In this video I'll share what I've learned first-hand working with canvas and glue (AKA - Poor man's fiberglass) over 2-inch foam as I built my custom micro camper. #PMF #Poormansfiberglass #Canvasandglue
I'll explain the challenges that I experienced and why I ultimately decided to shift gears and skin my walls with plywood instead. I'll show you close ups of the test project that I built using foam covered with canvas and glue (PMF) that lead me to make that decision.
I'll also show you the finished plywood walls, trim and roof of my micro camper up close. I will wrap the video up with my thoughts and opinion about using canvas and glue (PMF) on future projects...
SPOILER ALERT: In this video I will explain why I think the "poor-man's fiberglass/ Foamy community" needs to step forward and start showing the fit and finish of their projects up close so that viewers can see clearly what the end products looks like. PMF and foam is a solid choice and building technique for many people and projects. Step forward, be proud and show the community up close how your project turned out.
PLEASE NOTE: I've deleted a number of "foamy Purists" nasty comments on several of my videos. There is no need for people to be rude, judgmental and to attack the choices that I or anyone else makes on what products we use or how we choose to build a camping trailer. RU-vid is a platform that allows us to share our experiences, help others and collaborate as a community.

I am doing PMF for an off road camper with a clam shell tent sided top. I did not use painters cloth, I used 7 oz canvas purchased online. I didn't have to deal with seams, washing, ironing. etc. I just put down the glue and applied the cloth. The cost was about $4.00 a yard. 60 inches wide. The material had no lumps, laid down easily and it was easy to make it smooth.

Your build is excellent! I had great results with sheer polyester fabric & urethane on the bottom of a tiny plywood fish boat. It was very durable. Also; lighter, stronger, rot proof, uses less paint, smaller joint ridges. Joint ridges can be tapered with cabosil or other filler.

Use UGL basement wall paint. Great stuff for filling coarse surfaces like concrete walls or your canvas weave, sands smooth after drying. Builds up a thick coat fast. The paint also is great at water proofing as that is its intended purpose. Comes in coarse or super smooth texture. UGL even now has a clear version. The paint is designed to withstand up to ten pounds of direct water pressure against it per square inch. Used to waterproof basement walls. Seems to be ideal for waterproofing something like a camper exterior.

I just want you to know that I really appreciate your video and saying the things you did. I have been looking to try and build my own budget DIY Camper and I have been eyeballing the "foamie" approach for the light weight aspect of it. You are correct about there not being very many people giving realistic reviews of these different applications. I have been torn between finishing the outside with real fiberglass (because it's not THAT expensive, and far superior for several reasons) or doing what I call a "Fromie" which is a light weight stick frame-foamie hybrid clad with a thinner wood skin. You earned my respect, and my subscription as well.

I have an idea on the seams... Don't hide them. Accentuate them. Leave a two inch seam as you did and paint it a different color then the wall. For example white wall, but red seam (obviously colors depend on your taste). You can even use a template to add nice designs on the seam.

Very good information! I think everyone starts their build with a picture in their minds of how "perfect" it will be! At some point working with PMF they come to the realization that if you want it perfect, you are going to work your butt off. On the flip side, they sometimes settle for "good enough." You did an excellent job showing some of the real problems a person might face while building a "Foamy" or even a hybrid type. You knew what you wanted and did what worked best for you and it looks great. Still very lightweight even with the few pounds of wood added. I was very fortunate in my "Foamy" build. I work for a styrofoam factory that specializes in structural foam. My camper is smaller than yours and a basic square-ish teardrop style. The design is simple and mainly for my wife and I to take with us on our overland adventures but still turns quite a few heads at the campground. Because of where I work, I was able to build my with 3 pieces of foam that were cut exactly to specs of my build. 2 walls for the sides. And one piece that becomes the roof and front and back of the camper. That made it extremely easy to use the PMF method and since, by design, the large one piece overhangs the sides 1 inch so I could tuck lighting up in there and also make it seamless so to speak. For the paint I used a basement paint. Offhand I can't remember which but 3 coats of it and it looks great! This year is our 3rd year with it and we love it just as much now as the day we dreamed it up and put it on paper! Again, your build is awesome! And in your shoes I would have done the same thing! You saw a problem and found an awesome way to solve it! And then you went above and beyond and shared your experience with others. I sometimes think that those with the negative comments are most likely the ones that are jealous that they didn't or can't build their own camper. Sorry this was long but just wanted to share my thoughts on a great video and also maybe someone will read this and spend some money at a place like where I work for a design that works for them. After all, it's still cheaper than lumber right now!

I'm kind of fussy myself so what I'm doing is using the seam overlap as a paint line. In other words, I've overlapping around a corner 1 inch and then painting that 1" a border color. That way, I can use the PMF and still hide the seam. Is it going to be perfect, no, but if anyone says anything, I'll ask them where their homemade camper is located. :) Best of luck!

You did a good job explaining the realities of pmf. Thanks a lot! For filling in holes in wood, an old trick I was taught, was to use wood glue along with sawdust from what I was working on. It makes a sort of paste. I'm sure something along that line of thinking could be used to fill in some of the imperfections. Also, KILZ is a good primer that covers up imperfections pretty well.

Let me ask you this, does adding the plywood help enforcement for bolts installation? I've never done poor Man's glue and foam before but I did get hung up when it comes to installing bolts I felt they may crush the foam and poor man's fire real ass alone. What's your thoughts on this?

Both a resistant polyurethane glue will never be 100 percent water proof because at the molecular level thiers are gaps but it takes alot of soaking and pressure to happen so for build a frunituer it's just fine to use 2 and 3 is more for wooden boats

I haven't researched these things very extensively at all, but I found a person who has built several poor-man's fiberglass (PMF) campers and it "SOUNDS" pretty simple. Yes, you want to wash and dry and iron the canvas before you use it and make sure you straighten it when applying without pulling too much so that it doesn't stretch out - just iron down gently. But anyway, put a layer of the Titebond II glue thick enough to adhere that side well but not super thick because you DON'T want the glue to soak all the way into the canvas, but just enough glue to hold it good so the waterproofing is from the exterior paint. You want the canvas to still have enough ability to soak up the paint on the other side. Then you put 1 layer of canvas, making sure it's ironed down smoothly, and yes you want to overlap and glue down all edges good as well (Also remember if you're wanting to cover the whole thing, you kind of have to work from the bottom up because you want your upper layers of canvas to OVERlap the lower layers so of course any water keeps rolling down over the PMF instead of coming to an upward-facing seam it could leak into if it started to wear.). Then you just do a 1st layer of 50:50 exterior paint and water and let it dry completely, and just like you explained having to sand down each layer of paint to hide the wood grain, you sand this down, and then do a 2nd layer of 75% paint/25% water and let that dry completely, sand that down again (yes, lots and lots of sanding IS the key to get a nice finish -- you just have to accept that as necessary work), then the 3rd layer is full paint and let that dry completely. That's the waterproofing. Now if you want to do your final full paint for the design you want on the outside, you might want to sand the 3rd layer of full paint waterproofing again so you have the final smooth exterior ready to just to make pretty and possibly a glossy finish. I don't think making the canvas look good is any different than making the wood grain disappear. Sanding and layers is the key.

I recommend using the canvas over the top of the exterior plywood. The canvas will stop plywood from drying, shrinking and ruining the project. The sailing ships use their old canvas sails and paint to protect their hatch covers.

Your video was perfect. I was thinking that the seams could be part of the design by hiding them under trim. I live in a very high wind area. thanks for the video ! I'm totally of a opposite opion about where to leave the ridge seems. it seems to me that with the roof seems you would have a situation that would be enough to hold water even it were ever so little. But over time even a little standing water can't be a good thing . I would rather have no seem by using enough fabric to first wrap around the entire unit folding a good bit under the bottom , then bring another layer or layers down over the entire unit again rapping these layers under where you can either create a definite drip edge by rolling them over & tacking them down with the addition of a rapped firing strip or pvc pipe to make a very defined drip line off the under side where you want it . This lay out would hide all seems to give you that clean look you seem to be going for. Thanks again as I am about to do my 1rst of a few trailers I have planned to use this PMF on. You gave me good information And I thank you!

Seems like a high build primer would get you a more refined texture. It might be possible to run a 45 degree channel in at the corner with a rail saw or router. Then you could tuck the edges of the fabric back in on themselves.

I think a good way to hide the seems up top is to use some angled aluminum and use that sealant they use around all the roof vents. That would hold the aluminum and and hide the seem from the roof that goes over the side. Or u could liquid nail the trim on as well. I think

I used that over Fir AC Plywood on a pickup box I built to make the truck into something like a box van. That Henry's was an amazing product. Think of it as a true waterproof paint. Hi, I know a little bit about material and canvas may be the traditional base for poor man's fiberglass but there are much better options now. I think flat silk or satin weave microfiber cloth would be stronger and incredibly smoother. The cheapest and widest width retail available microfiber would be flat California king top sheets. You could buy microfiber off the roll from any fabric store (online you could find more options) but the widest they would have is 60 inches by any length up to about 36 feet. (Although you might get lucky and find a remnant store that sells remnants from the textile industry and those would be wider.) The next best option would be 100% cotton quilt backing which would be smoother by far than canvas but perhaps not as strong (although probably still strong enough) and it comes in a max of 120 inches by any desired length up to 36 feet. You are going to be amazed at how much finer and smoother the texture of both of these options.

When a friend needed large flat sheets of fiberglass and Kevlar for a project, he found a couple of 6x8' sliding built in wardrobe mirrors locally that were free to collector. He glued one to a sheet of MDF, added extra structure behind that to keep it flat, and added legs to make a kind of laminating table. When he needed a sheet of fiberglass, he'd just smother the table in release agent, Polish it up, and layer up the the rough shape he needed on that. He found that once he could lift an edge, a few blasts of compressed air would pop the sheet right off the table, and it left him with sheets that were perfectly smooth on one side. I'm wondering if a similar setup could be used to "Pre skin" shaped sections of foam in canvas and glue to get a really smooth/flat surface before popping them off and gluing them together? I'm thinking that wetting out the canvas really heavenly with glue, then weighting down the foam on top would get it to stick well enough. The only problem I could see with using wood glue with this technique could be that the glue around the edges would set quickly and then seal in the glue at the middle of the panel, so curing times could be several days/weeks/months. It would need to be tested to see if that was the case.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Its always better to learn about the problems before you start a project. I'm thinking about building a small camper trailor for the bycicle. It has to be very light and should be not too expensive. I want to use foam for the walls and plywood for the roof (teardrop shape). The goal is not a super perfect finish. I even would like to see the structure of the fabric. Do you know how heavy the combination of glue, canvas and some layers of paint is?

Not really. A gallon of paint will weigh between 8 and 9 pounds. You can probably look up the weight of the foam and other building materials. Good luck on your project.

I think most people who set out to build one of these "foamies" knows going into it that the end result is not going to be as smooth or professional as can be done by manufacturers. My opinion is that that's part of the charm these DIY campers have--flaws here and there. It goes along with the whole "poor man's (fill in the blank)".

wat you could do is put a line of glue along the edge (littla away from the edge) ) before cutting the sewed edge off , this should fic the weave in place , then start glueing and actually fray the edge even along the whole circumference by pulling the treads that are weaved in across if you glue the fraying against the foam you should get a nice feathered edge you can lay the next sheet over think if you want it realy smooth i think you be best off using an automotive filler primer (sprayed on) and sand that smooth , it lays up way thicker than the titebond water mix ever would , another option would be to mix flour gipson or another fine powder thats waterresistand intoo the titebond to give it more body so you need less layers as for laying it on the foam flat , maibe you can stretch the canvass on a frame and lay the canvas once wetted with the glue mix over the foam while still on the frame and cut it after its on there to fold the edges over the foam should help stretching the material even over the full surface

Repair dents in the wall after the glue dries before painting. Fairing compound, bondo, etc. The pmf seams can be covered with aluminum angle or wood just as you did with the plywood. Fiberglass panels might be the only way to get a perfect finish without a lot of work. That being said the wood is awesome.

Prople are in such a hurry - to those find your back-button; then when you click on a vid longer than 30 seconds, use it. I did a PMF project and it held up well. But even knowing it couldn’t be perfect, I still didn’t like some of the seams. The bulge of the overlap, if uniform, I was okay with… but other laps attaining and getting it to stick to corners, wasn’t possible. Whether plywood or PMF, you still need to keep paint pristine and if you can keep it under cover when not in use, it will do far better. I am going to build a non-cabover shell and am considering exterior wall methods. One is burnt cedar lap siding the othe Rhinoliner either would sport aluminum trim. Probably will go TPO on the roof. To use the Canvas and Glue on the foam for a outdoor project would it help to use a water sealer after it has dried and then paint over it. I like the idea of making a deer blind but want it to last.
@ToddsProjectsandOutdoorJournal
@ToddsProjectsandOutdoorJournal 3 года назад
No, I think it will work just fine if you don't dilute it way down and you hit it with 3 coats. The guy that built his deer blind did dilute the Titebond II with water and paint. I believe that had he stuck with a 50% Titebond II and 50% paint (no water) mix and applied 3 coats (rather than 2) it would last just fine. The other thing is that he just bought some cheap oops paint from Home Depot. I would recommend using a quality porch paint. He loves his deer blind, he's just kicking himself for cutting corners and trying to get away too cheap. I warned him! The good thing is he just has to go out in the off season and hit all of the seams with titebond II and a paint brush and then repaint the whole thing with one coat as I described above.

Ok todays 3-28-2024 How is your camper doing after 3 or so years ? What type of plywood did you use? You said 3/16 " plywood. But did you use OSB plywood? Did you use exterior 3/16 plywood? Did you use 3/16 pressure treated plywood? I have an old 70's camper trailer it's 7' X 16' X 6.5 tall. I want to use plywood and sandwich foam in the middle. But I'm also wanting to cover the plywood with Tite Bond 2 with paint to paint and cover the plywood. Will this work ? Do I need to cover the plywood with canvas and tite bond 2 and paint? Please advise Thank you Sincerely Russell Wilkins
@ToddsProjectsandOutdoorJournal
@ToddsProjectsandOutdoorJournal 2 месяца назад
The camper is still in excellent condition and I have had zero problems with it. No OSB. I used a lauan backed beadboard paneling on the inside and an exterior plywood on exterior. You can cover the exterior plywood but you don't have to. I used a good coat of primer and many coats of exterior porch paint on the plywood exterior. You can use 3/16 - 1/4" plywood. Do some research on building a plywood canoe/boat. That will give you some good info for ideas on your camper exterior. I was just thinking if one used 2x2 uprights in the corners to support a small load you wouldn't need any type of plywood on the outside of cabinets. A kitchen counter usually doesn't have much weight on it, water bottles under the counter etc. I'm not doing a Foamy but for a cargo trailer build with an axle that only has a 3500 lb. weight limit I just wanted to reduce the weight being towed and not need weight distribution setup etc. PS: nice build you did, watched it several times. Found this video researching how I can make my eMoped camping trailer. I built an LongEZ aircraft in 2000 using foam and fiberglass. The structural glue used on corners, was epoxy and cotton flux. Cotton is as strong as fiberglass The following concerns me; 1- Wood glue is water resistant, not the same as water proof. 2- The weight of all the glue and paint coats, may not make much difference in a car camper, but it does on an electric bike. Why not just use cheap epoxy (not polyester epoxy) instead of glue and gallons of paint? They are about $250/ Gal but you save time and weight. Did you do any load testing on small foam scraps to see which one is stronger?
@ToddsProjectsandOutdoorJournal
Since I decided to skin the exterior of my trailer with plywood which essentially made it a structural insulated panel I had no concerns about the structural integrity of the walls. There are lots of different materials you can use with PMF. Thanks for the input, great suggestions.

In my opinion putting filler on the foam is going to cause problems. I think some microboloons would work but that's pretty expensive for the resin. Seems to me that you could just use the glue and canvas. As you said the dent will show in the finish. That's where so would be using the filler. Then paint over that.

Would you not board the foam over with a thin 5mm plywood and then glue and canvas over that board? Also I wouldn’t use the canvas and glue as the finish, I’d use a good few coats of Primer/Filler on top, sanding in between then paint on top of that like you would a car body? Doing proper bodywork is the only way you’ll get a decent long lasting finish. It needs to be waterproof, it needs to be sealed and it needs to look decent, treat it like a boat hull or something similar. It will take time but it will last way longer. The other options are to go down the plywood with thin sheet metal glued and to me this is the easy most cost effective version of finishing them, that’s why most companies do it this way, seal it well, use good corner edging, nice decals and it looks super professional. Im about to start a teardrop project and I’m looking into so many options for mine, I’m wanting a more utilitarian concept but I want it to last. Luckily I’ve got fibreglass laminating experience so I may do the seams this way and use aluminium sheeting over the top as a nice finish. Ultimately, as long as it’s waterproof and fully sealed the shell will be fine. Raptor paint seems like a good option too if that’s a look you’re into?

Prime with a kilz or similar then use fuller of choice and then primer again and then oil based quality exterior paint. Could be auto or boat or house paint I think.
