If I'm not mistaken In Tolkien's world Dragons are capable of using magic as they're corruptions of Morgoths being able to use spells, erase memories and control people with their gaze. if they lay upon a horde of treasure for long enough can curse it with Dragon sickness but it also Doesn't help That Thorin is particularly susceptible to the sickness.

@@Skeletongentleman7808 I'd love to see that so much. Honestly I'd love to see an adaptation of the Silmarillion and the Unfinished/ Untold Tales too if we're talking the children of Hurin. Getting to see the creation of Middle Earth and how Morgoth gave rise to all the evil creatures and beings we know and love. I'd give good money to see something like that even in live action or even a Primal/ last wish or spiderverse style series or movies I think could be amazing imo 😅

Gandalf has a feeling Sauron was returning. Imagine the Witch King, leader of the Nazgul, riding Smaug against Gandalf and Aragorn. Eowyn wouldn't have been able to save the day.

I love the echo of Smaug's line "I will not part with a single coin. Not one piece of it." By Thorin. It's been buried by modern interpretations of dragons but the first dragon of fantasy comes from germanic myth where a dwarf is so overcomed by his greed for gold that he transforms into a dragon.

First Idea of an Dragon comes from Orient (4.000 BC). First Picture of a Dragon comes from a seal from Sumerians (3.000 BC) At that time no Germanic tribes existed.

Though wizards (Maiar) are more powerful, like angels, than Elves, two things make Galadriel slightly more powerful. One is wizards have been limited in their use of their powers by the Valar before coming to Middle Earth. Second, the ring Galadriel has greatly increases her power. The ring she has is so powerful that Tolkien in LOTR implies that she was able to take Lothlorien out of the space and time of Middle Earth and place it to a much earlier time nearer to creation before the world had begun to fade for the Elves. I love Cate Blanchett in this. She looks like fullly mature, grown-ass Elf Queen, utterly beautiful and powerful.

I love Tolkien talks like this, because I slightly disagree. To say it placed Lothlorien out of space and time and into an earlier Age is precisely the best way to conceptualize it, but it isn’t literally what she did. Nenya was certainly a powerful Ring outright, and brought great enhancements of concealment and preservation, but I’ve always been under the impression that it was utilized and supplemented by Galadriel to unlock its full potential. And your comment seems to unintentionally dismiss Galadriel’s natural ability and her learned knowledge. She learned magic from Melian, and Nenya was a catalyst or buff to her talents. While it’s never directly said that Lothlorien is in the timeline of First Age, it does have many qualities of preservation and beauty, grown and concealed by Galadriel using Nenya. Side note: I do enjoy the take on Galadriel calling Sauron nothing but a servant, and had the guts to try and literally banish him into The Void. It was a little much, but the Vial and Ring being parts of and her powers were cool to see on screen.

She held back entropic forces, kept the ravages of time out of Lothlorien. Which is something only a former student of Melian and Luthien could do. Galadriel was remarkably powerful and in the appendices of LoTR she basically destroys Dul Guldur and it's hill. She's a fun character

@@iwd8921 Right, exactly this. I like how the Appendices basically gives us “she threw down its walls and buried it” or something. Her entrance to basically disintegrating the orc and casting a veil of Light over the fortress is essentially my image of her ongoing preservation of Lothlorien. It seems a very minor concept to the concealed and preserved nature of Valinor from the rest of the world-not so much taken out of time but rather a place where the decaying effects of time can’t take hold.

Ah yes, Galadriel. Arguably the most powerful among the Children of Iluvatar (Elves and Men) still present in Middle Earth during this period. But it wasn't just Nenya that made her _that_ powerful: She was a true Valinor native, born and raised. Imagine what sort of person you'd be if you grew up in what passed for actual Heaven in that world. She grew up under the light of the Two Trees: the untainted Light that was -- quite literally -- blessed. The Light's still in her, apparently. She was an actual student of _both_ Aulë (the creator of the Dwarves and the "god" of smithing, minerals, and rocks) and Yavanna (the creator of the Two Trees and the "goddess" of all growing things). She *knows* stuff. Fëanor was her uncle. Enough said. She was Melian's protegé when she stayed in Doriath. The same Melian who -- not only was a Maiar like Gandalf, Saruman, and Sauron -- was also the "blessed component" of the bloodline of Ëarendil, Elrond, Arwen, all of the Numenorean Kings, and Aragorn. She brought back the lost art of making Lembas. Good stuff. Frodo and Sam would've died on the road without it.

6:29 During the last battle against Sauron's forces in LotR there was a huge battle here too, involving humans, the Easterlings, dwarves... . I think it was won when the one ring was destroyed and the orcs started to flee. I'd love to see that battle come to life on screen as well, if done right.

There was a siege taking place. Dain Ironfoot (here seen in the film) and King Brand (Bard's descendent) were slain during the siege. While attending to outlast the Easterlings who were invading from the Rhun, the dwarves and men were outmatched. However, when the ring was destroyed, the Easterlings fell. This victory occurred at exactly the same time as the Storming of the Black Gate

Thraduil came for white gems. Those gems belongs to his wife back then. Theres a deleted scene about this. And gandalf comes and says these words to Thranduil those gems were not all your wife left you, she left u son. Tell me, which would she rather you value more?

The Elvenking had no interest in the Arkenstone. What Thranduil wanted back were the white gems that had been given to the dwarves for the fashioning of a necklace for (or in memory of?) his wife. However, this is specific to the films. In the book, it was assumed that Smaug had probably killed Thorin and his companions and the treasure was therefore unguarded. This is what Tolkien has to say about dragon-sickness: "...[Bard] did not reckon with the power that gold has upon which a dragon has long brooded, nor with dwarvish hearts. Long hours in the past days Thorin had spent in the treasury; and the lust of it was heavy on him. Though he had hunted chiefly for the Arkenstone, yet he had an eye for many another wonderful thing that was lying there, about which were wound old memories of the labours and the sorrows of his race." And, of the Master of Lake-town: "The old Master had come to a bad end. Bard had given him much gold for the help of the Lake-people, but being the kind that easily catches such disease he fell under the dragon-sickness, and took most of the gold and fled with it, and died of starvation in the Waste, deserted by his companions."

12:44 Morgoth aka Melkor was Sauron's master and the 1st dark lord of Arda (the world the live in). He created the Orcs, Dragons and turned some Maia (also known as the Balrogs of Morgoth) to his side and was more powerful than Sauron.

Morgoth didn't make the balrogs, balrogs are type of maiar which are like angels, gandalf is a maiar. But balrogs are fallen maiar and got corrupted by morgoth. Sauron is also a maiar

There is a section in the book called "The Battle of the Fire Armies". This is probably the part of the "story" that Peter Jackson embellished the most. Some of the embellishment is good/fun (Dain Ironfoot!), some....ehhhhh (were-worms). Thanks for keeping the review of this coming

Thats a chapter of the book and its kind of hard to say Jackson embellished it because theres almost no detail in the battle. The book just says ‘Thorin and his sister-sons fell’, or something like that. I thought the worms were a bit much and so is some of the rest but its more like filling in the complete lack of details than embellishing the story.

You forgot the men and the eagles. The orcs/goblins/wargs are generally regarded as one army. However, in Tolkien's notes, the first time he uses the phrase he was actually referring to five "good" armies: elves, dwarves, men, eagles, and also an army of bears led by Beorn. But then the bear army didn't make the final draft, so it became four "good" armies against a massive army of orcs (w/goblins and wargs).

Saruman is as genuine as he can be about dealing with Sauron. He had Orthanc for a long time, but it really wasn’t until this timeframe that he actually began looking into the Palantir (orb thing). He was never truly evil, but his arrogance blinded him. Sauron was the master manipulator, and through the Palantir managed to slowly convince Saruman and Denethor that there was no hope.

This is not correct. During this period in the books Saruman was already searching for the ring and tricked Radagast into helping him. Sauron did not manipulate Saruman at any point and the same goes for Denethor.

@@morothane Because Saruman already has ambitions of his own. Before Sauron reoccured as the Necromancer and people thought he had vanished into the void, Saruman was looking for the ring at its last known location which was at the Anduin river (where Isildur died). There is no textural evidence for any manipulation of any one by Sauron through the palentiri. That is a Peter Jackson idea.

@@mikkelborchsenius1156 Saruman indeed had his own ambitions of finding the Ring, but his ambitions most certainly became twisted by Sauron. There is quite a bit of textual evidence to support that Sauron most certainly manipulated Saruman. Henneth-Annun has a great compiled article about this topic. Here are just a few of the excerpts: *The Return of the King, LoTR Appendix B, The Tale of Years: The Third Age:* “... Saruman dares to use the palantír of Orthanc, but becomes ensnared by Sauron, who has the Ithil Stone. He becomes a traitor to the Council.” *Unfinished Tales, Part 4, Ch 3, The Palantíri:* Saruman fell under the domination of Sauron and desired his victory, or no longer opposed it. … The Council in general must independently have known of the Stones and their ancient dispositions, but they did not regard them as of much present importance.... It must be remembered that the Stones were originally "innocent," serving no evil purpose. It was Sauron who made them sinister, and instruments of domination and deceit. … It is evident that at the time of the War of the Ring the Council had not long become aware of the doubt concerning the fate of the Ithil-stone, and failed... to consider what might be the result if Sauron became possessed of one of the Stones, and anyone else should then make use of another.’

Thorin was bitten by the gold bug or I should say has gold sickness. And it’s a real thing gold makes men do crazy things and drives them mad, there’s another movie going back in the 40s called the treasure of Sierra Madre starring Humphrey Bogart which deals with this. It’s about three gold prospectors find a large cash gold in the mountains and then slowly Succumb to it and begin to fight over it you should look for that move

The Five Armies were the Dwarves, Men and Elves on the side of Good, opposed by the Orcs and Wargs on the side of Evil. The Dragon-Sickness was a generic term, going back to the First Age of Middle-Earth, when the wingless dragon Glaurung, the very first of the dragons, was unleashed by the first Dark Lord, Morgoth, against the Elves of Nargothrond - - Glaurung conquered Nargothrond easily, and took their treasure as his hoard. Dragon-Sickness is simply a term for so greedy a love of gold as to be indistinguishable from an illness - - modern psychologists would refer to it as a mental illness. The Seven Rings of Power that Sauron later gave to the Dwarf-Lords had little effect on them, other than to stimulate this overweening greed for gold. Thorin's father Thrain had one of these rings, and it was taken from him by Sauron (as the Necromancer) in Dol Guldur. Thorin's fatal flaw was a lack of empathy for the suffering of the Men of Lake-Town, along with his bitterness over having been imprisoned by the Elvenking Thranduil without just cause - - Thorin and Co. had been simply journeying along the Elven-Road through Mirkwood, which was hardly offense enough to justify imprisoning them.

In the book, Thranduil inprisoned Thorin because he wouldn't explain why he was wandering in Mirkwood and supposedly attacking his people. The rest of the dwarves were captured later and imprisoned for insulting the elves. Thranduil was more reasonable in the book

In fact, the wargs and goblins have a meeting to discuss whether or not they will work together since they are two separate entities. If the eagles counted as an army, then so would the bats accompanying the goblins, the ravens of erebor, and so forth

Idk why they changed it, but the way Bard finds out about Smaug’s weak spot is a Thresh bird overhears Bilbo talk about the weakness. The bird flies all the way back to Lake Town to let Bard know, who is a decedent of special men who can talk to birds I guess? Just in time to shoot it the dragon. This way cooler and mythological imo than a known fact that his son seems to already know.

regarding whatever you think about the Hobbit trilogy. The making of the Hobbit was a mess, pre-production, how they decided to make it, and what the movies ended up as. IMO its fine they are to watch. Brought some nice humor and cool scenes, and pictured and extended the LOTR universe that I want so experience. Thou there are other stories from the LOTR universe that cud have been told without watering out the Hobbit book. Anyway, it had alot! to live up to and it didnt touch the original trilogu but a decent try. It was entertaining in the end.

The Hobbit movie is more of a childrens movie than LOTR, much like the books. There are lots of crazy over the top fight scenes and action sequences, this isnt very Tolkien and has divided fans of the LOTR movies.

Edit: I was actually mistaken in this post. Please see my comment below for correction. Dragon sickness is an invention of the movies. Thorin is obsessed with the Arkenstone in the books because it is essentially the unifying symbol of the Dwarven people - like the crown of a monarchy. The elves and dwarves have a long and chequered past. The elves genocided the petty-dwarves, stealing their homes (Nargothrond), warred with the dwarves over the Nauglamir, and much more. Dwarves also had problems with humans over a dragon-hoard before. When humans killed a dragon and the dwarves asked for their artifacts back, the humans refused (which is why Gimli and the Rohirrim beef when they first meet, because the humans that denied the dwarves their property were the ancestors of the Rohirrim). In short, the dwarves don't trust humans and especially elves because of history. Notice: Thorin trusts Bilbo partly because there is no history of betrayal between the dwarves and hobbits - Thorin thinks that one of his own kin has betrayed him before Bilbo. And yet, it is the Hobbit that betrayed him, confirming the Dwarven suspicion of the other races. Thorin is not as demented in the book as in the film, but he doesn't take kindly to the arrival of two armies on his doorstep making demands, especially whilst the symbol of his legitimacy as King-under-the-mountain (the Arkenstone) is missing.

Dragon sickness was in the book, but only briefly. It is used as another word for intense greed. It's not a sickness as much as it's a weakness.
