Finally! Someone who also points out the issue with face tracking putting you in the center of the frame. All brands seem to do this. Why don't they allow positioning on the 1/3rd grid line? Question- does the AI tracking headroom adjustment/calibration allow the same calibration for vertical (portrait) mode?
I just picked this up as my first gimbal. Love the size and smoothness, but was kinda bummed about the shallow tilt angle. I'm wondering if it's really so important for my use tho. I plan to mostly get nature shots and review small products like flash lights. The tracking is very neat, but I'm not sure if I'll be on camera much myself. 🤔 Love the videos and advice. Hope to make better smartphone content soon, thanks!
Glad you find my videos helpful. More cool content coming up in 2022!! I love the AI sensor although might not be useful for some people... But trust me, once you know it is a relaible tool, you might find ways to implement it in your workflow or production.. Is like having a cameraman with you at all times (well, not quite, but you get the idea)
Thanks! I try to give honest, unbiased and practical reviews. Then the viewer can make an informed decision. What I think is bad, someone else might think it is not relevant to them, or viceversa, but it’s always best to know before committing. My alarms always go off when I watch a review and they don’t mention a single shortcoming. Anyhow. Thanks for the comment and hopefully you subscribe so you watch my reviews as they are published and/or even suggest some that you might like to watch.
Great review, you sold me on the Hohem iSteady V2 AI Tracking Gimbal. Hands down the best value for the beginner. Would love to see a follow-up review using a iPhone 12 Pro, a Saramonic Professional Mini Plug Play Microphone for iPhone iOS, PLUS the Hohem 3-in-1 Extension Tripod Accessory with remote control for the iSteady V2. Items I like to see explored would be comparing iPhone 12 Pro mic with the external mic, handling with the added weight of external mic, possible work-arounds for rising and lowering of video angle shots, AI tracking performance, etc. If this set-up has good performances in such areas, then this setup would a great way to start in vlogging, video film making, etc., with creative imagination of use and subject manner. Thanks again for all your great reviews and tutorials.
Man you really love your bicycles don't you 😀. That's good. 👍👍👍 Lovely gimbal btw. I was wondering what the difference would be worth object tracking and the ai tracking and then you explained it soon in the video itself. Next video: om4 active track vs hohem AI track
Glad you enjoyed the video! For content creation, in a big city, I find a bike the fastest way around. Plus I do enjoy cycling, I've to say. I might wait for the OM5, whenever it comes out, to do that..... I think it will be a much fairer comparison... In my opinion...
Wow that is cool innovation from Hohem.I wish it was already released when I bought my Hohem Isteady X.Hope to see more cycling content as well.New subs here sir
Just purchased it, mainly for the AI sensor. It's also really smooth, but have only used it for a couple hours. I also have the G6 Max, which allows for many more shots.
You have then the same combo that I have. G6 max for most of my gimbal use, the hohem for solo filming using the AI, and for the rare occasion I might be out and about and can’t be bothered with the larger G6 max. Trust me, the AI sensor is amazing, I use it a lot and it is so, so helpful and also reliable!! Not perfect but you learn to work with it (specially if there are a lot of faces or heads, as the AI struggles to stay on you if another head or face gets between you and the sensor) but if you know what the limitations are, it is super helpful. Let me know how you get on!!
@@johnm7882 to be honest with you, I have never been recording uninterrupted for that long. I usually have short clips so I can’t really give you an opinion… How long do your takes usually go for or ideally you’d like them to be?
You have a great channel, finally someone who uses gimballs and doesn't just show them from the studio. I was in doubt about the OM5 and your review made me converge (on your suggestion), on this model (today with a discount coupon only 99 euros on Amazon), which I took. I'm very interested in the AI and the ability to frame correctly. I subscribed to your channel, good luck and I hope it grows. There are few honest reviews now, they are all heavily sponsored now. A question, do you see complex to hook a rode wireless go? it seems to me that free space for cables there is, thanks.
If you have use for the AI sensor, u’ll love it. I use it all the time, put it on a tripod, mount the phone so the rear lens is facing me and use the AI sensor to do solo filming when I got nobody to help me. In regards to mounting a wireless mic, the only way to fit it in is using the 1/4” thread at the base of the gimbal, but the cable might throw off the balance as the gimbal pans or tilts. I would recommend when using a gimbal to record the audio separately, away from the gimbal itself, like on a small zoom H1N or similar that you can keep in your pocket. That way you don’t risk the things going out of whack. That’s how I do it and it works great and syncing audio in post nowadays is super easy.
Greatly appreciate your reviews, with emphasis on content, creativity and workflow. Wish you would devote a bit more time to cinematic quality & composition, and Android functionality. For example, I have a Poco X3 that has movie frame and pro modes...so I've enjoyed your Pocket 2 reviews and considered that purchase (for tracking) until seeing this AI tracking review... Like you, I use the rear cameras. Seems like you prefer this gimbal & your smartphone over the Pocket 2? Am also a new subscriber due to your emphasis on real-world practicality. Thanks!
Well, I love the pocket 2 and for anything that requires movement, walking, running, on the spot inspiration, it’s hard to beat. I am currently making a review of the new 13 pro max with its cinematic mode (i bet you will like it as I talk a lot about cinematography) and I have to say, for filming yourself, where you want to introduce movement over static shots, the iSteadyv2 is brilliant and combined with the 13 pro max makes it even better for talking heads as with the cinematic mode and f11-f12, it looks really nice. You’ll see in my review, out next week. Essentially, no one camera/setup is best for everything. But I love the pocket 2, I think it is hard to beat. There are a lot of new cool stuff out there (AI tracking, cinematic more, computational photography, I am curious as to what will DJI will do with the pocket 3 when that comes out, I guess in a year or two, to compete..but the AI sensor in this gimbal and what offers for solo filming, is truly sensational. I use it now in every video I make in one way or another. I was filming yesterday in Trafalgar Square in London for this iPhone 13 review and I had it on a tripod filming me, filming what I was doing. Great “crew member”! And it doesn’t complain when I move it here and there until I find the right angle!! 😂😂
Just a thought popped in my mind as i went through your comment. When you say cinematic quality and composition, do you mean my videos, or the products that I review? I always take everyone’s comments seriously as the more constructive feedback I get the better videos I can make…
@@SamuelSotiega "Cinematic quality"..... It seems like everyone these days has a few videos out there that they consider "cinematic" but which are MTV type of fast frame 1000 action shots from different angles pasted together in odd framing for 30 seconds with their favorite music that they think tells a "story..." Fifty years ago sitcoms showed the angst of neighbors coming over and watching dad's family reel videos. How technology has improved things, eh...? You allude to this in your criticism of the Pocket 2 and its tracking capability as a "piece of --" because it centers everything in the frame. Correctly so... And then you praise the V2 because it allows you to use the rule of thirds with headroom. Correctly so. I've seen many gimbal reviews that praise a product, but when you look closely the footage is filled with very subtle microjitters... Not cinematic... Do they know how to walk with a gimbal? You covered the feature of the V2 where you can set the speed of the gimbal to "slow" to get a more "cinematic" effect. Correctly so... There are times when you want the jitters, such as to create fear and suspense in the audience, as you know...but most people don't know this...and RU-vid is showered with this "stuff" -- as you pointed out indirectly in your review of the OM5 and its appeal to the "selfie crowd" (which I found quite amusing.) Not everyone can go out and pony up $1500+ for a new iPhone 13 Max and the additional items the camera will require, or has the newest Mac Pro or Ryzen CPU and several terabytes of storage to process the gigantic files it puts out... There are more people who want to know how to "make their videos rock" and want to know how the latest piece of equipment might do that...and compositional tips help them do that. For example, I wholeheartedly agree with you that using the V2 will be like giving me an extra "crew member" who "doesn't complain" (but I just bought the Smooth-Q3 Combo -- guess the unopened box is going back to Best Buy?)....but you still need those ND filters on the smartphone (advantage Pocket 2)...and those guide lines to frame a shot...and have a story to tell... I think that a balanced approach for demoing a product is to appeal to two audiences (or three): 1) the RU-vid and vlogger crowd, showing them how the product improves or hinders them from "telling their story;") and 2) the "serious" crowd -- who want their footage to look like it has some semblance of professional quality. You can approach both camps (or split into 3) from the compositional viewpoint of "telling a story." I've already seen competitor's videos comparing the Pocket 2 to the iPhone 13, and commented that the Pocket 2 is a better buy -- since you don't lose the sharpness at the edges and get similar color depth....the iPhone 14 is rumored to be the one to buy....or will it be Pocket 3? The tools just keep getting better. Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated. Off to Best Buy...or should I...? Let me ask you a question and you'll understand my point: which is the better gimbal for cinematic shooting? I mentioned that I'm already shooting in letterbox (119 degrees)....and trying to truly tell a story... I get that the V2 is great for vloggers (as it helped you in the square)....and it can track if I am in the story and not behind the camera....but does it have the range of angles for leading, dramatic shots...? Will either interfere with the wide angles I am shooting? Thanks
@@teddy6735 you have a fair point there. Food for thought. Thanks for sharing it and I will definitely apply some of the points you raise. I will do a 13 vs pocket 2. That sounds like a good and requested video. For smartphones in particular, I created a 2 part video on how and what to do to get the best results and cinematic footage. If you haven’t watched those, I highly recommend them. But I will try to provide some tips for different “crowds” as I think your advise is very good and You’ve totally convinced me.
@@teddy6735 I use the Feiyutech G6 Max. I highly recommend it, especially if you have a heavy phone. Hi Maik, did the gimbal arrive? I have emailed you a few times but for some reason the emailes keep bouncing back. The tracking service says it was delivered yesterday. I just want to make sure you got it all. Cheers.
@@SamuelSotiega yeah seems like emails didnt came through since i didnt recieve any. And for the gimbal, i didnt recieve it yet, but i got a notification yesterday that im supposed to visit my postoffice for a package, so i am pretty sure this is yours :D
Hi Samuel, I just watched your other vid on FeiyuTech G6 Max. How does this compare with Feiyu? Am seriously considering a suitable fussfree gimbal. Also to shoot jib shots with monopod etc.. Thanks! Also just subbed to you, learning things on every vid i watched! 👍
I can only recommend this gimbal if you plan to use the AI sensor. The Feiyutech G6 Max is a proper gimbal that I know full well will do everything and anything you want it to do. I have links in the video's description. I use the G6 Max when using my 13 pro max so I am not recommending you something that I don't use myself.
I kept thinking, you are using the same T-shirt in different episodes, but change the T-Shirt colour and the pattern colour in use Davinci Resolve. If that is true - you've done it very well, I cannot tell at all...😀
Well, I have a few of the same t-shirts with different colours because I just like the style and fit, but there are a handful of videos when I shot things with different shirts and in Davinci Resolve I matched the colours of the t-shirts....
Have watched a few of your videos - really like the way you do them. I think the Hohem iSteady V2 will suit me but I will need a tripod. I saw you used one in your video - which would you recommend that is fairly light but stable?
You can search amazon for "DSLR fluid head tripod" and see the results. It all depends on what size you are comfortable with. This one seems ok amzn.to/3KchW53 but again, that is my view, you have probably totally different requirements and needs. A tripod is a very personal thing. I use DSLR tripods when I do my youtube videos, but use heavier video tripods when doing client work, because they are way more stable (although heavier). I hope I haven't left you more questions than answers..
Hi Samuel, thanks for that. very informative. I am wondering if you know about the Ai editor option as I try to figure out if its possible to edit the text that appears on top of the video. Looks good but can I edit and replace with my text?? It would be another nonsense on this gimbal if I can not edit the text. Thanks a lot
Hello, thanks for the amazing video! Which microphone(s) would you recommend to use with this gimble? Thanks. (doesnt matter if its shotgun or wireless)
@@SamuelSotiega Wow thanks for the mega fast response. I want a outdoor travelling vlogging kit, like talking but also showing people where I am at. I was impressed with this Gimbal, because of it's AI. Unfortunately I have no idea what microphone to buy, I would like something more light and very portable to travel with. Thank you for your time!
@@PlimbaUrsul Would you say that a lapel mic that you can attach to yourself might be better than a mini shotgun mic? If this is for capturing mostly your own voice, then I strongly recommend a wireless mic. Something small but with a light receiver easy to mount on the phone or the gimbal, like this one. amzn.to/3oAz0sS. If you need something different that allows you to record sound, both stereo (atmos) and also an input so you can connect the lapel mic to it, I recommend a zoom H1N recorder with a lapel mic. This link gives you all amzn.to/3Jw44T1. This is not wireless, you would need to connect the lapel to the h1n and then press record every time you start recording on camera. But you gain the fact it has a pair of good XY stereo mics, so you can record the outdoors and atmos. I personally use this option over wireless because mounting accessories to a gimbal tends to make things more complex. But that is just me and my workflow. Syncing audio in your edit software these days si super easy, it's all done almost automatically by the program itself so that is not a worry. Was this helpful, Daniel? Let me know if you have any more questions.
Great video and very informal, have you looked at the Hohem RS 01 Selfie Stick which comes with a very versatile remote, I've just ordered both of these items Hohem Isteady V2 and RS01.
I really hope you enjoy both them. I never imagined that I would be using the hohem isteadyv2 almost in every video I make outdoors. The AI sensor is great and it helps introducing movement to some of my shots. As if I had a camera operator with me when in fact I don’t. I use primarily the AI sensor, as you saw in the video. Do let me know how you feel about this combo once you get it and start playing with it!
Nice. I want a gimbal that I can use it while doing live streaming on WhatsApp, Zoom or Teams showing the surrounding place to my audience but the gimbal can stabilise the phone while I move around. Can these 2 gimbal do that? Meaning there is no person for the gimbal to focus on 😬
I can only recommend this gimbal if you/re gonna use the AI sensor, as I showed in the video. Otheriwse, I would recommend a zhiyun smooth 5, easy to use and operate, you can do either vertical or horizontal and the app is quite decent. I did a review for it, you might find it helpful to watch... I hope thjis is helpful...
Diffeerent gimbals for different uses. Personally, unless you see a regular use for the AI sensor on the hohem V2, in terms of gimbal, the smooth 5 is far superior. The the hohem is tiny and fit in your pocket, he smooth 5 doesn’t. It depends on your needs and requirements. Do you use heavy payloads? If you tell me the type of use that you intend to do, I might be able to give you a better answer.
In that video I used a lapel mic attached to my clothing, and recording into a zoom H1N in my pocket. Super easy to sync audio in post these days… the phone was just recording guide track.
Hi! I follow your videos on RU-vid and wanted to reach out through here hoping it was easier to reach you. I’m an aspiring travel vlogger looking to buy some new video equipment for my next trip. I am new to film and will be learning as I go. I currently have an iPhone XS which I will be using and a go pro 4 (I know both are outdated). I want to buy a handheld gimbal stabilizer and am not sure whether to buy the Hohem isteady v2 or the dji pocket 2. I also don’t want to bring my MacBook with me to edit video since I will be traveling for months on end with o my a carry on bag and personal backpack. So I am thinking about buy an iPad Air 4th gen to edit videos. I need for my equipment to be compact. Do you think I can manage with the devices I proposed? Are there other devices I should look into? Also, can I decently edit videos on a tablet?
The hohem isteadyV2 is great if you plan to use the AI sensor for solo filming. I use it all the time in my videos, it works awesome, but that is the only use I have for the hohem's gimbal. If you want a gimbal that works as a gimbal, consider either the zhiyun smooth 5 or the feiyutech g6 max. I have videos for either one of them. Trust me, you get what you pay for, especially in tech. The pocket 2 is amazing, I also use it all the time. You could literally use a smartphone holder mount, attach the phone to the pocket 2 and have a large screen for any gimbal shots, and then easily switch to the phone if doing anything static, if you choose to do tripod shots. As a matter of fact my next video is "is the pocket 2 still relevant in 2022?" and it is published sometime next week, Wednesday or Thursday so that might be interesting to you. You have a decent phone and a decent gopro. You gotta use whta you got and that is the right attitude. It all depends on your budget and long/short term view. The pocket 2 will set you back, with the creator's combo and a set of ND's, somewhere around the $800 mark, which is a fair amount of money. I would suggest you get a "cheapish" gimbal, like the zhiyun smooth 5 or G6 Max, which will be around $200+, use it with your phone and then decide whether such configuration works for you or you need something more compact. If you have the budget, the pocket 2 is brilliant because it can be as discreet as you need it to be, or attach a screen and be a little less discreet. In terms of editing, I would strongly suggest an M1 MacBook Air over a tablet, for editing purposes. I use the M1 Air all the time, super lightweight. Watch this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vp_6V5bLXHc.html from Mattie Happoja about using an iPad for editing. You might find it enlightening, Ultimately it comes down to your budget, really. Have you considered renting a pocket 2 locally to where you live, take it for a spin and see how it feels, before considering buying? that's what I would do!!
The AI is a sensor at the top of the gimbal, it is not software in the app. It is pointing towards you, in the selfie position, hence you need to "cheat" it as I did in the video. It would be great if HOhem would make it so you can twist it to be used with either front or rear cameras...
I recommend it because of the AI sensor but I do say it has restriction if movement. I am quite specific about it. I even say I wouldn’t use it myself as a gimbal but only when using the AI sensor for filming myself. Maybe you didn’t watch the video to the end… but Hohem has the M6 these days that is miles ahead and one that I recommend… Have you considered that one? I reviewed recently if interested..
For this particular video I used a lapel mic recording into a zoom H1N in my pocket. Simply because at the time I didn’t have the current wireless mic set up I use. It is called Hollyland lark 150 and my last video is just about them, if interested. Nowadays I also tape the mic onto my body or onto my shirt, to hide the mic. I also use URSA fomies to fit the mic inside so they protect the mic from picking up the noise from clothing or hair when you hide the mic inside clothing. If you want I can provide links, if that helps you… i am planning to do soon a video about recording sound giving some tricks and techniques…
this gimbal is great for that. I actually use this gimbal a lot for my solo filming. The AI gets triggered by just doing the OK sign with your hands. This is just unique to this gimbal but I wish more gimbals would implement that or better technology... To me, it's the way forward.. Would this gimbal and the AI be of any help to you and your filmign style?
Potentially, yes, but I would probably recommend the hohem M6, which I recently reviewed. Please watch that if you have time and then let me know what you think.
I have a video comparing this gimbal to the new OM5 coming out in 2 weeks time and in it I will go in more detail through the features. But in this video I wanted to focus on something this gimbal offers than no other does and how you can take advantage of. That is, the AI tracker.
if you mount the gopro to the gimbal using the AI sensor at the front, the gimbal will pan and tilt as the AI sensor tracks your face (up to 30ft in my tests as long as in the clear and nobody around or crossing the gimbal/ camera) but the tripod itself will be static. I hope I understood the question right, let me know otherwise....
Same concerns here sir. I got s21 ultra and in the market of finding my first gimbal. Considering to start filming with my phone. Don't have any filmic pro or protake yet. CHeers!
@@GnarutaM I use filmic pro and their film pack (the one that gives you the ability to film in log color space) because it works great and In always get consistent results, no matter what. If you don’t use too many accessories, the Smooth 5 gimbal is good. If you plan to or already use plenty of accessories, the Feiyutech g6 max or Zhiyun crane M3 are great options. I have a few videos about them, if you want to see them in action and assess whether they fit your style or not…
@@GnarutaM well, hohem has its own app but because lost of the relevant settings you can do on the gimbal itself, you can use filmic pro while you change settings in the gimbal itself. As a matter of fact, that is how I do it. I use it mostly for the AI sensor, which I haven’t seen any other gimbal implement.
Love the 16 X 9 AI video content, but what about using a 1.55 anamorphic with this gimble that would show gimble in the field when using 2.76:1 Ultra Panavision. I did get the FeiyuTech G6 Max and it's a real game changer. Thank You
Well, I am planning to do another video about this gimbal talking and showing the many uses the AI sensor offers to different content creators. I could include that in it, for sure. @@SamuelSotiega I mean the wide angle built in function in iPhone. I have an iPhone 13 mini, and I would like to shoot wide angle (0.5x) with a gimbal.
So, I got got this gimbal and have now used it for a few hours. I have the OM4, but got it for the AI sensor,, as I film mostly alone. Here is what I found. 1. It's stabilization is very good, better than the DJI OM4. 2. The AI sensor works very well. I was able to do some walking past shots and it kept up nicely. 3. The controls work as expected. I do wish I could change the different gimbal modes (pan, pan-tilt, all etc.) without having to use the app. You can switch between photo / video with buttons, which is nice. 4. The app has good control of the motors. Slowing down the gimbal really smooths things. 5. I can't tell how much charge the gimbal has without turning it on. Also, despite charging for 2+ hours, I don't get 3 dots, showing it is fully charged. Despite that, it does have good battery life. Used it for 3 hours yesterday with a big camera -Samsung Note 20 Ultra and had no issues. I did not use the AI sensor during that time, so not sure how much that would have impacted things. 6. While charging there is no indication it is being charged and no indication that it is fully charged. Overall, I love it. My only real issue is that I can't figure out the charging. I have read the instructions and saw nothing about charging that helps. I am wondering if I am missing something. Again, this is a great video that helped me alot.
Glad you found the video helpful. If you press and hold the bottom left bottom and press once the button on the right, you go to pan-tilt follow mode, twice pan-follow, three times goes into lock-mode, four times and goes into POV. I hope this helps! I do get the 3 white dots at the front flashing as it charges in 33% increments and full steady green when fully charged. Does yours do the same?
@@SamuelSotiega Thanks for letting me know about the modes. That is very helpful! I do not get any indicator lights when charging. I have a suspect I know why now, so will test. I am using a high speed phone charger and thinking it doesn't like that. It seems to charge to 2 bars (which you can only see by turning it on) and that is it. Hope this works, because now that I know it's supposed to work like that, I might have to return it for exchange.
@@thefourthquarter7429 i would recommend that you don’t use a fast charger. Use standard 2V or 5V but no more. I bet you will get it to recharge fine that way. Please test and let me know, keen to know how you resolve this.
@@SamuelSotiega Hi Samuel, yes, put it on a 5v charger and started acting like you said. Note that it appeared to not take much charge from the fast charger. I am thinking it charges for a bit then stops...maybe some kind of protection. I must admit to being a bit relieved. Thanks for your help resolving this!
It works just as good in vertical. It is mostly designed to track faces so I have bever tried a car. The thing with tracking features is that they are designed to track a face or object on its own environment, not in an environment where there are many people or objects. It won't know how to stay tracking if you have many things crossing the frame. You'll just lose the tracking. Always bear that in mind....

A good 15-20 ft at least. But that is something I haven’t actually accurately tested. When I go out filming next, I’ll measure it and reply to this message so you’ll know.
I actually tested this for you today and the AI sensor stopped tracking at 30ft. That is mega wow! @@sibertiger17 The most important thing you need to bear in mind is to move slowly, no sudden or fast moves, otherwise, it can respond a bit abruptly. It's like everything in life, a bit of practice, trial and error goes a long way. All youtuber using iPhone to review most accessories, as there no mobile in the world but iPhone .. I don't mean you but youtubers should consider this point that not all people using iPhone, there are many types of mobile should be tested by the accessories to be equal evaluation Accept my comment with pleasure 🙏
I take your point and you can clearly see that this gimbal and what I demonstrated works with whatever phone you mount. You can't just hold against people if they choose to use an iPhone over another phone. For every person who prises Apple and their ecosystem, there is another one who rants about it. For me (and I guess for many) the functionality, speed and reliability that I get from apple products is something I know I can't get with Android, Windows, whatever. I can literally shoot in the forest, and set up my iPhone so I can upload the footage to my MacBook while I am travelling back home to be ready when I get to my editing desk. All done in 2 clicks. Airdrop is amazing, so many other examples of seamless integration between apple products to make my life and workflow easier and simpler. But what works for me does not necessarily work for the person next to me. You should ask yourself, why is it that content creators prefer phones over other phones? There must be a reason, don't you think?
