Addie, the reason those gems mean so much to Thranduil is because they were meant to be a gift for his wife and he asked the dwarves to create a necklace out of them, but she died before it was complete and Thror refused to give them back to Thranduil due to his dragon sickness.

there is cut scene where gandalf asks thranduil if he wanna lose his living son over some gems meant for his dead wife... 20-30 seconds scene would explain why he wanted them so much Thranduil wasnt bad person, he just lost his father and 2/3 of army in battle of the last alliance, then his wife died in gundabad. He just cared for his people and didnt want them to die in another wars. For his grief he kinda got stuck in past and forgot his son is still alive and cared more for some jewels. In movie they potrayed him like villain. I would say it is same as denethor, he wasnt bad just circumstances made him do bad/stupid things.

Isn't that the necklace with the Silmaril that Thingol had the Dwarves make? Or did JRRT double up on the story?

@@samswords9993 No, the Silmarils were not the necklace. They were different, made by Feanor, the Elf who asked Galadriel for a hair from her head 3 times (She could tell his request was not pure, driven by greed so she denied him. Thus the significance of her giving Gimli 3 hairs). A callback I only just noticed rewatching the other day (for the 1st time since the theater release). When King Thranduil is suggesting to Bard that he should just sell the Arkenstone, he says Ecthelion of Gondor would buy it. Ecthelion was the contemporary Steward at the time … father of Denethor and grandfather of Boromir and Faramir.

Thing about the three Elven Rings: they're kind of the opposite of the One Ring - the Elven Rings are basically invisible unless the bearer wishes to reveal them. In _The Fellowship of the Ring,_ Galadriel revealed to Frodo that she possesses Nenya, the Ring of Adamant (also called the Ring of Water), which you clearly see here, as well. Remember Gandalf's confrontation with the Balrog earlier in _Fellowship_ - "I am the Servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor!"

@evenmoor
@evenmoor 2 года назад
@@sanchayansarkar2953 Gandalf is associated with fire in many different ways, I was just using this statement as an example. (The third Elven Ring is Vilya, the Ring of Air.) For what it's worth, the Ring of Fire, Narya, is also less about actual fire and more about inflaming people's hearts. (The Elven Rings were about healing and preservation in general, actually.) For instance, whenever he took his place among the Men of Gondor, they overcame their fear and were able to stand firm in the face of the Nazgûl during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in _The Return of the King._ Another big example is what he did with Théoden in _The Two Towers_ book version; it was less about releasing Théoden from some spell and more about encouraging him to cast off the self-doubts and fears that had been steadily whispered into his ear by Gríma. _'Not all is dark. Take courage, Lord of the Mark; for better hep you will not find. No counsel have I to give to those that despair. Yet counsel I could give, and words I could speak to you. Will you hear them? They are not for all ears. I bid you come out before your doors and look abroad. Too long have you sat in shadows and trusted to twisted tales and crooked promptings.'_ In any event, you can clearly see Narya on Gandalf's finger during the scene at the Grey Havens in _The Return of the King,_ when he bids the hobbits farewell. It's gold, with a red jewel. It isn't explicitly identified in the films, but it is in the book. _Frodo saw that Gandalf now wore openly on his hand the Third Ring, Narya the Great, and the stone upon it was red as fire. Then those who were to go were glad, for they knew that Gandalf also would take ship with them._

Galadriel is likely the most powerful Elf in Middle-Earth at this point. She is older than both the Sun and the Moon, and was one of the very few still living to have seen the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor before Melkor killed them. The Elves of the First Age were mighty in the ways of natural magic and spirit magic, especially those of the line of Finwe. She is also brother to Finrod Felagund, who founded the great hidden kingdom of Nargothrond, and grandmother of Arwen (whose mother Celebrian is Galadriel's daughter). The reason she's so tempted by the power of the Ring and such is because that is why she left Valinor; not to chase after the Silmarils with Feanor and the other Noldorin elves, but to build her own realm in the world and make things the way she wanted them to be. The lure of power is something she's always had to be wary of because of her ambition, and it's not been helped by her taking custody of one of the Three rings given to the Elves: Nenya, the ring of water, which was how she preserved and protected Lothlorien for so long.

@@emperorpicard4901 Well, truth be told, you can see Saruman extend his hand to force him back at the end. The reason saruman didn't take the forefront on the expulsion is that he used up a lot of his fighting with the Naz'gul. Also, Galadriel has the power of Nenya, and the light of Elendil to draw on. So, on her own, she wouldn't stand a chance, but they do introduce all 3 of these factors in the movie to offer an excuse about why she could stand against one of the more powerful Maia. She is an extremely powerful elf in her own right, but not THAT powerful.
@OrdinaryInspiration
@OrdinaryInspiration 2 года назад
@@emperorpicard4901 To be fair she could rival him only in his weakened state. Losing the one ring significantly reduced his power, because he poured so much of his natural power into it's creation. At full power Sauron would swat her like a mosquito.
@tehdipstick
@tehdipstick 2 года назад
@@OrdinaryInspiration The scene still speaks to Jackson's self-admitted bias towards the Elves. The source material has Galadriel and the White Council go to Dol Guldur, where she casts down its walls, but this was after Sauron's spirit had left it for Barad-dûr and there's not mention of there ever being a confrontation between the two of them. In the texts Sauron doesn't leave Dol Guldur because he's cast out, but simply because he's grown powerful enough that he feels he can safely return to Barad-dûr and no longer needs to hide away under the guise of the Necromancer. Jackson intentionally chose to portray Galadriel as being powerful enough to banish Sauron, which would imply to those unfamiliar with the source material that she is stronger than him, but there is no substantial evidence for this in the books. Had the confrontation happened a few decades or centuries earlier while Sauron's spirit was still relatively weak then it would've made sense, but at this point he's only about 60 years away from being strong enough to reform his physical form, meaning he's been building his strength for around 2940 years. While he'd probably not have been strong enough to destroy her at this point he should at least have been able to resist her to the point of a standstill.

Just wanted to draw your attention to two more Britcom legends: the Mayor of Laketown (Stephen Fry) and Dain of the Iron Hills (Billy Connolly), with two very different styles. Connolly was an internationally famous Glaswegian stand-up who also enjoyed some success as a character actor on American TV. Fry's forte was more in sketch satire, especially with his longtime partner Hugh Laurie, of Dr House fame. Fry and Connolly are regarded as British national treasures, and rightly so.

Least to most essential extended cuts for these Middle-Earth movies, IMO: 6. "The Fellowship of the Ring" (doesn't genuinely add anything that further informs plot and/or character points in subsequent movies) 5. "An Unexpected Journey" (only ahead of "Fellowship" because it adds the subplot regarding the current status of the Dwarven and Elven rings, and also first alludes to Kíli's interest in female Elves) 4. "The Desolation of Smaug" 3. "The Battle of the Five Armies" 2. "The Two Towers" 1. "The Return of the King"

The Dwarves are a race of smiths and warriors. It's no surprise that they spent centuries refining how to wage war, especially against the Elves and Orcs. Most Elves had essentially hit their height of power long before the movies, with the First Age being their zenith. The Dwarves, Orcs and Men had spent the Second and Third Ages rising in power, which is why the Elves themselves, having been exhausted by the wars against Morgoth and Sauron, chose to leave Middle-Earth for the Undying Lands.

It's cool that you've decided to read The Trilogy and The Hobbit. When you read The Hobbit, keep in mind that the Jackson films are a combination of what you'll read in The Hobbit, and The Appendices that Tolkien included at the end of The Return of the King. Personally, I'm happy he included this material as it better sets the stage for the reemergence of Sauron in Lord of the Rings. Also I wanted to ask you something: can you please make reaction videos to the series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? It’s one of the best Marvel series ever made, and I’m sure you’ll like it! Again, I really love your videos, keep up the good work 👍🏻

When you read The Lord of the Rings don't skip over the Appendices (the "bonus part" at the end): you can find there a LOT of additional information about this world, timelines, languages, events (even events AFTER the story) and the background story of many characters (as the dwarfs you see in The Hobbit, not directly included in the book itself). It's hard to believe that this amount and dept of details is the work of a single man! I recommend at least Appendix A-1, Part 5 "The story of Aragorn and Arwen"; a chapter full of beauty, joy and sadness at the same time like many things in Middle-Earth: Tolkien desired this to be part of the main tale but he was aware this should have slowed down an already looooong book, so in the end he moved that chapter to the Appendices; that's why Arwen doesn't appear much in the book. But it's a fundamental part of the story (that's why scriptwriters rightly put her in the movies): after all Aragorn put all efforts to help Frodo and defeat Sauron not only to repair the error of his ancestor Isildur, but also to became worthy of Arwen, an immortal maiden of a superior race, the most beautiful jewel in the House of Elrond. First chapters may appear slow, especially if you're used to fast paced action modern books. But Tolkien is a traditional narrator and he wants us discover his world step by step as the Hobbits do in their travels. It's a long journey so have a little patience and you'll be rewarded. The Two Towers book has a different timeline compared to the movie: the first part is only about Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas, so for hundreds of pages you know nothing about Frodo and Sam! This is a simple but very effective way to put the reader in the same mood of growing stress and anxiety of the characters: the fellowship is broken and they don't know what's happening to the others! This probably doesn't work on you as you already know the story from the movies, but I hope you'll notice and appreciate this trick! Within the book there is a map which helps avoid confusion between places like Erebor (the dwarvish kingdom in The Hobbit) and Moria (the one in The Lord of the Rings, Khazad-dum in Dwarvish). Moria fell down long ago; after the events in The Hobbit some dwarfs from the Thorin's company leaded by Balin tried to reclaim it as they did with Erebor. After an initial success they at last were overwhelmed, that's why we see Balin's tomb in Moria in Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit book was intended by Tolkien for a children tale, so it's written in a more simple and funny way compared to The Lord of the Rings (which is a mature mythology); don't be surprised finding different writing styles in various Tolkien works. The Hobbit movies are not as good as Lord of the Rings movie (though they worth a view if you like Middle-Earth): they changed/messed up/invented (too) many little and big things with questionable results. Changes in Lord of the Rings had the purpose of fit more material, changes in The Hobbit... I don't know. Tolkien never wrote about dwarfs burping and farting or Radagast's face covered with bird's poo: trash things like these are not his style (Dwarfs are harsh people, but definitely gentlemen, and Radagast is a respectable Wizard). The book has many funny moments without ANY vulgarity. The very good part is that they included in the movies events and character that aren't directly described in the book, but we know from other sources (The Lord of the Rings and the above mentioned Appendices) their presence and deeds at that time in that places (as Radagast, Legolas or the attack at Dol Guldur), in order to offer a more complete view of the events preceding The Lord of the Rings trilogy; after all, we all know it's all part of the same single unique story, isn't it? Last thing, never forget the "hidden" message: pity and mercy are the only real way to defeat Evil (starting from Bilbo sparing Gollum's life, without which The ring would not have been destroyed 80 years after). Any act of violence, even made with good purpose, turns in the end to evil or bad things. So, try not to desire death for the villains! Please, please, please! Let us know you impressions with a reaction/commentary video(s) for the books!

Those earthworms are the Jar Jar Binks of the series. They look every bit like an arm in a glove poking out of a sandbox. With all of the great visuals, these are just ridiculous... and unnecessary since they are not part of Tolkien's work (it was the orcs and goblins that tunneled the mountains, not arm-glove worms). When you get to the end, stay for the closing song. The Last Goodbye really wraps up the whole movie series (LOTR and Hobbit combined). Written and performed by Billy Boyd, who played Pippin in LOTR; he said he ugly cried when he heard it at the screening of this movie.

Any idea why and when thorin was forging a gigantic golden bell just to break his own wall down and then charging out, avoiding getting hit by rocks and the bell. Not to mention they all thought it would be a great idea to get out of their shiny mithril chainmails and plate armor they found inside the mountain and now they fight inside their light film leather armor? Thats one aspect of why fans like me are very critical about the hobbit. It doesnt make much sense. Too much over the top. They all must have died countless times, at least once because the fat orc fell on them.

The istari, ( wizards) are myar spirits from the elvish undying lands. ( you need to read the silmirillion).. Galadriel knew the myar spirit that became Gandalf when she lived in the undying land. Hisform in middle earth was transformed to old man but I think she see his immortal form, which is incredibly beautiful male . But you need to read the silmirilion to I understand so.e things in the hobbit and lotr. It's is like when gimli ask for a hair, she gives him three. Feanor, the greatest noldor( elf) lord asked galaxies for three hairs from her head...she refused.

This may be the weakest of The Hobbit Trilogy but it's still underrated, I think it was the right decision opening the movie with Smaug's demise I mean how boring would it have been to open it with the Dwarves searching for the Arkenstone. Galadriel vs Sauron is so epic!

Good new Addie. LOTR is actually better the second time as you see so many scenes with an understanding of the context and significance. So much you would have missed by only watching it once. Hard to find time when you are doing this reactor thing but you will see one day when you revisit them.

I watched this movie a number of times, and every so often I happen to catch something I missed previously. For instance, I was watching it today & happened to catch the smile on Bard's face when Bilbo apologized for stealing the keys under the noses of Thranduil's guards. Apparently he was greatly impressed with Bilbo doing something like that & getting away with it. I don't remember ever seeing that look on Bard's face before, but you can tell he probably loved the fact that someone so unassuming had put one over on the Wood Elf King.

9:10 yeah Galadriel is a Noldor elf (high elf if you like). They are like normal elves cept x 50. Running up a Oliphant would be a morning stroll to her.
@_semih_
@_semih_ 2 года назад
1) No character ran up an Oliphant in the books. Its just a non-canon "idea" created for the films. 2)In the books, Galadriel is not strong as she is in this movie adaptation. Any random orc would slaughter her with ease if she was ever in the battle field. She was never a fighter but a wise elven princess. Also Galadriel never appeared in places near to orcs or other forces of evil cause of the risk of getting killed
@k.v.7681
@k.v.7681 2 года назад
It's not only that she's a Noldor. One of the main sources of her power and wisdom comes from basking in the light of the two trees that would become the sun and moon, as well as being tutored by two Valar (gods/archangels, basically Gandalf's bosses) in her youth. But I would say that her power should be more subtle (still powerful beyond reckoning, but not in such a flashy way. Same with Saruman). I'd wager an Oliphant would still stomp her, because the physical is not her domain. But she can bitchslap a weakened Sauron in spirit no problem.

@@_semih_ Yeah it didnt happen any way like it was in the movies...but ....(The Lord of the Rings, Appendix B, The Tale of Years: The Chief Days from the Fall of the Barad-dûr to the End of the Third Age) "Celeborn came forth and led the host of Lórien over Anduin in many boats. They took Dol Guldur, and Galadriel threw down its walls and laid bare its pits, and the forest was cleansed."
@_semih_
@_semih_ 2 года назад
@@willot4237 the point is Galadriel did not appeared until the orcs were killed by the other (male) elven forces of her husband. Any of random orc would kill her. Yeah in that passage, Tolkien referring to the Luthien's story when she was throwing down the walls and gates of Tol-Sirion. But this only happened when Sauron gave Luthien the "opening words" to unmake his own spell above the island and the tower: "Nigh the foul spirit Morgoth made and bred of evil shuddering strayed from its dark house, when Lúthien rose and shivering looked upon his throes. 'O demon dark, O phantom vile of foulness wrought, of lies and guile, here shalt thou die, thy spirit roam quaking back to thy master's home his scorn and fury to endure; thee he will in the bowels immure of groaning earth, and in a hole everlastingly thy naked soul shall wail and gibber-this shall be, *unless the keys thou render me of thy black fortress, and the spell that bindeth stone to stone thou tell, and speak the words of opening.'* With gasping breath and shuddering he spake, and yielded as he must, and vanquished betrayed his master's trust." (J.R.R Tolkien, The Lay of Leithian, p127) In Galadriel's case, Firstly Tolkien did not even mentioned anything about something like that. Also it happened only after the fall of Sauron so Sauron's spell and power were already vanished from Dol-Guldur. Remember Galadriel nor any other member of the White council couldn't "destroy" Dol-Guldur when they forced Sauron to leave the place. Because his powerful spell that bindeth stone to stone was still above Dol-Guldur!
