Actually, the show first began airing in November 1971 in syndication though many stations didn't start airing it until almost a year later, in many cases running a year behind when they were originally filmed from what I remember reading at first.
After watching numerous editions of this show over the past two weeks I have no doubt some of these "stars" were on drugs, alcohol, pills or some combination therein.
