Azog (Manu Bennett) kills Fili (Dean O'Gorman), leading Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and the other dwarves into a frenzied battle.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Peter Jackson takes cues from the appendices of The Lord of the Rings to expand New Line Cinema's Hobbit adaptation with this third film completing the epic tale of Bilbo Baggins, as played by Martin Freeman. The story opens to find the vengeful dragon Smaug (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch) decimating the peaceful hamlet of Laketown as Bilbo, Thorin (Richard Armitage) and the rest of the dwarves lay claim to the Lonely Mountain. But their celebration is short-lived as Thorin grows obsessed with finding the Arkenstone. Meanwhile, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) Elrond (Hugo Weaving) and Saruman (Christopher Lee) battle the Nazgul in an attempt to free Gandalf (Ian McKellen), and get some unexpected help from eccentric wizard Radagast (Sylvester McCoy). Unfortunately for all involved the struggle has only just begun, because as armies of dwarves, elves, orcs, humans and goblins converge at the base of the Lonely Mountain, the fight for the future of Middle Earth begins.

@Richard Compton So you prefer the insanely rushed cgi heavy film purely designed to milk money out of a classic novel over the faithful adaptation that took a huge portion of Peter Jacksons life and tell a story in a way that changed film making and story telling foreve. umm. okay like I personally liked the hobbit. but if you compare the dedication and t]love alone that Peter Jackson had for both projects. its hard to favor the hobbit. but then you look at the other factors. how somehow a troll in a 2003 film looks way better than a troll in a movie that came out ten years letter. not to mention how forced the story feels. its honestly hard to put trash on Peter Jackson considering he didn't even get involved in the hobbit till pretty much last minute. but even he admitted the he was basically just improving the lines and scenes right before they happened. so you take that. and compare the years that he devoted to his life trying to turn a book that is honestly down right almost impossible to adapt, and then turn it to an all out classic film. so I think its fine to like the hobbit. but to actually think that it comes close to a cinematic masterpiece. kinda hurts the fanboy brain.

I think a big reason why the hobbit got so much hate is because they were hoping for something as good as LOTR, but it's just not as good. The hobbit is still an amazing trilogy, but lotr is still better

@@tylerditrich8 Bilbo was closest to Thorin, he was very close to Balin as well in a way, but it did affect Bilbo a bit having just watched Fili needlessly die to the orc dictator, I don't think Bilbo just fainting instantly or him just looking so dumbfounded from having watched Fili's death would've worked for the scene though, Bilbo simply just stood there not knowing what to say, he never got the chance to experience Kili's death, Thorin's death really hit him the hardest, but in the end he still gave his final goodbye to the remaining dwarves, rode his horse all the way back to the shire with Gandalf.

That's because Thorin, Fili and Kili are the last direct descendants of the current line of kings (Fili and Kili are the sons of Thorin's deceased sister). All dwarves are related but Dwalin isn't part of the royal bloodline

LoTR and Hobbit movies hit different when you're in the right mindset. I think the feeling I have towards this series comes really close to true love. Also, Bilbo's acting is so appropriate. He's one of the few actors these days that make you forget that you're just watching a movie.

@@OSMANOSMAN-fc4xd Azog doesn't appear in the book, Azog was slain by Dain Ironfoot in the Battle of Azanulbizar outside Moria. In the passage you refer to (out of the frying pan into the fire) the Wargs speak first, and only Gandalf understands them, but later when the goblins/orcs arrive they speak and sing in a language even Bilbo understands, so it may be common.

To me all the actors look hyper realistic, so much so that they just look like actors in makeup and prosthetics (which they are, of course!)... And everything else look computer generated. These two things never quite gel for me. Unlike the Lord of the Rings where I'm thinking I'm looking at a Dwarf and Elf fighting in the mines of Moria, rather than an actor dressed as a Dwarf and an actor dressed as an Elf pretending to fight inside some CGI.

I'm not going to lie, I always thought it was stupid that Thorin decided to bring Kili and Fili with him on a potential deadly mission. Thorin, being the rightful ruler of Erebor, had to do this to reclaim it. However, it makes no sense to bring both or even one of the potential heirs to the throne. Did they not think about what could happen if something goes wrong? If Thorin died on this mission (which I know he later does, but thats beside the point), then it would become the duty of the eldest brother Fili to finish it. Even if Fili's presence was necessary, there was no need to bring Kili too. In the past, it was kind of a rule of thumb that when war is going on, at least one heir to the throne had to stay behind in case both king and crown prince died on the battlefield. And that idea stuck all the way to the 20th century; I heard that men and boys were exempt from the draft if they were the only son of a family. If Kili stayed at home, it would of done two things. It would ensure Erebor would have a ruler in case something happened. And, in the case of the movies, it would of avoided that unnecessary love drama.

I think the biggest thing I felt during this scene was confusion... because I didn't know who was getting killed and their relation to Thorin because there's like 30 dwarves in this trilogy as part of the "main" cast, and anyone who isn't Thorin, the fat one, and the old one kinda just blend together.

I hate to see Kili and Fili's Mother Dis must of felt after hearing of the death of her older Brother Thorin and her two only sons after the Battle of Five Armies. But I like to imagine that Dwalin, Balin and the rest of the Dwarves took care of her when she mourned for those years to come, with the royal care from her cousin Dain Ironfoot. If you think about it, she lost so many family members as it says in the Durins line history. Grandfather Thror killed by Azog, her Father Thrain died in DolGoldur, her and and Thorins brother Frerin died in the battle of Moria along with her unnamed husband (the father if Fili & Kili), and now her Older Brother and only two sons, that sucks. She literally lost most of her family. I can imagine that Tauriel returned Kili's ruin stone to Dis. I also like to imagine Dis becoming a warrior seeking her revenge on the Orcs of Moria in the events between the Hobbit and the LOTR. It would be nice to tell that story.

I think he's supposed to be in shock, but I'm not a fan of the performance here. It's not really convincing, so yes, it just seems like he's unconcerned/confused. I think they were riffing off the book in which Bilbo basically says, "you guys are all insane" and nopes out of the battle. The Battle of the 5 Armies was shown in the book as tragically stupid rather than epic or glorious, and Bilbo was the wise one for not wanting to get involved. The way they deal with it in the movie seems to miss the point. The actor that plays Bilbo in the Hobbit movies (Martin Freeman) doesn't do a great job. His expressions overplay the English tendancy toward bemused understatement to the point that he doesn't come off very real. I think that's part of his general acting style, so maybe the fault is more on the casting than the actor. The literary character was more well-rounded. He had that English matter-of-factness and simplicity which characterized Tolkien's Hobbits, but was also clever, strong-willed, brave etc., which this actor never really pulls off. He always just seems like he's an observer along for the ride.

@Tippotipo , I would think that it was meant to be an accurate portrayal of shock, except Freeman's general acting style throughout the movies is the same. So, if it is accurate, it looks like an accident. A broken clock is right twice a day.

Azog was only mentioned once in the book. Thorin dies by a stray arrow and fili and kili die while defending thorin against the troll guard of bolg. It was beorn that kills bolg. There were no orcs at that battle. The 5 armies were goblins, wargs, men, elves and dwarves. It was a shame how they could get so many things wrong from such a small book.

2. Are u referring to 1:40 ? If so i believe thorin uses a really good elvish sword that he found in the first part with sting and gandalf sword. And his sword got push back to the ground he did not do a full block to his face. But yeah azog is quite massive would be hard to block a full strike from his mace..

@@auberginemanproductions1608 Yeah I guess you're right it's just that the editing makes it feel like Azog is nearer to Bilbo here than the goblin captured by Gollum was while being beaten to death(where we actually saw the light die along with the goblin). Thorin reaches Azog so fast it seems way too nearby. They might be far enough to not get sensed by the sword but still be recognized by Thorin, Bilbo and Dwalin, which would mean that the sword is a littlebit lame, but even that is not expressed correctly. Poor editing. Just my opinion.

Max Lasser balrog was a being of the same power level so he was ‘allowed’ to circumvent the rules and actually use some of the power that he normally wouldn’t be allowed to wield. Same as when he faces Sauron in Dol Guldur

@@paolopesare3566 , Yes, but do they weigh 500lbs. It doesn't matter how strong your muscles are. Newton's laws still function. No matter how strong a golf ball is, it's still getting launched into the air when the club slams into it. This is especially the case as, a few seconds after deflecting the strong blow of a cartoonishly-large mace with a tiny sword, a similar blow lifts Thorin off his feet and sends him flying. So not only are the physics immersion-ruiningly bad, they're also inconsistent.

People constantly laugh and joker "Oh no. Not....THAT dwarf" like I get it there are 13 dwarves and they're not all bottomless buckets of deep character development but to act as though they were completely 1 note or cardboard cutouts, is an exaggeration. You couldn't remember the names of at the very least Kili, Fili, and Thorin it's entirely possible you just shouldn't have tried to watch the movies. Hell I was 11 when the Hobbit trilogy started and I remembered all the individual dwarves' names from the very beginning.

Thorin never had the chance to fight azog after azanulbizar war. He didn't even faced bolg during bo5a as he died in very early stage of the war when he charged toward orcs. If you do that in a today's movies people will expect captain marvel to show up from nowhere!!

My man....I can already tell u know nothing about lotr lol...Orc armies are never elite...except sarumans Uruk hai....they are well equipped....and all the time outnumber the enemy...that is their fighting style....swarm...elves and dwarves are elite...higher in strength than humans...dwarves are natural fighters...1 dwarf can easily kill 5 orcs in his own

How can a dwarf sword hit even counter a big heavy weapon like that? Completely unrealistic fight. The Orch has so much weight and power that the dwarfs sword do nothing against its swing.
