The home built foamy truck camper is COMPLETE! (How much did it weigh?) Ep. 18

I was looking for a better way to camp and do astronomy in the summer and winter without dying of heat or cold. Tents are hard to heat and cool effectively.
New campers are expensive when on a budget and fall apart in only a few years. This also ruled out used campers as people wanted premium prices for ragged out, old campers. There has to be an easier and cheaper way!
Ever hear of a foamy or foamies? Well I couldn't find a trailer to build out due to supply chain issues but I definitely wanted to try foam building. With RU-vid encyclopedia at hand, I decided to build this 2" foam truck camper instead! Will I succeed or will it melting a flaming mess?
I SUCCEEDED! Dang right I did, but what else did I do and what do I wish I changed! PLUS, what was the light weight REALLY?

Wow! 440lbs? So basically no need for jacks to slide in and slide out of the truck. Just invite 4 of your big buddies and ask them to lift it for you. Just give them beers afterwards. 😜

Just did a Deni... binged the episodes. First, thank you! Just an outstanding job. Like you, I struggled to find a "manufactured" solution for my 2014, F-150, 5'-6" bed, and yeah, I cannot bring myself to justify dropping the dough to accommodate the high cost for a commercially built insulated cab-over camper: Especially for my very single purposed, inexpensive, overnight fishing excursions. I do not need all the latest, greatest engineering, and creature comforts for my fishing trips. However, I do want some comfort from the dynamics of seasonal weather and when first saw your DIY build, I instantly thought "PERFECT!" During and after binging twice though all 18 episodes I continue to ponder some type of cantilevered "cab-over" portion that would extend the interior front to back distance so I can ceiling store my one piece rods with reels and enough strength to support the weight of a bed utilizing the space as the sleeping quarters. Perhaps a bit more fiberglass and patterning to increase strength? Or insetting some sort aluminum frame into the foam?🤔 Anyway, although I am awaiting your video on cost - total, breakdown, etc., I am confident the cost of your build is dramatically less than a commercially manufactured build. Circling back to increasing interior length for space and structural support for the weight of a sleeping adult, I am certain there is solution to my question for extending the cab-over portion that will also still provide plenty of payload weight capacity to spare. When I come up with a cost effective yet sturdy enough design I will be embarking on build inspired by your build. Again, thank good sir.👏

Hi David! Thanks for watching and the kind words. I, too, would like to explore a cab-over-bed and just might in the future. I've thought about several ways to do this including an internal frame covered with 1" foam. I had a couple of designs originally but elected for something simpler on the first go round. The cost video was published on my other RU-vid channel. Georgia Builds One on YT. I also started a new project there as well on a bass boat. Thank you for watching!

@richcherwalk6349 Год назад
Great job! I skimmed through the videos but I believe if you lined the inside of the camper with plywood and a layer or two of fiber glass as opposed to outside it would have greater tensile strength and shear resistance, you still need to fiberglass a couple layers on outside for dent and scratch protection and waterproofing but don't need plywood on outside. Doing it this way would also protect the plywood from any water intrusion. I'm no expert but I've watched many boat building videos.

Question, if you build a foamy truck camper with a true cabover that held a bed facing west and east. Similar to an old Bigfoot 6-11 design. Would that support the weight for two adults?

Figure 8 lbs per gallon for water. Fresh full and grey empty at the start and the opposite at the end. (Worst case situation’s) then add whatever the tanks themselves would weigh.

320 pounds every 40 gallons. Wet bath would probably add another 30-40 pounds. I have 2 gas tanks on my truck and was thinking about replacing both with a single 32 gallon gas tank and installing a 25-30 gallon fresh water where the front tank is.

I had this idea a while back. After looking into a bit I saw videos showing that fiber glass resin gets warm when curing and melts the foam. I’m assuming the brand of fiberglass resin does not have that problem?
@GeorgiaAstronomy
@GeorgiaAstronomy Год назад
@PRIME KIND It will melt the foam if doing a deep pour. Of course it will melt plastic containers if there is a lot in the container. However, laying it up with just wetting out the cloth, it did fine.

They're talking about vinylester or polyester resin, which will disintegrate xps foam. Epoxy resin will not do this.

I’m wondering in the opposite direction. If you built out of, say, 1” foam, would it be the end of the world situation? Or would it be a bit cheaper, a bit lighter, a bit hotter or colder, etc.?
@richcherwalk6349
@richcherwalk6349 9 месяцев назад
@@noellwilson1273 if you go down to 1inch foam probably better to use a higher density weight foam like pvc, boats are built with pvc foam. Obviously it would have less insulation value and pvc is a lot more money. Consider the thicker foam saves you in how many layers of fiberglass you need too.

I was really juiced when I saw your first few episodes of the build completely with foam and fiberglass and then out came the plywood covering the fiberglass and the wood framing to bloat the weight. Why? The entire camper could have been made with foam and been glassed inside and out, and the fiberglass did not need to be nearly so thick especially if you were using high strength S-glass cloth and no chopped fiber. The inside should have been glassed so that attachments for cabinetry and other build out item could be epoxied to the glass. The fiberglass exterior could have been sanded and painted a nice gloss white to reflect the sun keeping things cool in the summer.

@lidieri Thanks for watching! I was concerned about that as well at first. The epoxy is exothermic and doesn't off gas after drying though it generates vapor initially while drying. The XPS doesn't have any VOCs.

Nice build... Let me know if you see Nibiru coming... Lol This is from the enuma Elish Scholars compare it to the Book of Genesis and admit it is describing the formation of our solar system. The Enuma elish was sung aloud every spring equinox celebration, all across ancient Mesopotamia, for around 3,000 consecutive years, and over the rise and fall of three great biblical civilizations Sumer, Akkad, and Babylon itself. It must have been incredibly important to these people, for it to have been celebrated and revered for so very long. Now it seems God has seen fit to reveal it again, to this generation, as proof and testimony to his greatness and Glory. This is Part of the knowledge originally passed from God to Enoch, then on through Noah and his sons, who founded these very ancient civilizations, where it was told and retold and celebrated for so very long. The Enuma elish also answers every anomaly in our solar system that modern planetary scientists struggle to explain, like why the Moon is so big and so close to the Earth, why the Earth has way more water than they calculated should, why the planet Venus rotates backwards on its axis, why the planet Uranus rotates on its side, why the asteroid belt exist, and why Pluto transverse the orbit of Neptune, to name a few. Planet nine as they call it, has already been mathematically discovered, in much the same way we first discovered planet Neptune. It's real name is planet Nibiru, and it will likely devastate the Earth on its next crossing, approximately a thousand years from now. Feel free to fact check any and all of this, that your eyes might be open to the knowledge of the truth. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xW0ER-DtW_o.htmlsi=RAB-lSs3Yuwgtoh6
