My Bar Mitzvah teacher, Mr. Emil Schonbrun, of blessed memory, was an Auschwitz survivor. He taught Hebrew & Sunday school at my synagogue, I knew him all through my childhood & young adulthood. He was a Tzadik; a great teacher, artist, mentor & friend. I am 68 yrs old now & still love, admire & honor him as I do my own 99 yr old father. He had no children, his entire family was killed by the Nazis. I learned all about the Holocaust from him. We have 3 of his hand drawn pencil portraits framed & hanging in our home including his drawing of me at my Bar Mitzvah wearing the same Tallis I wear today. My father is a WWII vet as well & when I volunteered for Honor Flight, he & I met a fellow vet of his who had been among the 1st to see the Nazi Death camp at Auschwitz. He said he never told anyone what he saw that day, but he had had nightmares about it for the rest of his life. He was crying as he told us his story, it was at Reagan Int Airport before we flew home & a huge crowd of vets & USO volunteers circled around him to hear his story. We were all in tears when he finished! Imagine carrying that secret for your whole life! I have carried the Holocaust with me my entire life as Mr. Schonbrun’s wisdom & teachings have been with me as well. As long as I live, he lives in blessed memory & he taught me to never forget & to honor him, I never will.
