As a child of the 60's and teen of the 70's, this is indisputably one of the coolest songs ever recorded. It contains so many iconic aspects to it. The opening. The washboard guitar .The riff. The wrecking ball voice. The indistinguishable lyrics [ for the most part ]. That "Whoo!!" It's length is the only negative.

The Hollies were a 1960s band (formed in '62) that continued to be popular into the mid-1970s. If you listen to some of their earlier work you will really here a quintessential '60s sound, and "Long Cool Woman" actually sounds more modern than many of their earlier hits. As others have suggested, you need to listen to "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", which is one of the best of the 'peace, love and brotherhood' themed songs from the classic rock era. Incidentally, Graham Nash, of Crosby, Stills and Nash, was one of the members of this band, although he had left the band by the time this song came out.
I'm with you about trying to find some positivity and a distraction. Given current events we can all use it. Love me some Hollies. My sister had this song on one of the compilation records that were so popular in the 70s as this came out in '72. I've been jamming to it ever since.

The 70's will always be my favorite era of music. It was an uplifting and happy time in music. This song is one of my all time favorites and my son loves it now too, decades later. It is the one of the coolest songs ever. Full blast is the only way to listen to this tune.

Yeah, I know what you mean, the song came out just early enough in the 70's (1972) to still have that 60's vibe. I also love that echo effect they use at the end of the song. I can't listen to this without remembering how my mom and my brother use to sit on the floor and play it on their guitars, what times those were. Love this group. The Hollies are a British pop rock group formed in 1962 & known for their great harmonies. They were part of the Merseybeat scene. They had so many great songs such as "Bus Stop", "Stop Stop Stop", "On A Carousel", "Carrie Anne", "Just One Look", "Here I Go Again", "Look Through Any Window", "King Midas In Reverse", "Jennifer Eccles", "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" & "The Air That I Breathe". "Graham Nash" was originally in this group & left in 1968 to form "Crosby, Stills & Nash".

You are so spot on. I have spent 2 days crying over this travesty and then came across flash mob videos singing the likes of Pink Floyd, Queen, Michael Jackson etc. The flash mobs were world wide, Hungary, Russia, Japan on and on. It dawned on my 64 year old brain then that the one thing that unites us all is music. I was stunned by Rock City. What? 400 drummers? Unbelievable guitarists? Guys, the "Sixties Era" is from 62-72 , "Fifties' 54 (The term "Rock and Roll coined by the DJ Alan Freed in that year) -59. There is a brief era 59-61 which is dominated by Girl Groups, groups like "The Four Seasons" style, and Folk (which extended, grew and evolved on through the Sixties. The Sixties rock was dominated by The British Invasion until Psychedelic Scene based in San Francisco took over! There was and on going vital Motown /Soul scene at the same time with some crossover! 73-76 was the giant stadium concert era of the famous Sixties super groups, considered by many, decadent which brought on in 77-80 Punk, New Wave and Disco. 80s has some great individual artist, Rap. Hip Hop and Techno. Nineties: NIRVANA! 2000 -? mostly nothing!

Lots of other great songs by the Hollies-I really hope you will react to "Playing for Change-The Weight" Playing for Change is an organization that unites people from around the world through music-promoting peace and education of children. The Weight was always one of my favorite songs. To hear musicians and singers from around the world doing it from all their different countries was amazing. Be sure to watch for the different countries and all the different instruments used. Truly amazing! One hell of an editing job!
