The 428 Cobra Jet was available in 1968 Mustangs, Cougars, Fairlane/Ranchero. The 428 CJ carried over to 1970 in the Mustang and Cougar. The Boss 351 was available in many colors, not just 2!! (The Chevy Camaro had the Z option starting in the year it first came out, 1967 and continued on from there, not 1970) Ford colors are called "Grabber" and the same exact color on a Mercury was called "Competition". Ford won the TransAm series in 1970 in a Boss 302. The Mach 1 was also available in 1971. The Torino Cobra came out in 1969, (different body, with a 428 Cobra Jet) and concluded in 1971. Interesting, the video says the Torino Cobra came with a 4 speed manual, yet the video feature car shows the optional automatic. The Shelby GT500 was produced from 1967 to 1970. (old school models, not counting the new stuff) The highest horsepower rating available on the '68 Torino would have been the 428 CJ at 335. No 427's were available from the factory for the Torino. The 289's were used in very early '68 as there were leftovers from '67 production, then phased over to the 302. HOLY COW, got everything right on the Talladega!!! Cougars had 4 speeds available since they came out in 1967. There were 4 colors only available for the Eliminator in 1969. Competition white/orange/yellow and Bright Blue Metallic. The blue Cougar at the end is a 1970, dressed in Competition Blue. Perhaps a little more research next time boys??

I've been out of the muscle car and Mustang restoration scene for a while now, and I may be completely ignorant, but the 428 Cobra Jet was available in the 1968 1/2 Mustang. Hot Rod magazine tested it and ran the quarter mile in 13.56 seconds. Bob Tasca is kind of credited with creating the 428 Cobra Jet. The Mustang Mach 1 with 428 CJ was available in 1969 and 1970, as was the Boss 302. The Boss 302 Mustang was intended to compete on the Trans Am circuit in the 5.0 liter classification against the 1967-1969 Chevy Z28, which had a 302 cid engine as well, albeit the Chevy small block. The 1971 SCJ Mach 1 was a 429 thin wall "385" series, unlike the 428SCJ which was part of the "FE" Y-block family which harkens back to the 352 cubic inch engine displacement of the 1950s. The 1970 & 1971 Gran Torino Cobra Jets were also of the 429 CJ "385" version. GT500s were produced from 1967 to 1970 but Carroll Shelby was pretty much out of the picture by 1970. The 1971 Boss 351 is rare but was available in many other colors such as Grabber Blue. It may have been intended to compete with the Chevy Z28 Camaro, but the Camaro was now a 2nd generation body and featured a 350 cubic inch engine, the top tier possibly known as the LT-1. The Chevy Camaro Z28 was introduced in 1967. The Boss colors were referred to as "Grabber" yellow, blue, red, white, et al. Ford also produced a Cobra Jet 351 for the 1971 year. Ford produced Mach 1 Mustangs in 1971 alongside the Boss 351, the most popular color, seemingly, was Grabber Yellow. The Boss 351 would be replaced with the 351 H.O. The Cougar Eliminator was the Mercury version of the Boss 302 and 428 CJ Mach 1 and featured all the specs as the Ford counterpart including all of the Grabber colors. As for anything else in this video, I am pleading ignorance.

I bought a new Talladega off the showroom floor in 1969. The wife made me put air and a radio in it. Those cars were true "sleepers". They were much lighter than they appeared. With radio delete, no underlayment or undercoating, rubber floor mats, no air and some with heater delete, they averaged about 3500lbs. Even though it was a super speedway bruiser, I just had to put 2-4s on it with an aggressive cam. It was the baddest street-driven stock car I've ever owned. In my town, everybody had Z-28s, which I regularly blew away at the stoplights, because of the 3:50 gear I swapped to. They came from the factory with a 3:00 and a 180mph speedo. All were automatics.

Just as I thought, you missed the mark. The best performing Fords were the '63 Galaxie lightweight w/ the 427FE R-Code engine & the '66-'67 Fairlane w/ the 427FE R-Code. It was the 427FE engine that powered the Ford GT40's in '66 & '67 prototypes to overall wins at LeMans & many NASCAR wins in the Fairlane/Torino/Cyclone. The Fairlane R-Codes were also sold to the public. Unlike the lightweight Galaxie which was only sold to racers. It's to bad Ford didn't follow the lead of Carroll Shelby & the numerous race victories he earned. Ford Jr. was only about the money & beating Enzo Ferrari, but he had no drive to continue racing to better his cars.

My grandmother was born in 1905. She only had Studebakers. When she needed a new car in 1968, my uncle helped her buy a new Volvo. She ended up hating the Volvo and decided she would buy a new car on her own. She went to the Ford dealer and told the salesman she wanted something with some passing power. She bought a new 1970 Torino Corbra with a 429 Cobra Jet. It did not have a hood scoop. Some sources on the Internet claim there were only about six 1970 Torino Cobras with 429 Cobra Jet engines without hood scoops made, but I don't know if that is accurate.

She worked quality control at the Carter carburetor factory and early in her career, she used to talk to Henry Ford on the phone. She said other car makers would report a defect carb and get credit for it, but Henry Ford would would send a whole crate of carbs back for one defective carb. I had a Boss 302 bought off the showroom floor in Canada in 1969. Wonderful car - went like Hell - never found out it's top speed, I chickened out at 135 mph! Zero to 60 in about 5 seconds, (better time than most on this list) but it was still in second gear - man, that 302 Cleveland could rev! It was a DOG around town - could hardly get it out of second gear - but get it on the highway and WOOOWOOOO!! Got did of the shitty tires the first time I needed tires - put on Michelin radials - and I thought it went around corners nice before, but that turned it into rocket around the corners - and they were guaranteed for 50,000 miles! I drove it 180,000 miles in just over 4 years, most of it on mountain roads in British Columbia, winter and summer (rally studded tires all four corners in the winter), it never let me down one time - even in 40 below weather. Changed the oil and filter religiously every 4000 miles - hardly used a drop. Only ever touched the motor for tune-ups - had the rocker covers off ONCE, and put a new clutch in ONCE - and I drove it like Hell! The best thing that Ford ever made as far as I'm concerned - and I still drive a Ford here in New Zealand! Would hate to think what that Acapulco Blue rocketship is worth now!!

Amazing that you could get that many miles out of a Boss 302 engine. That motor had a serious design flaw. The short piston skirts had a tendency to break off and damage the block. Ford issued replacement blocks to make up for it. But so many were junked that they are hard to find as is the parts. I should know I am restoring a 1970 Boss 302 and have had a hard time finding the correct motor parts to restore it. It with a very cool looking car that never lived up to its billing. It was a NASCAR motor from the day that Ford put in a Mustang to make the motor a “production” motor so they could race it in NASCAR. That way they wouldn’t run into the same problem that they did with the 427 S.O.H.C. engine that was banned because Ford NEVER put it in a production car so was deemed an experimental motor and thus banned by all the big racing organizations. Not exactly the same. The Boss 351 had 4 bolt mains. Phase III used standard 2 bolt. The Boss 351 had a high nodular iron crank that was tested for hardness vs. standard production crank in the Phase III. The Boss 351 used the Boss 302 cam profile. The Phase III has a slightly different grind. The connectings rods were diferent. The Boss rods were magnufluxed and shot peened and used 3/8" heavy duty rod bolts. The Phase III used standard forged Cleveland rods. The Boss 351 had forged TRW pop up pistons vs the Phase III which were cast flat topd design. They used different timing chains, harmonic balancers, and distributors. Carbs were different. The Phase III had a 780cfm Holley 4 barrel carburetor vs. 750cfm Autolite for the Boss 351.

The 71 429 SCJ Mustang would run a tick Quicker in the 1/4 Mile, But in a Road Course Type event, the 71 Boss 351 would Wipe the floor with the SCJ. Stop Light to Stop Light Drag Race on the Street, that could be a Toss Up between the two, The Better Driver would probably win. There are a number of errors related to the 1965 Galaxie: 1) The Galaxie was never available as a 2-door sedan in 1965; it was available only as a 2-door or 4-door hardtop, a 4-door sedan, or a convertible. The full-sized Ford 2-door sedan that year was relegated to either the Custom or the Custom 500 entry-level/economy models. 2) The 7-liter engine (427 cubes) was rated at 425 horsepower...not 320 as stated. The 6.4-liter engine (390 cubes) was rated at 300 horsepower with a 4-barrel carb. Other available engines were the 240 C/I six, the 289 C/I V8, and the 352 C/I V8 3) The 6.4-liter engine was MUCH more popular with buyers than the 7-liter; the 7-liter engine was actually extremely rare. 4) Technically, there was no "standard" and "deluxe" Galaxie in 1965...unless you consider the Galaxie 500 XL to be the deluxe model. The XL, however, was considered the sports model, and was to the Galaxie what the SS was to the Impala over in the Chevrolet camp.

Blurred : You left off the 1969 and '70 Mustang Boss 429. They were only rated at 375 horsepower. But that was only because Ford was afraid to list the true horsepower of this speed demon. Many people who owned a '69 Mustang Boss 429, just knew their car had a lot more horsepower. So they would take the car to some kind of speed shop and put the car on a dynamometer. The true horsepower was anywhere from525 to 565 horsepower.

Pretty great list. I owned a 2001 Ford Mustang GT until November of 2021 when I upgraded to a 1969 Mach 1 with the 351 Windsor V8. I bought it off of a guy I know, and I bought it dirt cheap with only 10637 original miles and in pristine condition, plus all original. 30 grand overall for the car. $1000 to get some work to the carburetor done (since it did sit in the guy's heated garage, under a cover for the better part of 8 years) and 29 grand for the rest of the car. It runs like a dream, and I love the rumble. Anyway, I am going to criticize on one thing, unfortunately: The horsepower rating of many of the big block V8s. They were underrated in terms of official numbers. Those beasts are pushing closer to 435 horsepower. One of the reasons being, to get them selling.

Even today Mustang more of a Sports car over musclecar. But most people now a days have no clue what a musclecar is.

Fun fact: Dealers apparently didn't get the memo that THEY were supposed to adjust the spoiler to a 12 deg down angle. Pretty much all Mustangs have the spoiler tilted the wrong way, (as it came "out of the box", so to speak), thus creating lift rather than downforce. You can clearly see it on the '71 Boss Mustang in this video.

I've got a 73 gran Torino with a 429 interceptor making 550 hp and working on a70 boss 429 mustang. Parts are hard to find and not cheap. I wont give up. Love my toys.

Like how he revealed the real hp on the Talladega. We all know they fudged the numbers. You also had several options for the final gear ratio affecting the 0-60 time. You could blister through the 1/4 with a short setup but run the risk of running out of gear. Your options are limited when you only have three or four gears. Love to have the Cougar GT-E. Way too much motor for that size car.
