation, studio plays bigger influence of scene selections.
Did they really need to make that flashback that long? Just play Smaug's voice for a short bit and then one shot of Bilbo picking up the arckenstone. I swear this tries to drag out everything. Maybe it's just bad film making.
