Dr Abramson, Thank you so much for a delightful three-evening lecture series covering a remarkable 3800+ years of Israeli and Jewish history. My wife and I very much enjoyed finally meeting you in person. You are as delightful in person as online. As an Anglican pastor for 43 years, and a fellow lover of history, I have learned much from your insightful, humorous teachings.

Do you do your own green-screen editing of your talks? It is interesting to see the editing of the talk at Beth Israel so that the illustrations that you used in the talk have become your backdrop. Either way, it is very effective.

@@HenryAbramsonPhDThank you professor Abramson for this imformative lecture thanks for sharing the interesting story of youre grandfather ,🇨🇦🍁🔥that fire in canada ive never heard of it was great youre grandfather was able to pull through that diasaster,thanks also for covering how that lands name was changed after 135,i often wonder if the destruction of 70 ce our ad never accourd how that region may look today ,the maccabean revolt was covered very well it seems the books of maccabees where well known in christian circles as you depicted middle ages art work 🐘of elea zers death under antiochus'war elephant💥those books seem to have been even removed from the kjv bible in the 1800s by some prodestant churches which to me i dont understand during jesus'time he would have been famaliar with the story ,as he also revered hanukkah as well ,wishing you the best as Purim comes up🎉🎉👍

Thanks oodles, Dr. Abramson! I've heard much of this in pieces, but it was nice to see it put all together in a single 30-minute narrative. I really appreciated your anecdote about your grandparents, and relating that to our understanding (such as it is) of history. It's a good reminder that these were all real people with real lives, and not just extras on some grander historical drama, which is about all we get from the past. Abraham was an immigrant from Ur who settled in Hebron. He was blessed by a local king for his service in war. Irish annals identify the king of Golgotha in the time of Amenemhat III as Ogamhan. Ogamhan fought a civil war among the Phoenicians between the sons of Nenual and the sons of Niul.

Thank You Dr.Abramson for your illustrative video from Tanzania. I am scientist and I love history and theology, I am curious about the historical Abraham and moses, in theological narration they have done significant things worth notable in history of their respectful regions and still we dont have any archelogical evidence for their existance, Many of my science buddies who are not following any of religion regard all the theological figures from Abraham to Moses as myth produced to by Isrealiets to unjustly comit genocide to the existing civilization already prevailing in palestine. Plz Recommend video to share so as to gate a base for discussion.

I listened once to a Yale course and it was argued that the group who separated from the rest of Caanan tribes and became Jewish was, at least for a while, not very different from them, it was a gradual process of cultural and social differentiation. This makes the story of exodus and conflict after leaving Egypt quite different, if true. Thanks for your dedication and scholarship.

If Jewish Palestinian Aramaic was In use from 200 bce to 200 ce, and likely Judea’s primary language at the time of Jesus and the early Christians, then when And how Hebrew was used?
@freeto9139
@freeto9139 Месяц назад
@@yasim9435I was taught that Hebrew was the lingua franca in Israel; and, Aramaic was spoken mainly in the Decapolis region. A kind of course merchandising language used particularly by fisherman. It was a semitic dialect; so not difficult to pick up if one applies oneself. Also, necessary (!) in order to insure one was dealt with equitably in business. Hebrew, being the language of the Bible; and therefore, the language of education (Hebrew children were educated, boys longer, but girls as well, till the age of marriage). It was also, illegal to teach a Hebrew child any language, except "Hebrew". So, it seems they were endeavoring to protect the culture. After adulthood, or if born outside the land, would have been different. Especially interesting: daughters of Rabbis were considered desirable wives for the insights they would have gleaned from their fathers!

He was an Aramean from a place called Aram and they spoke Aramaic as their mother tongue. Arameans were a branch of the people who lived in the region we now call Syria./Syrians. Yes, that is correct. Abraham was a sort of tribal nomadic head. Perhaps a king of sorts. He traveled with a huge household including guards, fighters/soldier types. They were called iviru or ibiru etc. which is what they would answer when the indigenous people of the portion of the Southern Levant would ask them as to who they were and where they came from. They would say, " we are the people from the other side of the river " / Ibiru. The indigenous people of the area were the ancient Natufian culture; Archaeological culture of the Levant, dating to around 15,000 to 11,500 years ago. They were farmers. At some point they further mixed with the Ancient Iranians and thus became the original "Canaanites." Over time these people mixed with Greeks, Arabs, Egyptians and some other peoples. The Jebusites were one of their branches. The Jebusites owned the Jerusalem ( Yerushalim/ Yerusalim and that general area. Their king was called Jebus. Abraham made a sacred treaty with them and it was inscribed on a huge statue, for all to see. The treaty of non aggression towards them; the Jebusites was broken to some extent by Joshua and later by David, who became King.

Num24:2,5-9 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him. [5] How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel! [6] As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of lign aloes which the Lord hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters. [7] He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted. [8] God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows. [9] He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.

3 chidushim I've learned from R. Ephraim Palvanov 1) Avram was a born in a Hindu (not Baalist Satanic) idolatrous society and from other side might mean from Dharmic influence; only one Temple to Brahma Creator in India today, Creator considered unimportant cuz 'His job is done' - so under this idea Judaism could be considered a branch of Hinduism originally- Hodu/India as farthest East on Tanakh geography just needs a yud to become yehudi- Brahma, god of A bra ham- not to mention Hebrew Sanskrit philological comparison in general 2) Esau wrestled with Yakov and named him Israel (accepted his ability to fulfill both birthright missions- so God confirmed the name later) 3) New paro arose was after overthrow of the Hyksos; the paro of Yoceph was the last Hyksos paro, the Indo-Semitic group that felt cultural affinity for the Israelites (between the ethnicities as a whole as opposed to possible Mesopotamian royal connections between Abraham and Sarai and non-Hyksos paronic royalty- which would make sense why he was so eager to marry her and to so graciously bride priced her heavy nonetheless (a midrash says she got all of Goshen!- and think there a verse in Genesis (keep in mind im not fluent in Hebrew) that implied Yakov or Yudah was like a king of Goshen in Egypt before Exodus- and I think Yoceph gave his mum and dad royal thrones as well)

There is no year zero. Its 1 to 1.

You are correct. It went directly from 1 BC to 1 AD. But he indicated that by referring to the "fictional year zero."

With all due respect Dr. I would disagree with you Abraham would have been about 3100 BC. 5784 Jewish year - 2024= 3760 BC. They were called Chaldeans weren't They. Abraham of Ur of Chaldea? Herodotus wrote about the Chaldeans priests in Babylon. Then they were called Ioudai (ee-ouh-they/ee-ou = Jew)

The Biblical narrative always talks of an individual, eventually a family or a couple of those, traipsing from Mezopotamia to the present day Israel, then to Egypt, then back to the "promised land." But for every family that may have migrated to Egypt, surely there would have been many families that chose to stay put. So when Moses and his tribes returned after several generations, they would have encountered and waged war on their own brethren. Weren't the Canaanites the same Hebrews, merely different by having remained in Canaan, and having developed their own culture and customs in the meantime? Didn't they speak the same language? The same goes for Phoenicians (aka Philistines).

I had someone tell me Moses was a fake story and Gilgamesh was in fact Moses. Any truth in that?
@leperama81
@leperama81 Месяц назад
Not Gilgamesh but Sargon, whose story is much older than Mose's, put in basket in the river, stranger raised him ... That's natural way of how stories propagate, as Abram lived in mesopotamian culture and religion.

I'm sorry, I can not take seriously anyone who takes seriously the stories of Abraham and the Sinai wanderings. I might be curious to know what you think of work like The Origins of Judaism: An Archaeological-Historical Reappraisal by Yonatan Adler, an Associate Professor in Archaeology at Ariel University, 2022.
