Why do people become homeless? How many people does it affect? How does government legislation affect the provision for the homeless? There are over an estimated 300,000 homeless people in the UK and ‘Rough Sleepers’ the people we see on the streets only represent a very small percentage of the total number of people caught in this epidemic.
This film explores the complex reasons that lead to people finding themselves on the street and the difficulties in supporting them in light of the consequences of austerity policy.
With contributions from Dr Victoria Cooper, Dr Daniel McCulloch, Dr David Scott and Dr Mathijs Lucassen The Homeless Problem gather a wide range of expertise and first-hand testimonials from people that have experienced homelessness in a discussion that examines topics as wide-ranging as mental health to the relationship between homelessness and the criminal justice system.

I live in a block of flats in the UK. There's homeless people who sleep outside at the rear of the flats every night. They make alot of noise,and they take drugs and fight. They poo and wee just outside my bedroom window. I'm not criticising them. I'm just telling you what they do. If I give them money,they spend it on drugs. If I take my rubbish bags out to bin,they shout swear and ask me to give them more money. When I tell people all this,they think I'm a bad person because I criticising them. But I'm not criticising them. All this is what they do outside my flat. And I'm supposed to feel sorry for them? I'm supposed to feel empathy? You'll be surprised how quickly people's opinions change when it's their door step the homeless are sleeping on,weeing on,pooing on! If you feel sorry for them,go out and find one and let him sleep on your doorstep for a few nights!!!

Once I had the misfortune of Being homeless I had two choices either a city park bench or a tent in the woods I chose the woods I had to be clever to survive a good example was when winter was right around the corner I needed to find a way to keep my tent warm I scavenged the woods around me looking for something I could use to heat my tent I got lucky I found a few iron pipes in some junk thrown over a hill and the iron pipes where exactly what I needed to heat my tent I already had a shallow fire pit about 6 ft from my tent so I dug a few trenches from the bottom of the fire pit to underneath where my tent was going to be I laid the iron pipe in the trenches and packed clay over the pipes outside inside I covered the pipes with river pebbles I set the tent back up and I made a rope frame over the tent to support sleeping bags and tarps when I started a fire in the fire pit the iron pipes got hot and I had radiant heat coming through the tent floor the bigger the fire the more heat I got and even when the fire went out the pipes would stay hot for a while longer I never had a cold day or night after that

Ingenious 👏👏👏 I've been homeless and lived rough. You do what you have to do for the basics which are food, clothing and shelter. It's amazing how resourceful you can be when it's a matter of survival. You don't have to go full on feral or resort to major criminal activity although l did resort to some acts of petty thievery when times got really really desperate. Thankfully that wasn't very often and didn't directly result in physical harm to other individuals. Being homeless doesn't mean you lose all ability to be resourceful.

@KrunoslavStifter
@KrunoslavStifter 2 года назад
@@MasterJammer Well its easy. Just follow the money? Who makes a profit from homelessness. What kind of social programs, NGO's, politicians etc. Drug dealers. And see what kind of ideologies are though in universities. Yeah, truest me goverment is not your friend, it created the problem so people are dependent on it. If goverment were to actually do its job or providing conditions for people to succeed, it would be no homelessness and also no need for big goverment. So why would they want that. This way they make a profit from homelessness and make themselves needed. The more people depend on welfare and social programs the more politicians have power and make money. And they make backroom deal with companies that build housing, provide various social services etc. Its a big business. You remove goverment or have one that is small and only works on creating conditions for people to succeed, and you would have virtually no homelessness. As long as people think goverment is the answer to the problem, the goverment has all the incentive in the world to keep the problem alive, because it keeps them in power.

A problem with homelessness, - but hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees given homes and places to stay immediately on arrival, including, but not exclusive to, four star hotels and free six bedroomed houses to Indians. It doesn't wash with me I'm afraid, there are hundreds of office blocks purchased by Councils for investment purposes, paid for by taxpayers money, left empty, only to loose value - when they could have been converted into self catering units for the homeless. Not to mention the millions of pounds being funelled into offshore accounts. We can spend money on Wars, we can spend money on immigrants, but we cannot provide good quality low cost accomodation for our own under privilidged. - Baffling and mind-boggling in the same breath. - Change is coming.

The problem is being homeless, and JOBLESS. They go hand in hand. I have been jobless a couple of times in my life, but I have my own home. That was my base camp from which I set out looking for permanent or temporary sustenance. The US education system ought to teach the kids how to own a home and keep it. The American way is never to hope for things to be easy, but to make things happen. The homeless shouldn't expect things to be made easier for them. Go get 'em, and no buts. Huh? The " left" as you say is typically in favor of more robust social safety net programs, rent controls, addiction programs, expanded mental health services etc; while the " right" supports criminalizing homelessness. What does " globalism" ( whatever you mean by this term that you borrow from right-wing talking points) have to do with this issue? Make sense please. Homelessness seems be be a growing problem in all western societies, regardless of whether the government is led by liberal or conservative policies. Currently, the UK has a conservative prime minister by the way, though that is likely to change in the near future.

Everyone applauds the UK/ EUROPEAN system and trashes the USA system. The main difference in the USA is that we have the worst, the average and the best in the world. You just have to fight for it or choose how bad you want it. People have moved from NY to FL and lived in trailer homes for $200.00 a month in rent. Even at $7.00 an hour most people in the USA could afford that … even if it meant going out and collecting tin cans at $0.05 per can. (Also, Catholic charities can give you one time help of $1,000.00-$2,500 to buy that trailer. Or the thousands of other not for profits). And you can choose to climb up from that. Or take a $60,000.00 job - no education, no training and do one of those oil jobs. If you are willing to part from the USA or your family and temporarily leave the country - and the $60,000.00 is tax free!! It depends on how bad you want something in the USA. If you are willing to move to another state, stop abusing alcohol, stop abusing drugs, ask your 15 year old kids to help out by getting a part time job. Moving to a college that has free day care at the college. The private system in the USA seems much better than UK or Europe. But you must make sacrifices and learn about all of these programs on your own. But thanks to the internet, this is a bit easier. It is also easier to find housing in the USA and people willing to take in foreigners - something private English and Europeans won’t do as readily as in the USA. Most citizens don’t care if you are a citizen; as long as your money is green in the USA. In Europe and in England it is the EXACT OPPOSITE. Even if you come from a wealthy nation and are White, it is hard to get a citizen to lease you a flat. So the USA has the worst in the developed world, but we also have average and the best in the world. We have quadruple the number of non profits in Europe and the UK, the hardest part is finding out about them and the willingness to do what is necessary. When I saw that some places in the UK only give out emergency food 3 times in a year to people … I was like WTF!! In the USA most people get a MINIMUM of 12 times a year!!! And even if you cannot prove you are in need, most churches give you food two months before they insist you bring proof. I saw these videos of people jumping through hoops to get a voucher BEFORE even being allowed to go to the church in the first place. In the USA, you just show up at the church/ food pantry.

That’s a gray point. I am in the US and I think I have only seen one or two black unhoused as they are now calling it. Almost all Caucasian.

Asians tend to have stronger family structures and look after one another. I can't speak for the black folk. White folk tend to be quite individualistic which has it's advantages and disadvantages.
