Join me for something a little bit different, as we take a walk on the windswept Holy Island of Lindisfarne, located in Northumberland, roughly a mile off the coast of the British mainland. Accessible only at certain times of day due to the tides, this is one of the holiest places in Britain, and the place from where Christianity first spread in northern England almost 1,400 years ago.
On our walk around The Holy Island, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including The Heugh, Heugh Hill Lighthouse, Lindisfarne War Memorial, The Lookout, the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, St. Cuthbert's Island, the Old Lifeboat House, the Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Market Place, Lindisfarne Village Cross, St. Cuthbert's United Reformed Church, St. Aidan's Winery - the home of Lindisfarne Mead, The Manor House Hotel, The Crown & Anchor Inn, The White House, Marygate, Chare Ends, The Ship Inn (formerly The Northumberland Arms), Lindisfarne Coastguard Station, Lindisfarne Beach, Lindisfarne Harbour, and Lindisfarne Castle.

Good evening! Thank you so much to everybody for helping us to 4,200 subscribers, and to celebrate, we have a very special walk for this evening - our first away from mainland Great Britain! Admittedly, it's only a mile or so off the coast, but the Holy Island of Lindisfarne is absolutely spectacular! I do apologise for the windy noise in the background at times, the wind is very much a part of what makes the Holy Island what it is, and so I hope you don't find it too distracting :) If you're wondering how to visit the Holy Island, here's the way that I travelled (via public transport) to and from the island in May 2021: - WT2 bus from Berwick-upon-Tweed train station at 10am (costs about £10 round trip - takes 45 mins to reach Holy Island Green Lane car park) - Return via Pilgrim's Way across the sea at around 1pm - then walk about 30/45 mins towards Beal Filling Station, where there's a bus stop for the route between Newcastle and Berwick (there are buses every two hours or so) Bear in mind that all this is entirely dependent on the tide and safe crossing times, which you can find here: holyislandcrossingtimes.northumberland.gov.uk/ I hope that helps answer any questions!

As a child in the sixties I spend several summers on Holy Island staying at the St Vincent de Paul campsite for Catholic Boys. In those more carefree days they used to just turn you out after breakfast and you were left to explore the island on you own. I spent many an hour exploring the priory ruins, swimming off the North Shore, fishing in the harbour, and so on. It probably would sound boring to kids these days but we loved it. Looking at your wonderful video I see some things have changed but much remains the same. It's still an almost timeless, magical place. Does anyone know if the St Vincent de Paul society is still on Holy Island? I might leave them something in my will for making my childhood better.

It really is a stunning hidden gem of Britain's incredible coastline! A mysterious but utterly fascinating place to visit - I would wholeheartedly recommend a day out to Lindisfarne, just remember to check the tide times for when you can get in :) Thank you so much for watching and for your very kind words - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

Fantastic video. Moved to Yorkshire from London in 1993 and discovered the beauty of Northumberland. I've been to Lindisfarne twice before and am going to Northumberland in September and had planned to go there again. Scariest bit was just making it off the island by the causeway with seawater half way up the wheels of my Volvo. I love the place and Northumbrian people.

Wow! That's the ultimate Lindisfarne experience - glad you made it across the causeway safely, make sure to check the tide times when you go back in September! It really is a stunning place, like so much of the Northumberland coast which is so underrated in Britain :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

Ha ha well that's very kind of you to say! There's so much history on the Holy Island that it's difficult to fit it all into one walk or trip, but I'm really glad that you learned a good deal about an old school trip destination. Still, I'm sure you had a fair few good ice creams with your mates back then on the island :) Thank you very much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

I watched this video all the way because I wanted to see the interior of Lindisfarne Castle - and you couldn't get in! Never mind: it was extremely informative and interesting - I'd love to visit, though I'm a long way away. I'd no idea the island was so big - a place I must visit before I die (well, I suppose I could hardly do that afterwards...).
@LetsWalkUK
@LetsWalkUK 3 года назад
Oh no! I'm so sorry we didn't get to go inside the castle - I can assure you it's an impressive place to visit, but that'll have to be something you get to see for the first time when you get the chance to come to the Holy Island :) It's very much worth the trip if you like your history and unique scenery - though if you're in the south/west coast/northern Scotland then you'll definitely need an overnight stay in Berwick-upon-Tweed or somewhere nearby to get to the island in the morning! Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video the whole way through, even if we didn't manage to get inside the castle. I hope you get the chance to visit the Holy Island some day :)

Before I visited Holy Island I was aware of the many warnings about being careful not to get trapped by the oncoming tide but someone would have to be very disappointed with themselves to be in that unfortunate position. I bought a sample bottle of Mead and took it home but wished I had bought a bottle.
@LetsWalkUK
@LetsWalkUK 2 года назад
Indeed it would be frustrating to be caught out by the tides - but better safe than sorry! Mind you, the Holy Island must be wonderfully calm when it's cut off by the sea, I can't say I've ever stayed over at that time though! Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed this video, and I bet you enjoyed that sample bottle of mead :)

Thank you so much. I think that your videos are so professional & informative. You clearly do a lot of research on the area & your walks are meticulously planned & executed. I am actually curious what you are using for the video. As you don't zoom in, I am guessing that you are using a smartphone on a gimbal. I can't hear you breathing so I think you are using a direction microphone & probably a shotgun mic. You could either be using the phone's resident video app or something like Filmic Pro. Am I close? It would be great to see a video on your preparation & behind the scenes.
@LetsWalkUK
@LetsWalkUK 3 года назад
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you're enjoying the walks - I very much enjoy making them, I learn a lot through the research, which is my favourite part of the whole process :) As I'm not much of a photography whizz, the filming setup is really rather simple. I use a GoPro Hero 8 Black on a handheld tripod, and it's surrounded by a muffler to dull the wind noise a little. I do some more sound correction when editing the video, but that's about it - I like to make the walks as close to the reality of being there as possible! I'd be happy to make a video on the behind the scenes of the whole video and editing process if you'd like to see it at some point in the future :) Thank you so much for watching and for your very kind words!

Legendary spot whence the christianization of the islands spread. Monasteries were, and are, centres for maintanence of culture and difusion of religion. Imagine the risks in early middle ages of preaching in this area. But, were local anglo-saxons and vikings turned into christians by the lone efforts of the few people that lived in this island ? Answers are in this short but precious video by L´Walk . We thank you for the tour !

An excellent summary! The Holy Island is a place steeped in history that changed the course of British history, and still has an impact in most of our lives to this day. But as you say, the risks and perils of the island in the Anglo-Saxon era and medieval age were certainly significant - the resolve of those who remained on the island and then returned to rebuild the monastery was quite spectacular :) Thank you so much for watching and commenting as always - I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the video!

You must spend ages researching information about your walks as they are so interesting. We love Lindisfarne and have visited three times over the years, the first time I might not have been so welcome. We had just returned from Bergen Norway and I was wearing a T-shirt with a fully armed Viking warrior on the front, a bit naughty thinking about the history of the island. The walk to the castle is quite a way but having a Blue Badge I could drive, unfortunately the Castle was National Trust and not English Heritage, time for another visit.

Ha ha I do indeed spend a lot of time researching the history of these places - but I just love discovering the history of the UK through making these videos, it's an absolute joy :) Interesting choice there with the Viking T-shirt on the first trip, but I'm sure 1,400 years later the people of Lindisfarne have let bygones be bygones... maybe not, so good thought to change your wardrobe for the following visits! And I do hope you get the chance to visit again in the near future, the Holy Island is a place that only gets more spectacular with age! Thank you so much for watching and for commenting as always - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video :)

Have always wanted to visit Holy Island, regarding it as a place of sacred pilgrimage, so this video came as rather a shock. It is nothing but a secular, commercialised tourist attraction, lead by money making. And all those cars!!!! And the USA was right, Lindisfarne 'mead' with all those extras is definitely NOT Mead. Am glad I watched the video but greatly disappointed by what I saw.
