The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I never read a statement that summed up the music of the 60s and early 70s, which I thank God that I lived through. I can only add that I thought that the creativity and talent would blossom into more of the same that would last forever. A youthful fantasy that sadly was proven a deception.

Top 40 AM radio.... the incredible music 🎶 kept going around the clock
@NoviJimB
@NoviJimB 2 года назад
I was born in 1960 and had several older siblings, two who were musicians, and a dad who listened to top 40 radio. I started paying attention to the radio and albums that were being played by late 1963, and once The Beatles came along I was hooked. I had no idea how lucky I was, that the most amazing era in rock history was going on. And it kept up into the 70's before times really started changing and the industry took over. The combination of talent and creativity in the industry was ridiculous. So many groundbreaking bands, so much versatility, so many bands with their own unique sound. We were incredibly lucky, and we'll have that music forever.

I was in high school when this song was in the air waves. It's such an evoking song, but the line that says: "Go, and beat your crazy head against the sky; try, and see beyond the houses in your eyes. It's ok to shoot the moon," always fascinated me. Today, I am in my late 70s and over my college years and subsequently since then, I taught myself how to play the guitar. Darling Be Home Soon is one of my favorite songs to play and sing. Sometimes someone who was of music listening age in the late 60s will tell me (s)he remembers the song, and the memories it brings back.

I was so fortunate to see the Lovin' Spoonful at the University of Dayton Fieldhouse in March of 1966 at the age of 16 after a quart (or two) of Stroh's beer. The electricity went out in the entire facility about 2/3's of the way through their set. Within 5 minutes, the Spoonful quickly converted to an acoustic set which was simply marvelous for the rest of the concert. John Sebastian was just so talented. Outstanding concert 55 years ago! No other band seemed to capture the vibe, and complexity of those times quite the same way. I bought every single they released. Their music is timeless. FUN FACT: The extra "Darlin'" after the orchestral break, before the final chorus, was initially a mistake by Sebastian, who came in early with the vocal. But upon playback they decided to keep the mistake in because it was a solid vocal take. It ended being a signature element of the song to the point where John ended up throwing it in on purpose during live shows to mimic the recorded version.

Darling Be Home Soon is an excellent tune. His Summer In The City Is a great (repeat a 2nd time - great) tune. Now knowing he grew up in the Village, you can hear and feel the city in that tune.: the street, congestion and heat. It should be required listening for songwriting 201

I thought this guy John Sebastian was just like me, but only I was never backed by an orchestra of violins and trombones. I guess that was the beauty of it, that it made an ordinary guys love struggles seem so significant. But in retrospect it was more like the end of the movie 'Casablanca' when Bogart says 'Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.'
