..Totally agree/concur with you there!! Those guys, were born to sing together like that in that 65-67 era! This was popular right after "On A Carousel, May/June 1967, as we relocated to Arizona from NY. Again, what a group!!
..There will never be another Manchester-based great group like the mid-60's Hollies, with Nash, Clark, Hicks, backed by great drumming via Bob Elliott and good bass-playing by either Eric Haydock or Bernie Calvert!! What a group! Wished I could've seen this incarnation in concert!! Sam Burkes, Hollies fan
..Irene Downie, I certainly cannot refute that!! I wished I could ve had the opportunity to see this great, iconic British group live in concert..but, Alas, didnt!!
Song was written by Graham Nash about Marianne Faithfull who had had a short fling with band member Allen Clarke. He changed the name title to not be so obvious; I first heard this lovely catchy tune in grade school and fell in love with it… from one Mari Ann to another🌸 😻
@@lilajagears8317 Great songs indeed, but not really due to Terry Sylvester's contribution. That being said, I think he ably filled Graham's shoes w the high harmonies during his tenure w the band.
@@shannonlucas2980 Yes, true this is..But as I may have stated before, he was a great stopgap replacement..but he was no Graham Nash! Tho they did have a few hits with Sylvester afterwards. You couldntve said it better!!
So. so very true indeed! Nash had an unbelievably clear, precise range in the upper vocal registers, his pitch/intonation/vocal blend were near perfect, if not so!!
Killer stuff! I laughed so much during the interlude when they all started walking around the stage, looking for the source of the Caribbean steel drums! Allan checking the inside of his pants was unexpected, but only he could make it look amuzing. Thanks, Lynn!
Graham William Nash, OBE (born 2 February 1942) is a British singer-songwriter known for his light tenor vocals and for his songwriting contributions with the British pop group The Hollies, and with the folk-rock band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Nash is a photography collector and a published photographer. Nash was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Crosby, Stills & Nash and as a member of The Hollies in 2010.
I think this is the only group left from the 60s that all the original members are still alive. To bad they don't get back and do a few shows they were and still are one of the best bands ever.
THis group was soo talented.... I dont have to tell anyone here , Alan Clark, great lead vocals..and with Grahm's higher voice They were something, ,, At Times Im awestruck at all the great bands/ music we had in the 60's. THis was certainly one of the Great ones.
Graham Nash had the rare distinction of performing in two acts that were among the most instantly recognizable in music history. I'll let go that he muffed it here.
Maybe the best 'band' of the decade... i mean drummer, guitarist and the vocals. of course The Beatles are my fav band ever, im just saying these guys were great at many levels. when it came to musicians...well
I admire the band for sure. The vocals are what made the band. I think The Who were the best musicians. I'll tell you why. The band was innovating a different way of playing. Moon would have his drum parts going all over, Entwistle later on would improvise almost lead guitar riffs vs. bass. Pete Townshend had to show the audience where the beat in everything was, by slamming on those chords. I can't think of another band structured like that for that period of time. Townshend was quite a smart musician, smart enough to play the way and songwrite the way he did.
What wonderful clear sound and video from Croatia, no less! And amusing interruptions too! Wonderful video. Their harmony sounds wonderful, really crisp and striking. An underrated band. I think Nash should have stuck with them. CSN's profound hippie musings don't age as well as these dumb innocent jewels.
Wonderful recording. Judging by Graham's comments and body language, The Hollies weren't well-known in Croatia. Fabulous piece of nostalgia. Nash/Clarke vocals are so distinctive.
Yea … the "high" life in Laurel Canyon. He said he went there because he felt "right-at-home". OMG. I bet he felt right at home in the arms of a certain lady that he wrote a song about their living arrangements. He should have stayed with the, The Hollies. True Crosby, Stills, and Nash (and then Young) were an incredible group and made an indelible mark on the music scene but I feel the Hollies were the same. Terry Sylvester was good but let's be hones he wasn't no Graham Nash.
I've been to concerts like this one! Oh Joey, how he I love the Hollies. Pitch and movement towards the Greatest Good, a little rock number, Carrie Anne Carrie AAAnne
Very underated and belong in the HOF. Tight and great vocals and guitars. We will not see their likes again. Todays bands can't do it, to busy getting tatoos and body piercings.
thnx, lynn - just precious - all of them! yes, Tony, i do still love you!! this whole concert puts me in such a good mood every time i watch it. : ) that tony-tease bit and the drums-down-the-pants gag was always good for a laugh!! i love how they just ad-lib and play off each other throughout ! bjkatt7 and chriscurtisfan - ur not alone ; ) what a priceless performance - top notch, HOLLIES!!! - kc
Thanks Lynn, I loved see each of the videos that postou. For me that I am fan of the Hollies Allan Clarke and especially loved to see him talk, play and make a show of talent with his interpretation and voice magic. Obrigada Lynn, adorei ver cada um dos vídeos que postou..Para mim que sou fã dos Hollies e principalmente do ALLAN CLARKE adorei ver ele falar, brincar e dar um show de interpretação e talento com sua voz mágica.
Very weird--did they play that steel-drum interlude tape everytime they did the song live? Reminds me of the "Live at the BBC" version of "Hard Day's Night" with an obvious splice of the guitar solo from the original record--wacky!!! And Allan looking down his trousers is pretty damn raunchy for 1968 television!
Funny, Allen looking down his pants for the steel drum. That’s really pretty racy for 1968.A performance that well done not lip-syncing is amazing in its self.
you're not kidding. i am doing a gig backing Terry Sylvester, who'll be doing Hollies tunes ( and a few other things ) ....i have been assigned to cover Mr. Nash's parts.....wow. just .....wow.
Graham Nash seems to be exceedingly, errrm, of altered consciousness during this Croatian live TV gig; early '68, I'd venture speedballs (50/50 mix Heroin/Cocaine) and his customary weed, especially as he appears to have forgotten half of his verse, and the symptoms (that strange behaviour, very different to Dave Crosby's obvious cocaine-fuelled performances during the 60s, 70s and 80s - he had to do rehab so many times, often Court-ordered -) of such a mixture of drugs are pretty obvious if you know what you're looking for! One thing about Mr Nash though is that his high tenor rarely, if ever wavered, no matter in what condition he would take to the stage. Sublime voice and his 3-part vocal harmony arrangements, originally with Tony Hicks, then the Masters of the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, never ceased to improve. Check his solo album 'Songs for Beginners', which he had been wanting to do since even before the Hollies hit the big-time; you can hear a decade's worth of influences and writing practice in almost every song, and that lush third verse of 'Wounded Bird' hit every spot he'd been working to hit up until then. Anyone know for sure what his 'poison' was at this time (I think this was recorded in Feb 1968)?
2:04 allan clarke:oh shoot. tony hicks: who is doing that?. bobby eliott: probably nothing. bernie calvert: something's wrong here. graham nash: am i doing that?..
Whoa! Great video. Nice to them live. It's great to see these old videos on the net & I learn so much! I never knew Graham Nash sang with the Hollies. is that THE Graham Nash that sang with Steels & Crosby ? Thanks for this video. Neat to see them improvise & clown around, rather than just stand still & strum .
so deep purple,s management wanted them to be like the hollies, well great as the hollies are, the world was steamrollered by mk2 purple, oh the glory of 69-73 long live mk2
